Established as a department of the Municipal Library in 1966, it acquired its own premises in 1986 in a listed building owned by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the renowned Villa Mordoh.

The mansion, erected in 1905 in the Eclectic style, was designed by architect X. Paeonidis. The collections of the Gallery number more than 800 pieces and are grouped into five sections:

1. Collection of Artists from Thessaloniki (divided into three generations: 1900-1922, 1923-1940, 1941-1967).

2. Modern Greek Etching and Engraving, covering a period of 60 years.

3. Byzantine Icons, covering a period of six centuries.

4. Modern Greek Art.

5. Sculpture.

The Gallery organizes exhibitions on a regular basis, mainly of works by Greek artists, fosters publishing activities, has a specialist library-cum-reading-room and offers specially arranged guided tours for the public. At the same time, it participates in conferences, congresses and Fine Arts events in Thessaloniki and elsewhere.
