NEW DEMOCRACY RIVALS FOR LEADERSHIP UNITE FRONTS AGAINST EVERT

Athens, September 29 (M.P.A.)

Ever since it suffered a three-point loss in last Sunday's elections, Greece's main opposition party New Democracy found itself the midst of a leadership battle after its latest leader, Miltiades Evert conceded defeat and resigned, only to re-submit his candidacy for leadeship late last night.

Prompted by Mr. Evert's reappearance, the two main contenders for the party's top seat, Dora Bacoyianni, the daughter of N.D.'s honorary President Konstantinos Mitsotakis, and George Souflias, a leading member of N.D., have united their fronts. Ms. Bacoyianni withdrew her candidacy and vowed support to Mr. Souflias who will be Mr. Evert's main rival for the party's leadership.
