TURKISH PRESS REVIEWMAY 20, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] MAY 19 YOUTH AND SPORTS DAY CELEBRATEDThe May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day was celebrated with ceremonies throughout Turkey. The celebrations started at Ataturk's Mausoleum, Anitkabir when President Suleyman Demirel and his delegation arrived to lay a wreath. Demirel later wrote in the Anitkabir special guest book. Later Demirel went to the May 19 stadium to watch the celebrations held by the students.The day was also celebrated in northern Cyprus, where President Rauf Denktas asked the youth to protect the Republic. Turkish Ambassador to Washington Nuzhet Kandemir, spoke at a meeting organized by the American Ataturk Association (ASA) and a Turkish Student Union regarding the May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, where he praised founder Ataturk who won triumphs as a soldier and social reformist. /Sabah/ [02] ATATURK PEACE AWARD FOR TURKISH MILITARY IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINAThe 1997 Ataturk International Award has been bestowed upon a very worthy recipient, namely, the Turkish battalion in Zenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. In Ankara, on May 19, the award was presented by President Suleyman Demirel to a high-ranking military officer who received it on behalf of the Turkish battalion.[03] TURKISH TROOPS HITS PKK CAMPS IN NORTHERN IRAQHeavy fighting is continuing in northern Iraq as Turkish security forces backed by air support are attacking camps of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), killing dozens of PKK rebels.A Turkish Super Cobra helicopter crashed early Sunday south of the southern town of Cukurca in Hakkari, killing the two pilots on board. The toll of the cross-border operation of the Turkish Armed Forces into northern Iraq has reportedly has risen to around 1,200. The clandestine PKK separatists, on the other hand, blocked Sunday night for several hours the Mardin-Sirnak main road by burning two oil tanker trucks. Meanwhile, in the operations carried out by the Turkish security forces in southeastern Anatolia against the PKK, 17 separatists were killed and six were captured. /Sabah/Hurriyet_ [04] NATO GENERAL VISITS TURKEYNATO Military Committee Chairman Gen. Klaus Naumann will be visiting Turkey on May 22-23, the Anatolia news agency reported. According to the statement of the Secretary-General of the General Staff, Naumann will be visiting Turkey as the official guest of Chief of General Staff Gen. Ismail Hakki Karadayi. He will arrive in Turkey on the evening of Thursday May 22 and leave the following day.[05] TURKISH ARMY PREPARES FOR EFES-97 MANEUVERSThe Turkish Armed Forces' Efes-97 maneuvers will be held in the waters of the Aegean Sea and in the international air space in the same region from May 26 to June 13, the Anatolia news agency reported. According to the Office of the General Staff's written statement, several tactics involving the coordination of land forces, air forces and the navy will be carried out during the exercises. Several international observers will be present for the maneuvers as well.[06] OTTOMAN MOSQUE BOMBED IN GREECEThe Ottoman era Hasan Baba mosque in the Greek city of Larissa was bombed on Monday. According to the Greek press, the walls of the mosque were badly damaged by the dynamite blast. Following the explosion, the municipility called for extra police to prevent further attacks. Mayor Hristos Kafes, conmdemning the attack, mentioned that Larissa was preparing to become a sister city with Urgup in Turkey to further cultural cooperation and friendship./Sabah/[07] MONEY LAUNDERING CHECKUP FOR TURKEYThe Financial Crimes Investigation Council, set up within the Finance Ministry in accordance with the law concerning the fight against laundering money, is preparing a report for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering, established by the OECD, will meet in Rome from June 17 to 19 to evaluate the situations in various countries.The meeting, where Turkey will be represented by a delegation headed by Financial Crimes Investigation Council Chairman Osman Degerli, is of great significance to Turkey which had been asked by the OECD to take measures against money laundering. Prior to the meeting in Rome, Turkey will implement the regulation stipulated in the Money Laundering Law that proposes that finance institutions give regular information to the council on transactions exceeding a certain limit and report any suspicious transactions./Sabah/ [08] US CONCERNS REGARDING SOUTHERN WING OF NATOThe US administration, which adopts the expansion of NATO and the inclusion of Eastern European countries, is concerned with problems in the southern wing of the alliance. An article in the Washington Post Newspaper said yesterday that Admiral Joseph Lopez, NATO's Southern European Allied Forces Commander, pointed out that many problems including Turco-Greek tension were being experienced in the region. /Hurriyet/[09] KAZAKH OIL TO FLOW THROUGH CEYHANKazakhstan, which signed an agreement last week to carry Caspian oil through Russia, made another surprising statement saying that the Turkish route would probably be used for the transportation of the oil to international markets. Nurlan Balgimbayev, Chairman of the Kazakh Oil Company, held a press conference in the capital Almati yesterday and noted that the Caspian oil pipeline consortium would not use the route going to the Russian port of Novorossik along the Black Sea. According to the Interfax Agency, Balgimbayev stated that they would evaluate the alternative route which runs through Caspian-Azerbaijan-Georgia to Ceyhan, a Turkish Mediterranean port. The Kazakh official pointed out that an official statement regarding the transportation of the Caspian oil would be made at the beginning of next month. /Milliyet/[10] ERBAKAN CALLS ON ISRAELI OFFICIALS TO PARTICIPATE IN PROJECTSIsraeli Ambassador to Turkey, Zvi Elpeleg, recalled that during a meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy, Erbakan had called on Israeli officials to participate in projects worth millions of dollars in Turkey. Elpeleg replied to questions from Cumhuriyet newspaper regarding Turco-Israeli relations. /Cumhuriyet/[11] CYPRUS PEACE CONCERTA UN sponsored "peace concert" held in Taksim Square in the Green Line dividing the the two communities on the island brought at least five thousand Turkish and Greek Cypriot youths together last night.The concert featured Turkish pop star Burak Kut and top Greek singer Sakis Ruvas, in a programme designed to sow the first seeds of peace between the two sides. Groups opposed to peace on the island tried to stop the concert, and in the Greek side especially there were fierce clashes between rampant youths and the police. Nationalists on both sides however, were defeated by the enthusiasm of the majority and the concert ended on a note of optimism. /All papers/ [12] ANKARA REACTS TO GERMAN MINISTERThe Turkish Foreign Ministry has protested against comments made by German Minister for Labour, Norbert Blum, who has written remarks about Turkey that are "wholly unacceptable". Yesterday officials from the German Embassy in Ankara were summoned to the Foreign Ministry where they were handed a written protest and told to send it to Germany immediately. The German Embassy was informed that Ankara had no patience with with individuals who tried to ruin the ties between the two countries. /All papers/[13] EUROPEAN BUILDERS IN ISTANBULThe European Housing and Construction Engineers Union (UEPC), will hold its 23rd yearly conference in Istanbul on May 22-24. The conference is described as a success for Istanbul, and will provide an opportunity for almost one hundred Turkish and European construction engineers to come together.Construction standards, technical developments, investment areas and new projects will be discussed during the convention. /Cumhuriyet/ [14] TRADE VOLUME IN FREE TRADE ZONES INCREASESThe trade volume in Turkey's free trade zones increased by $360 million in April. The trade volume during the first four months of this year increased by 27 % compared to the same period last year and reached $1.4 billion. According to officials of the Foreign Trade Undersecretariat, they aimed at $4.5 billions worth of trade by the end of this year. In April, there was an increase of $200 million in trade from EU and OECD countries to free zones in Mersin, Antalya, the Aegean, Istanbul Airport, Trabzon, Istanbul Leather, Eastern Anatolia and Mardin.Meanwhile, Turkey's imports from Germany during the first three months of this year decreased by 1.2 % and fell to $1.6 billion while imports from the US decreased by 8 %. /Sabah-Cumhuriyet/ [15] INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL STARTS IN ISTANBULThe Ninth International Istanbul Theater Festival brings two weeks of exciting theater to the city, the Anatolia news agency reported. Until June 3, audiences will have the opportunity to see well-known actors from the UK, Germany and Italy in an ambitious reportoire of plays stretching from classical to experimental works.The International Istanbul Theatre Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation For Culture and Arts, encompasses conferences, workshops and exhibitions in addition to plays and performances.
