Kea TRADITION
BACK ISLAND 's MAP AREIA E-MAIL

PhotoKea is a special kind of traditional settlement. In Ioulida, the island's capital, the houses were originally built in the Cycladic style. In recent years though, the added rooftiles somewhat altered the original local colour, without taking away anything of its quaintness. Its houses go down the slopes, one next to the other, and the narrow alleyways between them are paved. The inhabitants of Kea keep their manners and customs alive. Their festivals have a strong festive character, even the traditionally religious ones. The Keans will pray and then celebrate until dawn, dancing local dances and singing traditional songs. The borough, together with individuals, have created cultural societies, which organise musical and theatrical performances as well as athletic games all year round in which locals and tourists alike can take part.
