Amorgos THE PEOPLE & THE PLACE
BACK ISLAND 's MAP AREIA E-MAIL

PhotoAmorgos is the eastern most island of the Cyclades. Its peculiar oblong shape has an area of 121 sq km and is 138 nautical miles from Piraeus, that is, a trip of 10-12 hours by boat. Hora of Amorgos is the most beautiful and most characteristic of the Cycladic towns. Katapola, one of its two harbours, is considered to be the prettiest natural harbour in the Aegean. The entire island is virtually the peak of a mountain range. It has steep shores on the east and small peninsulas on the west. The climate of Amorgos is dry, with cool summers. It favours the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards, but this is not as widespread anymore. The 2,000 inhabitants of the island are mainly fishermen, farmers, and stock-breeders. Some of them are engaged in the tourist trade, which has grown considerably in recent years. The people of Amorgos are people of merit. They love visitors and treat them with special care. They love to tell stories of their island as they treat everybody to "rakomelo" at the quiet coffee shops of Amorgos.
