AMORGOS (HORA)

Amorgos, the island's capital, is built on a slope, on top of which stands the famous Venetian Castle. The town's picturesque white houses with slate yards, built around the two squares, make the town one of unique Cycladean colour. The most beautiful sights are the church of Metropolis, Eleoussa, Agios Thaleleos, Stavros and Agioi Pandes, as well as the local museum housed in the Tower of Gavras. From Hora, one should visit the famous Byzantine monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, the church of Agios Georgios and the Hellenistic tower on the position of Terlaki.

ARKESSINI

The beautiful settlement of Arkessini is situated 9 km south of Hora. It is a picturesque village with white houses and slate alleys, built in a green area, full of orchards and olive groves. Outside Arkessini, at the location of Kastri, excavations have brought to light ruins of Ancient Arkessini, tombs, parts of walls and houses, while next to the church of Agia Triada, ruins of a Hellenistic tower were found.

EGIALI

Egiali, Amorgos's second port, is built 15 km north of Hora and has a population of 200 inhabitants. The village consists of three smaller picturesque settlements with whitewashed Cycladean houses: Lagada, Tholaria and Potamos. In the village, one can admire the beautiful churches of Agia Triada, Panagia Epanohoriani, Agioi Anarigi and Analipsi, while excavations outside the village have brought to light ruins of an ancient settlement and acropolis.

KATAPOLA

The seaside settlement of Katapola is situated 5 km from Hora. In the windless port, all kinds of boats seek refuge, while along the seaside drive, there are picturesque tavernas and coffee shops attracting many tourists. The village is divided into three smaller settlements: Katapola, Rahidi and Xilokeratidi. The houses preserve many characteristics of the traditional Cycladean architecture. The scenery is dominated by the church of Panagia Katapoliani. From Katapola, one should visit the area where excavations brought to light the ruins of Ancient Minoa.
