ATSIKI

Photo The large mountainous village of Atsiki lies 22 km north-west of Mirina, next to the airport. It has a factory of fizzy drinks, which also produces wheat, grapes, and stock-breeding products. For many years now there has been a "Womens' Confectionary Co-operative". Those who want to combine the wild beauty of the landscape with swimming, should go 22 km further to the quiet beach of Agios Ermolaos with its crystalline waters.




KASPAKAS

Photo The traditional village of Kaspakas is nestled at the foot of mount Agios Athanasios, 5 km from Mirina. It is not visible from the sea as it was built in order to keep pirates away. Its one thousand inhabitants stroll its cobbled narrow alleyways every day and the sweet smell of dried figs in the air attracts its visitors.




KONDIAS

Photo Kondias is one of the biggest and prettiest villages of Limnos. It is 11 km south of Mirina and has about 550 inhabitants. The famous ouzo "Kondias" is produced here. In summer, it attracts many visitors, mainly Greeks who have emmigrated abroad. Its treeclad streets, stone houses, and the picturesque Church of Agios Dimitrios with the stone bell-tower, give Kondias a local colour which attracts a great number of tourists.




KONDOPOULI

Photo The large mainland village of Kondopouli is nestled among wheat fields where cattle are raised. It has 800 inhabitants and is 29 km north-east of Mirina, near the two small picturesque lakes, Aliki and Hortarolimni. Visitors should go swimming at Keros beach, 2 km from the village in an enchanting area where pine trees reach the sea.




KORNOS

Photo Kornos is one of the prettiest villages of Limnos. It is 6 km northeast of Mirina and has about 330 inhabitants. It is preferred by those who want to buy the well-known sweets of the island, mastic and halva. Tourists also visit the famous neoclassical mansions as well as the Churches of Agios Andreas and the Assumption of the Virgin.




MIRINA

Photo The town of Mirina stretches around two bays, Limani and Romaikos Gialos. It is the capital and port of Limnos and has 5,000 inhabitants. It took its name from Mirina, queen of the Amazons. It is built on the site of the ancient town and has been settled since prehistoric times. Its cobbled streets and old but well-preserved stone houses give class to the town. In a big precinct full of cypress trees, one comes upon the Patriarchate. Along the busy waterfront, there are public service offices, and in the middle of the town, there is a rock with a Byzantine castle on top. The V.I.P'S prefer to stay at the "Akti Mirina" hotel because of its nightlife. From Mirina, one can visit all the villages of the island, both by seaside and the mainland.




MOUDROS

Photo Moudros, the old capital of Limnos, has about 1,000 inhabitants. The bay of this commercial harbour, the island's second most important town, is one of the most secure ports in the Mediterranean. It played a significant part in the recent history of Greece, as it was the base of operations for the Greek fleet in the Balkan wars and of the allied forces in World War I. This large village is 27 km from Mirina.




REPANIDI

Photo The inland traditional village of Repanidi with its 400 inhabitants is 25 km from Mirina on the north-east side. Its barns are engraved on the rock at the village's entrance. 2.5 km from the village is ideal for swimming at the beach in Kotsinas, where one also can taste delicious seafood and visit the remains of the Venetian fortress. At Agiohoma location in Repanidi, "Limnia Gi", one of the most important medicines of Hippocrates, was mined.
