Mikonos

BACK ISLAND 's MAP INFOXENIOS E-MAIL

The island of Mikonos needs no special introduction. Greek mythology claims that Mikonos was formed by the fossilized bodies of the giants that Hercules killed, and was named after the mythical hero called, Mikono. Cosmopolitan and charming, picturesque and sophisticated, it has been the playground of the famous and anonymous alike for many years. Mikonos is known the world over, for its windmills, its beautiful, rocky hills that gently roll down to sandy beaches, the wild night-life, and of course its trademark, Peter the Pelican. The capital, Hora, is adorned by beautiful, white-washed, boxed-shaped houses, built around stone-paved, intertwining, narrow streets, intermixed with small red-roofed chapels, lively bars, first-class restaurants and simple tavernas. The harbour is equally hospitable to luxury yachts and small fishing boats, adding to the enchanting picture of this trend-setting island. Ano Mera, the second most important village in the island, is home to the interesting Monastery Our Lady of Tourliani, with a collection of valuable ecclesiastic vessels, vestments and embroideries. Beach lovers will enjoy the crystal clear waters of Agios Stefanos, Psarou, Kalafatis, Platis Gialos, Ornos, Elias and Panormos.
