    MAY 26, 1997

Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

[01] MILITARY DETERMINED TO CLEAR NORTHERN IRAQ OF PKK

Turkish security forces have taken control of almost all of Northern Iraq, including the mountainous and rocky Zap region where the main PKK headquarters are located, clearing the terrorists from the region. A group of journalists toured the region over the weekend at the invitation of the Turkish General Staff and were informed about developments.

Thousands of Turkish troops backed by air and artillery support penetrated into the territory of Northern Iraq early on May 14 in pursuit of PKK terrorists in the region. The incursion was also supported by an operation by the Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) led by Massoud Barzani.

According to military officials, the main goal of the operation to seize the PKK's Zap region has been achieved, and a number of caves in the region used as hospital, training, administrative and logistic centers have been destroyed. /Sabah/

[02] DOSTUM SEEKS REFUGE IN ANKARA

General Abdul Rashid Dostum, Uzbek warlord fighting against the purist Talaban movement having established control over 90 percent of Afghanistan territory, arrived on Sunday in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Dostum's northern capital of Mazar-i-Sharif on Sunday appeared to be under the control of rival ethnic Uzbek fighters who had until last week been part of an alliance opposing the purist Talaban movement. The advance by the Talaban ends an eight-month standoff between the Islamic movement and a fragile coalition linking Dostum with former Afghan government forces.

Dostum who arrived in Ankara together with his familiy, claims that he came here because he had some health problems and adds that he is determined to continue his struggle against the Talaban. /Cumhuriyet/

    [03] OYMEN IN GREECE

Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen is in Greece to attend a panel meeting on Turco-Greek relations organized by the Athens-based center for political studies. Oymen said that there were positive developments in bilateral relations and added that the Turkish public wanted better neighbourly ties with Greece. Oymen stressed that Turkey favours a status quo in the Aegean and pointed out that Turco-Greek disagreements would be resolved much easier if both sides approached disagreements in this way. Oymen's statement came in response to an erroneus Greek report which suggested that Turkey was now ready to accept a change in the Aegean status quo as set up by the Lausanne Treaty of 1923. /Cumhuriyet/

    [04] THREE DYP DEPUTIES RESIGN

Since Friday, three DYP deputies have resigned from their party. DYP seats in the Parliament dropped to 118. Party "doyen" Necmettin Cevheri also resigned from his post as deputy party chairman. Party leader Tansu Ciller will hold a series of meetings with DYP deputies this week to iron out disagreements. /All papers/

    [05] SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL MEETING

The Supreme Military Council meets today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Erbakan. During the meeting, new appointments to top military posts will be discussed. Threats facing Turkey will also be taken in hand.

This week Turkish politicians will have a busy programme including a National Security Council meeting and a Council of Ministers meeting./All papers/

    [06] GREECE-TURKEY FORUM STARTS TODAY

Meetings between Turkish and Greek businessmen start today in the Ceylan Hotel, Istanbul. This will be the third meeting of the "Turkish and Greek Businessman's Forum" which meets to discuss economic developments between the two countries. Leading Turkish businessman Sarik Tara noted over the weekend that good economic ties often lead to better political relations. /All papers/

[07] EURO GOLDS FOR TURKISH WEIGHTLIFTERS

Turkey has already eight golds and a silver in the Rijeka European Weightlifting Championships. Turkey has won a commanding lead, with a number of Turkish lifters, like Ergun Batmaz, coming from the back to make a clean sweep in their own weight groups.

Hero of the second day of the contest was Hafiz Suleymanoglu who has long been overshadowed by his namesake Naim Suleymanoglu. Hafiz, an erratic lifter, has come through in Croatia and grabbed another gold for Turkey. /All papers/

[08] SCHOOL BOOKS FOR TURKIC REPUBLICS

Turkey will print school books for the Turkish speaking republics in the Latin alphabet, said State Minister Abdullah Gul on Friday. Speaking at a press conference with Education Minister Mehmet Saglam, Gul said that as a first step, 29 new school books would be printed and sent to Turkmenistan. Three million copies at a cost of 300 billion TL will kick-off the special education programme. The programme is being paid for with special funds from the Prime Ministry. /All papers/

[09] RUSSIAN MISSILE PARTS IN CYPRUS

Reports from Cyprus claim that the first batches of Russian made S-300 long-range missile parts have arrived in the Greek side of Cyprus. Turkey and the Turkish community on the island have deplored the Greek Cypriot determination to go ahead with deploying the missiles. /Cumhuriyet/

    [10] CYPRUS ECONOMIC MEETING

Despite the political tensions on the island, and the continuing contention over Greek Cypriot missile deployment, businessmen on the island met together for the first time over the weekend in Istanbul. The private leaders talked about ways to develop more cooperation between the two communities. The meetings of the Cyprus businessmen tie in with the forum of Turkish and Greek business leaders now starting off. /Hurriyet/

[11] RESHUFFLE AT DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF SECURITY

Director General of Security Alaaddin Yuksel has been appointed as the governor of Balikesir province. Yuksel was replaced by Hakkari Governor Kemal Celik. The appointment was also approved by President Demirel. /All papers/
