BACK ISLAND 's MAP AREIA E-MAIL

PhotoAndros is the second largest Cycladic island after Naxos. It is the most northern island of the group and is 380 sq km in area. It is 177 sq km in coastline and 36 nautical miles from Rafina with which it is connected by boat. It is a mountainous island with many ravines, running water, medicinal springs and verdant valleys. Its highest mountain is mount Petalo (1,003 metres). The north-eastern shores of Andros are very windy and its climate is mild, dry and very healthy. Its many running waters and wonderful climate make Andros one of the most fertile Cycladic islands. It is rich in fruit trees and olive groves. The famous mineral water of Sarisa is produced here. The island has about 10,500 inhabitants. Only a few of them are farmers. Andriots turned to the sea from their earliest years. Many of our ship owners come from the "Archondissa of the Cyclades". Tourism plays an important part in the life of the locals. In recent years, big touristic units have been built on the island and have provide local families for decades. Everyday contact with tourists, along with an air of the well travelled, gives a special character to Andriots. They are independent people who love quality in life and welcome visitors to their island, while keeping their local colour and traditions alive.
