During an address he delivered at the Washington Institute for Near East policy, Peres said there are two tendencies in the Muslim world. "One is the fundamentalistic one headed by Iran, and the other one is the modern one, shall I say the democratic one, headed by Turkey. Clearly, we are on the side of the Turkish leadership in that struggle, as clearly we are against the Khomeini-like attempt. So the political basis is very clear. It is not because we are party to the problems and conflicts that Turkey may have, but Turkey is the leading Muslim country in the Muslim world today" Peres said in Washington on Tuesday.Turkey and Israel signed a military cooperation agreement on February 23, 1996, that roused the ire of Syria, Iran and Egypt. When he was asked his evaluation of such reaction to the Turkish-Israeli accord, Peres said it was a "technical" agreement, signed "to exchange information, to learn from each other" and not a "military alliance". "It is not aimed against anybody, against any other country" he said. /All papers/ [02] EGYPTIAN FM IN TURKEYIn addition to Turco-Egyptian relations and developments in the region, the much-criticized Turco-Israeli military training accord will be taken up once more between Ankara and Cairo during the visit of Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa which starts today. Moussa, who arrives in Turkey today to realize a twice-postponed meeting with his Turkish counterpart Emre Gonensay, is expected to take up the issue of the accord and what it entails for Israel with Defence Minister Oltan Sungurlu. During the visit, it is also expected that studies will come on the agenda to renew the economic cooperation agreement signed in 1976 between Turkey and Egypt.Moussa, who will meet with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel in Ankara today, will have a working luncheon with Foreign Minister Emre Gonensay and then will hold a private meeting. After meeting with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Moussa will leave Turkey tomorrow. /Milliyet/ [03] DUDAYEV WIDOW REQUESTS TURKISH AID FOR PEACE MISSIONAlya Dudayeva, widow of late Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dudayev, asked Turkish President Suleyman Demirel to help her end the war between Chechen rebels and Russian troops, the Anatolian news agency said on Monday. "I ask President Demirel to help me begin my attempts soon to stop the bloodshed" the agency quoted Dudayeva as saying. Dudayeva, speaking to a group of journalists in southern Chechnya on the weekend, said she was seeking to go to Moscow as part of a peace mission if Russia guaranteed safe passage. She wanted Demirel to help her meet Russian leaders. "I hope my message reaches Demirel soon and I can set out on my mission" she said.//[04] EXPO'96 INDUSTRY EXHIBITION IN BAKUAn International Consumer Goods and Light Industry Exhibition has opened in Baku. More than 100 firms from various countries are attending the exhibition organized by Forum Fair Company with the support of the Azerbaijan Chamber of Industry and Trade, Turkish Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (KOSGEB), the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) and the Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen Confederation. There are home appliances, foodstuffs, furniture, ready-wear, construction materials, automobiles and spare parts, medical supplies, electronic and communications products and light industry machines on show at the EXPO'96 fair which will last until 5 May. /Sabah/[05] GREEK PM VISITING THRACEGreek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will shortly be visiting Thrace for a three day official visit. While there he will examine the situation in places like Iskece, Kavala and Gumulcine.The Greek ministers for defence, housing, health and development along with other officials will accompany the Prime Minister. The visit has added to the diplomatic traffic in the region. Athens is now fully occupied with this visit of Simitis to Thrace and today's visit of Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos to the Greek community on Cyprus. /Milliyet/ [06] ANKARA CAUTIONS WASHINGTON ON COBRA DEALAlthough President Suleyman Demirel has specially requested President Clinton to expedite the sale of ten "Super Cobra" helicopters to Turkey, nothing has been done to see the sale through.Now Ankara has warned the US about cutting agreed military aid to Turkey. With every passing day, the likelihood of Turkey finally getting the helicopters weakens. Certain individuals in the administration have also delayed the sale by claiming that the helicopters will be used in operations against civilians in the problem-plagued southeastern regions of the country. Ankara has told Washington that if the sale is not speedily concluded, then Turkey will be forced to look elsewhere to meet its needs. That will be good news for perhaps the Russians or the French-German "Eurocopter" company because Turkish military representatives say that Turkey wants to buy 200 more helicopters. /Milliyet/ [07] STAMP EXPORTSTurkish Post Office officials have reported that stamps have become a valuable export commodity-with new editions going to collectors all over the world. Officials say that total yearly value in stamp sales to collectors comes to about fifty thousand dollars. /Cumhuriyet/ |
