One of the top priorities of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine is to make Piraeus a modern shipping trade centre of Eastern Mediterranean. We are well aware of the improvement required to the city and port infrastructure and to this end we have already started appropriate works in co-operation with the competent authorities (Municipality, Port Authorities, Piraeus Port Organisation). We are proceeding to the implementation of an ambitious programme aiming to re shape Piraeus into an ultra-modern shipping trade centre.

The five years development plan for the Piraeus Port includes:

• passenger movement to be carried out separately from cargo movement activities.
• New port works to be carried out and port infrastructure improvements to be made in what regards facilities and equipment supply.
• existing facilities to be further developed and improvements to be made to the road network connecting the port with the island
• Reorganisation of the telecommunication system in general, already in progress and of paramount importance for Piraeus further development.
