The Macedonian Press Agency is holding this conference, - its third international one within the period of one year - wanting to partake in the series of events held in honor of Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital of Europe 1997, while also wishing to make its mark and embolden the mass media to provide more time and coverage of culture - and arts - related issues.

Thessaloniki, a city with a 2,300-year history, wove religions and traditions into culture for centuries and became a distinguished cornerstone of the Hellenistic world, as one of the Roman Empires headquarters and the Byzantiums sister capital city. This is the town which gives life to the message that the mass media should dedicate more of their attention to the cultural values and heritage of the European peoples, thereby contributing not only to the safeguarding and continuance thereof, but also providing the impetus to the younger generations that they form and shape ideals and moral values, so needed in our time.
