[01] The Mayor of Cluj asks for state of emergency
The right wing mayor of the Romanian city of Cluj is reported to have asked
the government to impose the state of emergency in three central counties
because of what he called the extremely dangerous anti-Romanian activities
of ethnic Hungarians there. In an open letter to president Emil
Constantinescu, the mayor Gheorghe Funar suggested that some emergency
session of the Supreme Defence Council of Romania be conviened, and the
state of emergency introduced. RADOR, August 18
[02] New tax on gas fuel
In order to reduce the smuggling of gas fuel, the Romanian customs
authorities will collect a tax on gas fuel. The goverment's decission,
which has been approved a week ago, but is only now released, concerns all
the Romanian and the foreign citizens who cross the border more than twice
a term. The value of this tax will be equivalent to 2.5 times the price of
the gas which is in the gas tank, no matter how much fuel might be in it at
that moment. The diplomats and the citizens of Republic of Moldova will be
absolved of paying this tax. RADOR, August 18
[03] Romanian Transport Minister in support TAROM
The TAROM Company could get devided into four companies, three of
exploitation and one for mentainance. Transport Minister Traian Basescu
says this suggestion could save the company. He considers that the
solutions presented by SOF regarded only the clouser of the company. Mr
Basescu says that a company of national interest as TAROM is, must be
supported. For the time being the company's losses amount to 100 billion
lei, but it cannot pay even the rates to the credits obtained for buying
the airships AIRBUS and BOEING. RADOR, August 18
[04] Romanian Orthodox Church message
In the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest and also in the Orthodox churches
from Romanian Patriarchate, the appeal of the Synod of the Romanian
Orthodox Church for supporting the Romanian Orthodox communities all over
the world was read on Sunday. The appeal was signed by the Romanian
Patriarch Teoctist. RADOR, August 18
[05] Weather in Romania
Weather in Romania will be unstable in most of the country. Some rains are
forecast in south-eastern regions. Temperatures will range from 13
