TURKISH PRESS REVIEWMAY 29, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] DEMIREL OFFERS DIALOGUEPresident Demirel met in Paris with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis. In this way both leaders showed their determination to initiate dialogue for resolving bilateral problems despite opposition voiced by nationalists in Greece. Within the same context, Greek government spokesman Dimitris Repas announced that Greece was ready to sign a non-aggression agreement with Turkey. /Sabah/[02] MILITARY KILL 1,838 TERRORISTS IN N.IRAQTurkish security forces have reportedly killed 1,838 terrorists in northern Iraq since the start of its two-week-old incursion into the area to clear out the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The office of the Secretary-General of the Turkish General Staff said in a statement that 1,442 had been killed during the course of ground operations while the rest were killed in air raids. Of the total, 1,037 were casualties from within and near the Zap region. Numerous weapons, ammunition, illegal documents and food had been seized by the security forces, said the statement.In the southeastern town of Mus, three female separatists surrendered to the security forces saying that they had been deceived by the PKK and had thus decided to join it. While the Turkish incursion into northern Iraq is still continuing, the Iraqi National Congress, made up of Iraqi opposition groups, has said that around 1,000 terrorists have fled to Syria from the region where the Turkish operation is taking place. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel at the weekly press conference on Wednesday said that they were continuing to warn Iran because PKK militants were escaping to Iran from northern Iraq. Akbel added that Turkey respected the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Iraq and said the aim of the operation was only to prevent terrorist attacks against Turkey. After achieving this aim, Turkish troops will be withdrawn from the region, he said. Meanwhile, Iraqi Ambassador in Ankara Rafi Dahham Mijvael El-Tikriti met with Turkish Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Ali Tuygan yesterday. It is reported that the Ambassador conveyed the Iraqi views regarding the northern Iraq operation of Turkey. On the other hand, EU Foreign Affairs Commission official Hans van den Broek said that he respected Turkey's right to protect her nation against terrorist activites. /Cumhuriyet-Sabah/ [03] PKK TEAM ARRESTED IN ISTANBULA PKK team of 26 terrorists carrying out violent operations in Istanbul has been caught by the security forces. The terrorists were extorting money from citizens in Istanbul and were killing those rejecting PKK demands for financial support. They were also planning mass murders by poisoning the drinking water in Istanbul and other big cities. /Sabah/[04] ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCEA conference to explore markets for fiber-optic, wireless and satellite communications has been organized by the KMI Corporation (Kessler Marketing Intelligence) and is being held in Istanbul between May 28-30. The purpose of the conference is to present a basis for forecasting changes in increasingly competitive markets in Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. Participants will learn how new technologies, system tradeoffs and the privatization of national post and telephone systems will affect demand for fiber-optics components, cable, and operations and maintenance systems in fiber-optic, satellite and wireless networks. /All papers/[05] TURKEY REQUESTS CHOPPER PROPOSALSTurkey will begin a "Request for Proposals" (RFP) process on May 30 with the seven foreign helicopter firms who are to submit bids for a $3.5 billion 145 attack helicopter project. Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) will request the proposals from the seven firms for different types of assault helicopters.Turkey's first step in the bidding process is for 50 helicopters out of the total 145. Turkey will strongly urge the candidate firms to provide Turkey with export licences and full transfer of technology and source codes for the helicopters. /All papers/ [06] TURCO-ISRAELI COOPERATION IN TIME MAGAZINEThe leading weekly news magazine, Time, has devoted wide coverage to the Turco-Israeli alliance in its most recent issue. The article notes that US military and economic aid to Turkey has decreased following the Cold War and said that an agreement worth $600 million between Turkey and Israel for the modernization of 54 F-4 Phantom fighter aircraft would especially bother Arab countries.The article recalled that in his recent visit to Israel, Turkish Defence Minister Turhan Tayan said: "The two countries trust each other. We have no problem with the Israeli nation. We are the two countries in this region where democracy functions fully".
