ANDROS (HORA)

Photo The capital of Andros, Hora, is built amphitheatrically on a low hill. The town's buildings are very imposing, while the central square of Theofilos Kairis is large and wide as it is the "promenade" of the island. One of the most significant sights of Hora is the Castle, built by Marinos Dandolos. Other beautiful sights include the church of Panagia Palatiani, the Embirikio Home for the Aged and the Naval High School. Not far from Hora, one can visit Sineti. The village's stone houses, with the pigeonries and the seven watermills with the butterflies, compose a majestic scenery.

BATSI

Photo Batsi is a seaside resort of great touristic interest, as it is the centre of the nightlife of Andros. It is situated 27 km west of Hora and its beach is one of the best on the island. The most significant sights of Batsi are the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (14th century) and the mountainous settlement of Arnas, built in a green area.

GAVRIO

Photo The basic port of Andros, Gavrio, is situated 31 km north-west of Hora. Excavations in the area have brought to light specks of buildings which indicate the island's significance in the ancient years. On the site of Kato Felos, north of Gavrio, there were marble mines in the antiquity. The settlement of Gavrio attracts many tourists, thus it is touristically developed like few areas in Andros.

MESSARIA

Photo Messaria is one of the most beautiful inland villages of Andros. This green village is situated 5 km south-west of Hora. In Byzantine years, Messaria was one of the vital centres of the island, as its location protected it from pirate raids.
