  • [01] SEZER APPROVES THE SALE OF THE TREASURY'S LANDS

    President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has approved the draft laws concerning the constructural control and sale of the agricultural lands belonging to the Treasury. According to the law, the agricultural lands that were sold will not be able to be used except for the agricultural purposes. The law will begin to be implemented as from August, 1. /Milliyet/

    [02] ECEVIT REFRESHES TRUST

    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said the government is working in harmony. Following his weekly visit to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Ecevit told reporters that the government supports the economic program determinedly. He said, "We proved this with our activities. In spite of the unfounded claims, we look to the future in confidence.Certain circles who try to prevent the government's success, harm Turkey." Ecevit aslo emphasized that the meeting with the President was very beneficial and that they had discussed economic issues. /Turkiye/

    [03] FINAL DECISION ON AMNESTY LAW TO BE TAKEN IN SEPTEMBER

    The Constitutional Court President Mustafa Bumin said that they would announce the final decision on the Amnesty Law after analyzing all rejection files arguing that the domain of the Law should be widened. Bumin said the analyses might not be completed until July 20th, which is the beginning date of the judicial recess. /Sabah/

    [04] JERUSALEM POST: "TURKEY IS OUR BEST NEIGHBOR"

    The Israeli press is continuing to praise Turkey. The Jerusalem Post stated Turkey was Israel's best neighbor. Prof. Bary Rubin who wrote the essay said, "It is very pleasing to see that Turkey and Israel are improving their relations in such a period when it is very difficult to find a friend." He reminded the trade volume between the two countries reached $1.1 billion. Rubin said bilateral relations between Turkey and Israel depend on national interests and concerns about radical powers and countries in the Middle East. He also emphasized that there is a peculiar link between the two nations neither of which can not be considered as completely European or Asian. /Cumhuriyet/

    [05] TURKEY IS ANNOYED WITH THE MIDDLE EAST

    Turkey declared her annoyance to Israeli Armed Forces destruction of the Palestinians houses in Jerusalem and Refah. According to a statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, these kinds of attacks will harm efforts to decrease violence, and to reach a peace settlement in the region. /Turkiye/

    [06] ANAP DISCUSSES PROBLEMS FOR ISTANBUL

    The State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz participated in the Istanbul meetings, organized by the Motherland Party (ANAP) Chairmanship of the Istanbul Province. Stressing that their party is sensitive to Istanbul's problems, Yilmaz said during the meetings they will discuss the chronic problems of Istanbul and try to find solutions. Addressing the meeting, Yilmaz said certain circles try to prevent their accomplishments. He added, "The people who serve the state were restrained and accused of unfounded assertions." /Turkiye/

    [07] REFORMISTS, CONSERVATIVES AT FULL SPEED

    Banned Virtue Party's (FP) reformist and conservative wings have been working at full speed ahead to form their political parties. As reformists gathered to discuss their party's policies, conservatives said they would probably apply to the Interior Ministry to ask for a routine permission to form a political party. Some 40 deputies from the banned FP, together with the reformists' new transfers from the coalition and government parties, gathered in Ankara for a meeting closed to the press. The conservative wing, on the other hand, is progressing at full speed ahead to form their party. Speaking to the press before a meeting of defunct FP's former local executives, Kutan said "we are working speedily to form a new party." /Turkish News/

    [08] TURKISH PARLIAMENTARIANS IN KOSOVO

    Democratic Left Party (DSP) parliamentarian Hayati Korkmaz and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Ankara parliamentarian Sevket Bulent Yahnici met with Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Kosovo Mission Chief Daan Everts and Vice President of the UN Temporary Kosovo Mission Tom Koeings in Pristina yesterday.Yahnici stated that Turkey always showed interest Kosovo's problems and the problems of Turks living there, as well as trying to help whenever necessary. Stating that the elections which would take place in Kosovo would be a big step in the process of democratization, Yahnici urged the Turkish community there to unite and prepare themselves for elections. /Turkish Daily News/

    [09] TURKISH MINISTERS IN BULGARIAN GOVERNMENT

    The Second Simeon National Movement will form a coalition together with the Rights and Freedom Movements which consists of Turks in Bulgaria. It is estimated that there will be at least two Turkish ministers in the coalition government. /Sabah/

    [10] YUCELEN: "NO SYSTEMATIC TORTURE IN TURKEY"

    The Minister of the Interior Rustu Kazim Yucelen said yesterday that there is no systematic torture in Turkey. "Turkey investigates every torture and sexual abuse allegation seriously, and punishes civil servants who are convicted with torture," Yucelen said. "There is a wide spread smear campaign against our country, claiming that torture is a systematic practice in Turkey. The forensic reports reveal no proof of torture but reports prepared by some doctors who are close to certain circles are used as tools to conduct a smear campaign against Turkey in the international arena," Yucelen said. /Turkish Daily News/

    [11] NUCLEAR WEAPONS AGREEMENT PROTOCOL

    The additional protocol concerning the Agreement to Prevent the Spreading of Nuclear Weapons, signed between Turkey and the International Atomic Energy Agency, has been published in the Official Gazette.The ratification of the protocol aims to strengthen the security and control systems concerning nuclear disarmament /Turkish Daily News/

    [12] EUROPEAN DAYS FOR GSU

    "Galatasaray European Days" will be organized by the Galatasaray University (GSU) European Studies and Documentation Center between October 25th-26th. Legal, economic, sociological, political and public administrational problems in Europe will be discussed during the meeting. Turkish and foreign EU experts will attend the meeting. /Cumhuriyet/

    [13] GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOT STUDENTS TO MEET IN US

    Turkish and Greek Cypriot students are to meet as part of the "Global Leaders" programme in a U.S.A Washington University in order to put forward their ideas for finding a solution for the Cyprus issue. A reception was held for the two communities which have conflicts in their region.The aim is to improve skills in finding a solution. The students came to Washington on July 1, and will be extended hospitality until Aug. 11. /Turkish Daily News/

    [14] WORLD PEACE PARK OPENED

    Besiktas Mınicipality opened "World Peace Park" on a 25 thousand square meters area in Istanbul. Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, some Ministers from the Motherland Party (ANAP) and Besiktas Mayor Yusuf Namoglu, as well as representatives from religious socities, Director of the Religious Affairs M. Nuri Yilmaz, Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomeos and the Chief Rabbi of Istanbul Rav Yahuda Adoni were attended the opening ceremony. /Turkiye/

    [15] DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS SUPPORTS TOURISM

    The Directorate General of Religious Affairs will inform tourists about the mosques and also about the Islamic religion in the Sultanahmet, Selimiye, Suleymaniye, Ulu Cami and Eyup Cami via computers. Tourists visiting the mosques will be informed about the Historical and cultural features of the mosques by selecting the language they want on the computers. /Cumhuriyet/

    SAIPEM 7000 AND CASTORO TO PASS FROM THE BOSPHORUS

    Saipem 7000 platform, which will lay two pipelines side by side at a depth of 2,150 meters into the Black Sea within the context of the Blue Stream Project, will pass from the Bosphorus on 6 August following a journey of eight days. The huge platform, which will pass from two meters below the Bosphorus, is now at the Palermo Harbor in Italy. In addition, the Castoro Otto vessel, which will be used in the same project, will pass from the Bosphorus on the 21st July and reach the Black Sea. The Italian gas group company Eni's Chairman of the Executive Board, Domenica Dispenza, said, "This project is a record project in terms of commerce, financing and depth." /Milliyet/

    [16] BOOKLET ON THE BLUE STREAM PROJECT PUBLISHED

    BOTAS Limited Company has prepared a booklet of "defence" titled against the claims concerning the Blue Stream Project, on which an inquiry is carried out by the State Security Court's Chief Prosecutor in Ankara. In the booklet, it was stated that the first agreement of the project was signed when the Refahyol party was in power. Thus, the Minister of Energy, Zeki Cakan, has started to work to make BOTAS' image better./Milliyet/

    IMF RELEASES THE LOAN AMOUTING TO 1.5 BILLION US DOLLARS

    The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gave positive signals to extend the new slice of the loan, which was given to Turkey within the context of the "stand by" of three years, amounting to 1 billion 560 million US dollars. The Executive Board of the IMF has completed their meeting, which has started at 18:00 and which has hardly ended shortly after the midnight. The IMF stated that the Executive Board had approved the eighth review concerning the implementation of Turkey's economic program. It was added, "This decision of the Board has given Turkey the opportunity of taking the loan amounting to 1.5 billion US dollars immediately from the IMF." /Milliyet/

    [17] WORLD BANK 'S LOAN APPROVED

    The administration of the World Bank has approved two separate loans amounting to 1.7 billion US dollars yesterday. During the meeting of the Executive Board of the World Bank, it was accepted that the loan within the context of the "Public Sector Harmonization Project" amounting to 1.1 billion US dollars and the other loan within the context of the "Agricultural Reform Implementation Project" amounting to 600 million US dollars. The agreements concerning these loans have been signed by the World Bank's Representative to Turkey, Ajay Chibber, and the Economy Counsellor of the Turkish Embassy in Washington, Ali Umit Gonulal. In the explanation that was made following the meeting, it was stated, "We have proven that we are the supporters and partners of Turkey thanks to this loan. This loan will increase the success of the program." /Milliyet/

    [18] GOKALP PERSUADES THE WB TO GIVE CASH

    While tensions between Turkey, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank continued due to the Telekom matter, Turkey's Agriculture Minister Husnu Yusuf Goklap has obtained their approval in relation to a number of issues in the agricultural sector. The IMF and World Bank demanded that "customs tax on animal products repealed" in connection with a $350 million project for Turkish agricultural reform. The IMF and the World Bank also demanded that grain purchases by the State Grain Board (TMO) be limited to 2.5 million tons. This clause was deleted from their letter. /Turkish News/

    NATO TO GIVE $5.2 BILLION TO TURKEY

    Turkey has contributed a total of $340 million to NATO since 1953, when it joined the organization, and to date has received $5.2 billion from NATO's funds. This means that every year, Turkey pays $7.2 million to NATO, but withdraws $112 million from its funds. /Turkish News/

    [19] TURKISH ENTREPRENEUR IN THE NETHERLANDS

    It was announced by the Dutch Ministries of the Interior, and of Economy that Turks are the most active entrepreneurs in the Netherlands among the foreign nations and that there are still 9,000 offices in the Netherlands which are opened by Turks. /Cumhuriyet/

    [20] OZILHAN'S STATEMENT

    Chairman of the Turkish Association of Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD), Tuncay Ozilhan, said the Cyprus issue, which has been continuing for 40 years, had been a potential obstacle before Turkey's membership to the European Union (EU). Ozilhan issued a statement during the press conference held with a delegation of 70 people from the Association of French Businesssmen and Industrialists (MEDEF) and said, "As the TUSIAD, we think the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) should return to the negotiation table. Unless the Cyprus problem is solved, the Greek-Cypriots' being a member of the EU will hinder the relations between Turkey and the EU. We hope that a solution will be found on the basis of the equality of two nations in Cyprus. In addition, the rights that were won within the context of the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) are ignored. During the period in which the tension has increased between the two countries the TUSIAD and the MEDEF has showed the courage to continue the dialogue. The French National Assembly's approval of the Armenian Genocide has negatively affected the relations but the two countries will find a way to overcome this negative event." /Milliyet/

    [21] BERNARD: "TURKEY BALANCES THE REGION"

    Chairman of the Executive Board of Carrefour Company, Daniel Bernard, who has come to Turkey with the delegation from the MEDEF and attended the opening of ChampionSA in Istinye, said, "Turkey is a very important element of balance in the region. France serves as a bridge for Turkey. In this sense, the relations with Turkey are very important in terms of being a member of the European Union (EU). We are following a discount policy continuously against the inflation rate in Turkey. Turkey is a critical and important market for us." Meanwhile, the French Ambassador Bernard Garcia said, "Turkey needs stability and the support of the foreign partners. These eight stores that were opened in Turkey are the most important proof of this confidence." /Milliyet/

    [22] AKCAKOCA ON THE SALE OF BANKS

    Chairman of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Board (BDDK), Engin Akcakoca, has answered the questions of Reuters news agency and said that they were aiming to sell all of the banks within the Saving Deposits Insurance Fund by the end of the year. He added that there will be some developments concerning the sale of Demirbank and Sumerbank next week. He added, "If Etibank cannot be sold by the end of September, we should decide to clarify it." /Milliyet/

    [23] SERDENGECTI'S STATEMENT

    The Central Bank Governor, Sureyya Serdengecti, said the developments in the markets could be explained with the impact of Argentina. Serdengecti made explanations to the NTV television channel and said, "The IMF administration will convene today. The conditions were met completely. While considering the situation of the markets, we think these are all the effects of the economic situation of Argentina." /Milliyet/

    [24] EXPECTATIONS FOR REVITALIZATION

    It was stated that a revitalization is expected in the economy in the second half of this year. The State Planning Organization (DPT) stated although there was a decrease in demand, consumption and investments in the first half, a recovery is expected in the second half of this year. /Cumhuriyet/

    [25] EXCAVATIONS START IN SARAGAHOYUK

    Archeological excavations have started in Gaziantep's Saragahoyuk tumulus, which has been affected negatively by the lake at Karkamis Dam. The Chief of the excavation team and Gaziantep Archeology Museum Acting Director Kemal Sertok said that the first archeological works had been carried out in Saragahoyuk in 1998, and added: "This year's excavation project is prepared by the Middle East Technical University (METU) Historic Environment Research Center (TACDAM) and will be started from classic age layers to more recent ones." /Turkish News/

    [26] SUPPORT FOR TURKISH MOVIES

    The Euroimages authorities, who recently met in Copenhagen, decided to give Euro 4.6 million to 13 European joint productions including Turkish Director Tayfun Pirselimoglu's last movie. Euroimages will aid to Vadi Van Kris Distribution Company which will distribute Omer Kavur's "Angels' House" (Melekler Evi) in Bulgaria, to Posthus Theatret Company which will distribute Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "Clouds of May" in Denmark, to Walter Nittnaus Company which will distribute "Ignorant Fairies" (Cahil Periler) in Slovakia. /Cumhuriyet/

    [27] JAZZ FESTIVALS

    Music lovers in Izmir are ready to meet Sting and Elton John in the 15th International Music Festival. Sting will also give a concert in Istanbul for the 8th Istanbul International Jazz Festival. Elton John's concert which he will give at the Ephesus Antique Theatre can be watched online. /Cumhuriyet/
