Van Coufoudakis: Prospects for a Greek-Turkish Detente in the Post-Cold War Era: A Greek Perspective
ABSTRACT

Seventy-four years after the Lausanne Treaty and seventy-five years after the destruction of Smyrna and the expulsion of the Greek population of Asia Minor, the challenge of Greco-Turkish relations remains. Greco-Turkish relations have gone through cycles of detente and confrontation. This is likely to continue in view of the divergent policies and policy objectives of the two countries. The paper examines the policy outlook of Greece, a status quo power, and how has Greece responded to the challenge of Turkey's revisionism. Detente can be restored in Greco-Turkish relations if Turkey renounces the threat of force and provides an unqualified acknowledgment of the status quo established by the Treaties of Lausanne (1923), Montreux (1936) and Paris (1947).
