TURKISH PRESS REVIEWJULY 21, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] FIRST STEP TAKEN FOR TRNC 'INTEGRATION'Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) used the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the Turkish intervention in Cyprus to announce a program for the partial integration of the TRNC with Turkey. This has occured in the wake of the European Union Commission's recommendations with Cyprus for its full European Union (EU) membership. Turkey has said that according to international agreements Cyprus cannot be a member of any organization of which Turkey is not a member. In the wake of the EU Commission's announcement, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit countered that partial integration with TRNC was on the Turkish agenda./Sabah/[02] CELEBRATION IN TRNCSix Turkish Navy vessels arrived in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Friday for anniversary celebrations commemorating Turkey's 1974 intervention in Cyprus. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and Air Force Commender Ahmet Corekci attended the festivities on Sunday.Kicking of the celebrations with an address on Turkish Cypriot radio and television, Denktas said that neither the Greek Cypriots nor the Turkish Cypriots had the right to make Cyprus the cause of Turkish-Greek war. Reffering to the newly resumed Cyprus talks, Denktas said that these talks had been 'good'. "We have entered the path of peace and will continue to walk it", he added./Sabah/ [03] PRESIDENT DEMIREL: "TURKEY HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE"President Suleyman Demirel said Turkish people had a bright future before them with the approach of the 21st century, and that people who shared the same history, culture, civilization, language and religion should pay attention to the inherit opportunities offered by their country.On hand for the opening ceremony of the Turkish Hearths center, Demirel said that the modern Turkish nation did not consist of many religions and languages but had a all-encompassing, unified structure. "The country which was established through the genius of Ataturk is the Turkish Republic", said Demirel. Demirel stressed the importance of Central Asia and said he was proud to the flags of six other Turkish countries next to the flag of Turkey./Cumhuriyet/ [04] TRIPPLED SUMMIT IN CANKAYAPresident Demirel received yesterday evening Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Chief of the General Staff Ismail Hakki Karadayi. According to political observers during the two-hour meeting the National Security Council meeting scheduled for July 25 was discussed. Today the Council of Ministers will also convene./All papers/[05] ECEVIT OPENS CUSTOMS UNION TO DISCUSSIONDeputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit who held a news conference in Cyprus yesterday, said that Turkey had greatly suffered from the Customs Union, adding "We shall take up the issue at a cabinet meeting and take due decisions".Ismail Cem for his part, said the following at a meeting attended also by President Rauf Denktas: "We shall ask the EU to put right some of our just complaints. We shall ask the elements in our partnership, which we deem are erroneous be put right also."/Cumhuriyet/ [06] 63 PKK TERRORISTS KILLEDChief of the General Staff General Ismail Hakki Karadayi said that the Turkish army was determined to defeat terrorism and urged PKK terrorists to give themselves up to the security forces. Karadayi participated yesterday in a ceremony held to mark the success of the "Hammer Operation" initiated in the May-July period in a move to sweap away the PKK terrorist organization from Turkey.Meanwhile, in operations in Hakkari, 63 PKK terrorists were killed over the weekend by the security forces. One soldier was also killed in the clashes. /Cumhuriyet/ [07] GREEK SUPPORT FOR PKKThe "Strategy" magazine published in Greece has voiced support for the PKK terrorist organization. In its June 14 issue, the magazine extended 14 pages to the terrorist organization, praising it for its "successful struggle against Turkey". The magazine urged the Greek government to render military support to PKK. /Milliyet/[08] EUROPE'S BEST AIR TEAMThe acrobatics team of the Turkish Air Forces was chosen Europe's best team at the International Air Show held at the Fairford Air Base in Britain. Turkish pilots, competing with the teams of 38 other countries emerged as the most successful team at the show. /Hurriyet/[09] TURCO-SLOVAKIAN MANEUVRESThe Anatolia news agency reported that Turkey and Slovakia have staged joint military maneuvres in Slovakia that ended on Friday. The maneuvres ended with a ceremony attended by Slovak Prime Minister, defence minister and chief of the general staff.[10] MUSIAD ISSUES A REPORTThe Independent Industrialists' and Businessmen Association (MUSIAD) issued a report including the results and evaluations of a visit paid by a 40-person MUSIAD delegation to the US between 21-31 May. The report prepared by MUSIAD General Secretary Omer Bolak stated that the visit consisting of Chicago, New York, Washington, Dallas and Canada, aimed to seek mutual commercial and investment opportunities between the two countries. During their visit, the MUSIAD delegation headed by Chairman Erol Yarar met with businessmen, financial circles and government officials there. /Milliyet/[11] JOBS FOR 500 PEOPLE IN TRABZONWithin the framework of the "Employment and Training Project" conducted with the cooperation of the World Bank since 1993 to date, job opportunities for 500 people will be provided in Trabzon this year. Regional Director of the Employment Agency Mustafa Bahadir noted that applications made by people to attend courses were being evaluated. /Milliyet/[12] EU: CYPRUS CANNOT ENTER EU IF A SOLUTION IS NOT ATTAINEDUpon the reaction of the Turkish side against a decision of the European Commission to start full membership negotiations with the Greek Cypriot Administration, the European Union and the US sent a message saying: "Cyprus cannot enter the EU if a solution is not attained on the island".Meanwhile, the Greek government stated that vetoes it imposed on Turkey within the EU were harmful to its own interests in the long term. Yorgo Papandreu, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for EU Affairs, submitted a report of "The future of Turco-EU relations and the Greek stance" to Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and criticized the Greek 'veto policy' against Ankara. Upon the adoption of the statements in the report by Simitis, it is likely that Athens may lift the veto it imposed on the financial protocols of the Turco-EU Customs Union Accord. German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said on Friday that he 'does not approve' Greek blockage of financial aid that should be given to Turkey within the framework of the Customs Union, adding that this was 'not just' for Turkey.
