Established on September 1st, 1995, the Foundation for Hellenic Studies operates under the auspices of the American Hellenic Institute in Washington, DC.

The Foundation's main objective is to provide support to qualified individuals, institutions, programs and projects advancing the study of Greece and Cyprus in the United States.

I. Awards to Individuals

TRAVEL GRANTS

For post-doctoral scholars and other established scholars traveling from Greece or Cyprus to the United state to present papers on topics of significance to Greece or Cyprus at an international conference, or to lecture in the United States. Maximum award is 50% of economy class airfare to the United States.

Deadlines: January 1st, March 1st & September 1st.
Applications must include: a complete curriculum vitae in English; a copy of an official letter of invitation; a proposed itinerary; a copy of the official program; a copy of the ticket stub (economy class).
 

DISSERTATION RESEARCH AND WRITING GRANTS

To encourage Ph.D. students to pursue dissertations on a topic of importance to Greece or Cyprus. A one-time grant with a maximum award of $5,000.

Deadlines: January 1st & September 1st.
Applications must include: a complete curriculum vitae; a letter of recommendation from the applicant's dissertation chair; a two-page detailed description of the approved dissertation project.
 

PUBLICATION GRANTS

To provide subventions for manuscripts accepted for publication by a reputable scholarly press on a topc of important to the study of Greece or Cyprus. Maximum award amount of $2,500 per one-time award. Additional requests may be considered in special cases.

Deadlines: December 1st,  March 1st, & September 1st.
Applications must include: the authors' curriculum vitae; a copy of the scholarly press contract; an outline of the manuscript and a three-page detailed summary of the manuscript.  


II. Association and Institutional Grants

WORKSHOP AND CONFERENCE GRANTS

To provide matching grant support to university and/or association sponsored conferences focusing on a topic of importance to the study of Greece or Cyprus. Maximum award of $5,000 per institution or association in a two-year period.

Deadlines: December 1st,  March 1st, & September 1st.
Applications must include: a full program description including panel topics, papers, and names and affiliations of participants; evidence of institutional or association financial support.
 

SUPPORT OF GREEK STUDIES PROGRAMS

Matching seed money to support programs of Modern Greek Studies at an accredited college or university. Award amount of $5,000-10,000. A one-time award per institution.

Deadlines: December 1st & March 1st.
Applications must include: the curriculum vitae of the project director and/or the faculty involved in the program; a copy of the program budget; an official statement of the university's financial commitment to the program and the actual amount of support.
 

LIBRARY GRANTS

For the acquisition of books, journals, computer programs, and other material relating to the study of Greece or Cyprus. Maximum annual award of $2,000. Reapplications will be accepted depending on the nature of the institutional collection.

Deadlines: December 1st,  March 1st, & June1st.
Applications must include: the curriculum vitae of the librarian or project director; a specific budget indicating the materials to be acquired; a follow-up letter confirming the acquisition of the said materials.
 

PUBLICATION GRANTS

To support the publication of manuscripts accepted by scholarly presses on a topic of importance to Greece or Cyprus. Also support of major journals published in the United States with a focus on Greece or Cyprus. Award amounts of $2,500-5,000.

Deadlines: December 1st,  March 1st, & September1st.
Applications must include: the author(s) curriculum vitae; a copy of the scholarly press contract for the book and/or journal; an outline of the manuscript, and a three-page detailed summary of the manuscript. In the case of journals, please include a statement of the journal's editorial policy, the composition of the editorial board, and the objectives of the journal.
 

TEACHING AIDS GRANTS

To produce or acquire teaching aids on the study of Greece or Cyprus in order to improve the institutional curriculum. Applications from public schols, universities and colleges will be considered. Materials involved include, but are not limited to, computer programs, slides, maps, books, periodicals, etc. Maximum awards of $1,000 per institution. Repeat requests will be considered.

Deadlines: December 1st,  March 1st, & June1st.
Applications must include: a curriculum vitae of the program director(s); an institutional description; a detailed three-page summary explaining how the acquisition of the materials will enhance the institutional curriculum, and how the program fits the institutional objectives.
 

OTHER SMALL GRANTS

For the production or dissemination of informational material on topics of importance to the study of Greece or Cyprus, or other projects contributing to a better understanding of Greece or Cyprus. Awards made to institutions or individuals. Maximum awards of $2,500. Additional amounts may be considered depending on the proposed project.

Deadlines: December 1st & March 1st.
Applications must include: a curriculum vitae of the program director(s); a three-page summary of the project, its anticipated outcomes, and how will the project benefit the study of Greece or Cyprus.
