Due to the recent touristic development of the island, the town of Kos abounds in coffeeshops serving coffee and fresh juice, such as "Kathgorias Cafe-Bar", while serving alcohol in the evening. The local pastry shops serve tasty sweets baked in the oven, the best known being "backlavas", while there are also syrup sweets, the most tasty being the sweet made of syrup and small tomatoes. The town has many Italian restaurants, restaurants and tavernas serving fresh fish and all kinds of seafood. The best known restaurant here, is the "Fish House". Other restaurants serving top quality food, in town, are the "Mira Mare", "Olympiada", "Anatolia Hamam" and others. In the nearby village of Platanos, there are many picturesque tavernas serving local cuisine. Here, one can ask for the red cheese baked in red wine. A stroll thought Kefalos can end with dinner at "Katerina's Taverna", while, in the mountainous villages of Asfendiou, one can have gruel made of wheat, cooked with pork and "dolmades", accompanied by white demi-sec wine.
