TURKISH PRESS REVIEWFEBRUARY 18,1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] YASSER ARAFAT TO VISIT TURKEY ON THURSDAYPalestinian leader Yasser Arafat, accompanied by a high level delegation, will pay a one-day official visit to Ankara on Thursday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced. Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said that the PLO leader's visit follows an invitation by President Suleyman Demirel.Arafat is expected to meet with Demirel, Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller and Parliamentary Speaker Mustafa Kalemli during talks to be held in Ankara./Milliyet/ [02] TWO MESSAGES FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLDTurkey sends two messages out to the world. One comes from state minister Abdullah Gul who is currently in the States where he is telling officials that the US and Turkey share the same views on secularism.The other message comes from Foreign Minister Ciller who is in Brussels for a NATO meeting where she is telling the other delegates that Turkey has the right to use its veto to block NATO expansion projects. Both Ciller and Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel have confirmed that Turkey has not, and is unlikely to change its stance over this isssue. /All papers/ [03] TURKISH CYPRIOTS TO PARTICIPATE IN EU MEMBERSHIP TALKSBritain is currently working on a formula to include Turkish Cypriots in a European Union meeting at which the full membership of Cyprus in the EU will be discussed, the Anatolian news agency reported. Reports have appeared in the daily Cypriot newspaper 'Simerini' that an official from the British High Commission in Cyprus has indicated the British government wished to include Turkish Cypriots in the negotiations.[04] EUROPEAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION HEAD TRECHSEL IN ANKARAOn receiving the head of the European Union Human Rights Commission Stephen Trechsel in Ankara on Monday Justice Minister Sevket Kazan informed Trechsel of new improvements in the field of human rights, such as restricting the area of competence of the State Security Courts (DGM), as well as efforts to allow access between lawyers and prisoners during interrogations. Trechsel said for his part that he hoped the distance between Strasbourg, Ankara and Diyarbakir would become shorter. Trechsel is scheduled to leave Ankara on Tuesday./All papers/[05] TURKISH DELEGATION VISITS MALAYSIA, INDONESIAA 76-member Turkish delegation headed by State Minister Sabri Tekir will visit Malaysia and Indonesia on 19 February - 1 March. There are 58 businessmen in the delegation.The first stop of the delegation will be Indonesia where a Turco-Indonesia Joint Economic Commission meeting will be held. It is expected that an agreement on preventing double taxation and tax evasion will be signed between the two countries. The delegation will go to Malaysia on 20 February and hold contacts on improving trade relations between Turkey and Malaysia./Milliyet/ [06] ISO DELEGATION TO TRNCMembers of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) will pay a visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on 21 February.
