[01] PDSR leader is visiting Baia Mare
During his tour in the Northern regions of the country, the president of
the PSD Ion Iliescu denounced the way the Ciorbea Government started the
clearing off procedure in case of the units in debt and having losses. The
present reforms of the Ciorbea Government "are nothing in comparison with
those of the Vacaroiu Government" - Ion Iliescu said. He added he will
continue to support the "step by step" economic reform process that could
be beared by the population. President Constantinescu has also been
targeted by Mr Iliescu. He criticised Mr Constantinescu for his proposals
for altering the Law on the status of houses confiscated during the
communist regime and for ideatic support of the "fundamentalist senators
and deputies whose only purpose is to satisfy their own interest". RADOR,

[02] Former Romanian sovereign King Michael I in the Botosani County
King Michael I and his wife Ana of Bourbon-Parma arrived Monday afternoon
in the Botosani county. In the town of Podu Siret at the border with
Suceava county, they were received, as the Romanian tradition requires for,
with bread and salt by the local officials. Mihai I headed afterwards to
the Vorona monastery, set to be his residence for the time he will stay in
the Botosani county. RADOR, August 19
[03] "Vatra Romaneasca" and current situation in Transylvania
The "Vatra Romaneasca" organisation is not pleased with the Government's
actions on the situations generated by the appliance of the 22nd and 36th
Emergency Orders on altering the Public Local Administration Law and the
Education Law - the president of the Bucharest branch of the organisation
Valentin Borda stated. In the same context, "Vatra Romaneasca" demanded for
the dismissal of the Ciorbea Government and asked president Constantinescu
to analyze the situation in the county in order to avoid "hungarianism to
rise again in Transylvania". The Bucharest branch of the organisation will
propose to its National Coordinating Council to examine the problem of the
founding of the national guard corps in Transylvania, aiming to protect the
Romanian citzens in the region - the president of the Bucharest branch of
the "Vatra Romaneasca" organisation said. RADOR, August 19
[04] Protests at the National Power Authority
Employees of the Govora branch of the National Power Authority started
Monday, 14:00 hours a protest rally. Representatives of the Bucharest,
Braila, Turnu-Severin, Rovinari and Oradea branches of the company also
took part in the rally, in order to show their support for the requirements
of the Govora employees. The protesters asked for the Govora branch not to
be driven out of the national power system and not to become a trading
unit. They also asked the Government for an official rule to legitimate the
possibility to negociate the price for power and heat supplies with no
intermediaries between NPA and the industrial consumers. RADOR, August 19
[05] Romanian-South-Korean meeting
The Romanian Chamber of Deputies' Comission for foreign affairs led by Mr.
Victor Bostinaru met on Monday the members of the National Assembly of the
Republic of Korea National Assembly Comissions for foreign policy, foreign
relations and unification visiting Romania. The two sides stressed the way
the relationship between the two countries could be improved and they
discussed the new institutional and juridical conditions for foreign
investments, considering the possibility of growth of the amount of South
Korean investments in Romania - a report of the Chamber of Deputies'
Comission for foreign affairs said. RADOR, August 19
[06] Romanian-Dutch Summer University opened in Sibiu
The second edition of the Romanian-Dutch Summer University opened on Monday
in Sibiu. The University will offer the possibility to train young
professional editors and operators from the six public local radio stations
in the country. The opening ceremony was attended by the head of the
Administrative Council and General Manager of the Romanian Broadcasting
Corporation Professor Dr. Tudor Catineanu, the Minister of Public Education
Virgil Petrescu, the delegate of the Dutch Organisation of National
Broadcasting Stations Bart Schmidt, the Deputy General Manager of the RBC
and head of the Local Broadcasting Stations Department Gheorghe Verman, the
head of the Sibiu "Lucian Blaga" University, city and county officials.

[07] Weather in Romania
Weather in Romania will be warmer and sunny in most of the country,
especially in south-western regions of Oltenia and Banat. Some rains are
forecast in the mountains. Temperatures will range from 14 centigrades in
