The Port of Thessaloniki
The port of Thessaloniki, the natural gate of the Balkans to the sea, is rapidly being developed to accommodate international cruise liners and local ferries as an outlet to the islands of the Aegean. The new passenger station "Macedonia" was recently established to serve this new development.

Commercial activity over the years has increased
tremendously at Thessaloniki's harbour due to the works that have been completed making it a major embarkation point for cruises as well as a major commercial port. The old traditional buildings of the port and the recent restoration done in the area, added colour and atmosphere to this part of the city. The expansion of passenger shipping to the northern Aegean Sea is also bringing more tourists in Macedonia.

The city can now cater to two categories of tourists -passengers on cruise ships and on yachts, who spend more freely than the package holidays. Thessaloniki's port has encouraged cruise ships, to make more regular calls, offering excursions around the city and to Vergina.
