[01] YILMAZ: TURKEY IS NOT ONLY A SECURITY PARTNERPrime Minister Mesut Yilmaz on Monday started his two-day official trip to Germany in order to convince this powerful European player that Turkey belonged in the European Union (EU). Yilmaz, who is visiting Germany upon the invitation of German Chancellor Helmut, before his departure to Bonn at Atatürk Airport in a press conference said that he believed that this trip would be beneficial for both bilateral relations and Turkish-European Union relations. /Milliyet/ Cumhuriyet[02] PKK MASSACRES IN NORTHERN IRAQ BORDER VILLAGETurkish troops are continuing their successful cross-border operations against outlawed PKK camps in northern Iraq. The PKK is reportedly attacking villages in the Duhok region. Twenty-five Iraqi Kurds living in the Berwari region have been reportedly killed by PKK separatists.Regional sources have been quoted in news reports as saying that Turkish troops had cleared the separatists from these areas. Turkish F-4 and F-16 planes destroyed PKK camps in the Hakurk and Zap regions as well as the Beyaz and Hayirsiz Mountains and Sindi Valley. It is reported that Turkish ground troops have started a wide-ranging offensive against separatists and were driving towards the PKK camps at Zab, near the Turkish-Iraqi border, and Hakurk, close to Iraq's border with Iran. /Milliyet/Hurriyet_ [03] ANKARA FILES DEMARCHE OVER OBSERVER STORYTurkey has demanded an explanation from Greece over a news report by the leading British daily "Observer" saying Athens sheltered and trained Kurdish separatists in Greece, a claim long-repeated by Ankara.Ankara summoned Greek Ambassador Dimitrios Nezeretis to the Foreign Ministry on Monday for an explanation concerning the Observer's detailed article. Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Omer Akbel told reporters at the weekly press conference on Monday, referring to the report in the Observer's Sunday edition that Turkey took the article seriously as there was a background of alleged support for PKK terrorists activities emanating from Greece. /Milliyet/Hurriyet_ [04] TURKISH OFFICIALS WILL VISIT EU MEMBER CAPITALSTop Turkish officials plan an intensive round of official visits to European Union capitals to brighten Ankara's European Union prospects. The first important step in this European tour campaign will be taken with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz's much anticipated visit starting on Monday to Germany. Yilmaz is later expected to pay a visit to Austria and other EU member countries including Italy, England, France and Spain to complete a final round of face-to-face talks before the EU summit in December, when a decision about enlargement will be finalized.Deputy Foreign Minister Bulent Ecevit is also expected to visit certain Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The time table for Foreign Minister Ismail Cem's European tour is the most comprehensive with many visits planned. The dates for both Ecevit's and Cem's visits have yet to be confirmed. /All papers/ [05] TURKEY'S TUQUOISE COASTS MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONA study undertaken by the association of Hotel Managers in Turkey (TUROB) has revealed that foreign tourists visit Turkey because of its natural beauty, historical treasures and its relaxed atmosphere, the Anatolia news agency reported. According to the study 37 percent of tourists choose to holiday in Turkey for its climate and its coasts, 25 percent for its exotic ambience, 20 percent for its recreation facilities.[06] TURKEY MARKS WORLD TOURISM DAYTourism Minister Ibrahim Gurdal, officials from the Tourism Ministry and representatives from the tourism sector held a press conference over the weekend at Ankara to mark World Tourism Day. Gurdal said that Turkey had achieved its tourism target for 1997 and added that work was underway to make tourism a year-round industry. The minister also repeated his invitation to the Pope to celebrate Christ's 2,000th birthday in Turkey. /All papers/[07] PARLIAMENT CONVENES WEDNESDAYPresident Suleyman Demirel will give the opening speech to mark the beginning of Parliament's new legislative year on October 1. Parliament will then begin a ten-day recess to prepare for the election of the Parliament speaker. /Milliyet/[08] ECO MEMBERS DISCUSS WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATIONRepresentatives of the Economic Organization (ECO) began a two-day meeting on Monday in Istanbul to evaluate the Uruguay Round of economic talks and the work of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Nearly 60 people participating from the ECO countries of Iran, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Krygyzstan and Afghanistan. In addition, representatives of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which has observer status, the Islamic Development Bank, the Economic and Social Commission of the Asian and Pacific countries and the United Nations Development Program are attending. Businessmen from Turkey's public and private sectors are attending as well. The meeting is organized by the Prime Ministry's Undersecretarist of Foreign Trade. /All papers/[09] DEMIREL INAUGURATES JAPANESE-TURKISH YAZAKISA PLANTPresident Suleyman Demirel on Monday officially inaugurated the Japanese-Turkish Yazakisa plant that will produce automotive electrical wiring harnesses, and called for more Japanese companies to invest in Turkey. Yazakisa, located in Sakarya province, is a joint venture between Japan's Yazaki Corporation with a 76 percent stake, and Turkey's Haci Omer Sabanci Holding Corporation with a 24 percent share in the company.Demirel said at the opening ceremony that Japanese businessmen were showing great interest has in Turkey but said more should invest here. The Japanese firm made a $ 5.9 million investment in the plant. /Milliyet/ [10] EU REPORT ON TURKEYMeeting yesterday, the Commission for Interior Affairs at the European Parliament discussed in detail improvements in relations between Turkey and the EU in the period after customs union. During the meeting a report on the situation in Turkey prepared by German socialist deputy Martin Schultz was taken in hand. In the report it was pointed out the customs union was a heavy burden for Turkey and the EU was urged to extend financial support to Turkey. It was also noted that Turkey should continue to exert efforts for improving its human rights record and carrying out reforms, as well as for finding peaceful solutions to disagreements with Greece. /Cumhuriyet/[11] RADICAL MEASURES AGAINST INFLATIONA World Economic Forum meeting held in Istanbul with the participation of 200 representatives from 20 countries ended yesterday. In a speech at the conference, Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said that the Turkish economy was in a period of restoration. He vowed that the government will exert every effort to resolve problems in the tax system, social security and privatization.President Demirel also delivered a speech at the meeting giving details about the present situation in the country, and inviting foreign investors to invest in Turkey. /Milliyet/ [12] BUSINESSWEEK: SOUTHEAST IS REJUVENATINGAn article in BusinessWeek magazine says that a "new business life" is beginning in the southeastern region of Turkey. The article reports that 2,000 people are working in a textile plant owned by Mustafa Akyil, a businessman from Diyarbakir, and says: "These kinds of activities are against terrorism, which has been continuing in the region for 13 years". The article noted that Dogu Holding was planning to spend $250 million in the next five years for 30 new investment initiatives in the region. /Sabah/[13] EUROPEAN INSURANCE AGENTS IN ISTANBULA meeting of the working group of the European Insurances Committee was held in Istanbul on 25 September. Insurance agent representatives from 19 countries including Turkey gathered at the meeting during which many issues including the structure of the Turkish insurance market and the development of the life insurance market in Turket were taken up. /Sabah/[14] IRANIAN THREATRecently, medium-range missiles deployed by Iran have been described as a signal of the "aggresive aims" of Iran by the American press. An article in the Washington Post newspaper last month devoted wide coverage to intelligence information related to this issue. William Safire, editor in the New York Times newspaper, noted two days ago that the Iranian administration has a huge production capacity for medium-range ballistics missiles with the cooperation of Russia. He pointed out that these Iranian missiles constituted a serious threat to Turkey. /Sabah/[15] PKK KILLS FOUR VILLAGE GUARDSA group of militants of the PKK terrorist organization attacked Karahisar village in the Saray district of Van the previous evening. During the attack, four village guards were killed. Operations are continuing to capture the terrorists who escaped to the Iranian border following the incident. A car owned by Orhan Eren, a guard at Lice Prison in Diyarbakir was stopped by terrorists near Fis Plain.
