Chalkidiki

The Chalkidiki peninsula is a large blob to the south-east of Thessaloniki, from which three long 'fingers' (Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos) extend into the Aegean, with beautiful sandy beaches and pine trees that come down to 'meet' the deep blue water of the sea. Two large lakes, Koronia and Volvi separate the peninsula from the rest of Macedonia. The capital of Chalkidiki is Poligiros, a picturesque town. The long, sweeping beaches of Kassandra, the western peninsula, have been developed into large-scale holiday centres by the Greek National Tourism Organization. The resorts of Sani, Kalithea, Kriopigi, Chanioti and Paliouri are ideal for family vacations. The peninsula of Sithonia is undoubtedly the prettiest and most cheerful of the three fingers. You will find fine beaches from Metamorfosis down to Toroni, and first class camping facilities at Paradissos and Neos Marmaras. Near the latter, Sithonia boasts, one of the country's best resort complexes, Porto Carras. Chalkidiki lies to the south, Mt. Athos, the monastic state, the holly mountain, a separate and special feature. Dozens of fabulousByzantine monasteries, lurk in the fertile valleys and perch sheer rocky coasts hiding unique treasures.
