[01] The Government Has Approved the Establishment of the National Oil
Company
The main essential criteria for constituting the National Oil Company
according to Mr. Calin Popescu Tariceanu, are of economic, social, and
strategical kind. The company will include the present Autonomous Oil
Company, Petrom, followed by further fusions with the others economic
operators which are to be enclosed in the next society. Then the company
will also include two other refineries and the whole system of distribution
which now works under the aegis of PECO. RADOR, August 20
[02] Communique From the Press Office of the Democrat Party
The daily paper "National" has published several untrue information, which
constituted slanders and disparagements against the Democrat Party. As a
result, the paper and the author of such rough fabrications are to be sued
according to art. 206 from the criminal code. Until the elucidation of the
case and the enforcement of the law, the Democrat Party ceases any relation
with the newspaper - the press office of the Democrat Party. RADOR,

[03] PDSR Requires An Extraordinary Parliamentary Session
PDSR will send a letter to the permanent bureaus of the Parliament in which
it requires that an extraordinary parliamentary session should be convoked
between the 25th and 29th of the month. On Tuesday, at a press conference,
Mr. Adrian Nastase, the first vice-president of the party, said that if
this proposal was accepted the topics for the discussion would be those
concerning the changings that were to be done to the law of Education and
to the law of public local administration, the government's decision to
administrative clearance of seventeen enterprises, the PNTCD's intention to
change the law of the nationalized houses. RADOR, August 20
[04] "The New York Times" about the Reforms Introduction in Romania
"The New York Times", analysing the situation of Romania, indicates that
the present President Mr. Emil Constantinescu and Prime Minister Victor
Ciorbea want to modernize the country following the liberal western model.
The Romanian government has mentioned repeatedly the necessity of the
reforms and has received important loans from the World Bank and from the
IMF. But having been thoroughly involved in the campaign for the admission
of Romania in NATO in the first round, it has undertaken few concrete
measures before the decision of closing bankrupt enterprises of this month.

[05] The President of Senate, Witness in Miron Cozma's Trial
The president of Senate, Petre Roman took part as a witness in the trial
against the leader of the miners in Jiu Valley, Miron Cozma. According to
his statements, he allowed the miners to arrive in Bucharest in September
1991, having been announced they were ready to act violently against the
employees of SNCFR. As a result of the serious events happened that time,
Petre Roman declared that in agreement with the president Iliescu he
decided that the government should set its mandate, but the resignment of
the Roman government was announced the next day. RADOR, August 20
[06] CNS "Cartel ALFA" Requires to Be Stopped the Rise in the Price of the
Basic Food Supplies
A communique of CNS "Cartel ALFA", the Government of Romania that the
population is facing a new round of rise in the price at the main food

[07] Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea Met Prince Abdullah Bin al-Hussein of
Jordania
Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea Met Prince Abdullah Bin al-Hussein of
Jordania at the Victoria Palace on Monday. The Jordanian guest expressed
the possibility of certain collaboration and he affirmed that his visit in
our country was a success. He also invited the Romanian premmier to visit

[08] The Black Sea Coast Is Facing Heavy Pollution
Dr. Lawrence Mead, the coordinator of the ecological programme for the
Black Sea said that the shores of the Black Sea are seriously affected by
pollution. He also said that the main polluting agent for the Black Sea is
the Danube. RADOR, August 20
[09] "Eagle '97" Has Been Completed
The naval exercise "Rescue Eagle '97", which took place as a part of the
Peace Partnership and involved the participation of both Romanian and
American marine troops, ended Tuesday at Constanta.The survey, the
conclusions and the departure of the American troops are due to take place
