Speaking at the opening ceremony of a park in Cesme named after Council of State Judge Mustafa Yucel Bilgin, who was gunned down on May 17 by a suspected religious fanatic who opposed his ruling in a case on the headscarf ban, Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said that Turkey had finally recognized the danger. He said that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan viewed the attack at the Council of State, which resulted in the death of Bilgin and the wounding of five others, as a conspiracy against the government. Speaking in Kayseri, opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli over the weekend claimed that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) couldn’t solve Turkey’s problems and added, “Hunger, injustice and immortality; those are the things that our people have been facing under the AKP’s rule. And I will try to set up a political formation which you can give over country’s rule with contentment just like the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) in the 1980’s. Meanwhile, opposition ANAVATAN leader Erkan Mumcu stated that the allegations over his party’s former leader Mesut Yilmaz’ returning to politics were misunderstood and said, “Mesut Yýlmaz clearly declared that his existence in politics hereafter won’t be dependent on any position or post. [08] WHY CAN’T JEWISH PATRIOTS BECOME CHIEFS OF GENERAL STAFF?BY SEMIH IDIZ (MILLIYET)

Columnist Semih Idiz comments on European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn’s remarks. A summary of his column is as follows:

“European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn’s remarks which were published on Milliyet daily yesterday reflected an important truth. Turkey’s strategic importance is really rising. While the number of those understanding this is increasing in the world, I hope the people in Turkey will start to understand this truth as well and stop thinking that foreign forces can separate us. At this stage, only a Turkey which couldn’t find the balance between the realties of the country and those of the world can separate Turkey. At this stage, Spain is the pattern. This country was full of suspicions like us but then it reared up during the era of Gen. Franco because the forces governing the country could comprehend the importance of the above-mentioned balance. No matter what the people say, Spain which seems to be separating today is actually a successful country and its level of collective welfare is increasing continuously. As for the current realties of our country, we have the following: rapid and imbalanced urbanization, move from the agricultural society to the industrial society without the infrastructure, tensions in terms of class, religion and ethnic due to growing regional imbalances, terrible lack of information, a political structure which is always ready to manipulate this and an order which has no intention to remove this ignorance, huge social problems deriving from having one of the largest populations, etc.

Even this short list is sufficient to show the ‘elements’ which really separate Turkey. Meanwhile, if you want, you can call this ‘nationalism’, but the people have hugged this political concept as a savior in the past. It was also seen many times that this concept had brought the real separation. On the other hand, success of the search for a ‘patriotism’ which isn’t based on the root, religion, race, sex, etc. is obvious and it can be proven with examples. From this point of view, a Jewish citizen can become the chief of General Staff in a fair society and this wouldn’t be a problem. This is the main concept which will enable Turkey to enjoy its largeness and importance in the world. Preliminary conditions for this understanding to turn green are such factors as a democratic and economic order which makes no discrimination, mutual tolerance, unconditional respect for human rights and a legal system based on the superiority of the law. As Rehn stated, we have to understand these truths and establish a new Turkey in order to implement our strategic importance in every way. However, if we fail to do this, we will accelerate our separation and our greatness will be just a compliment.”
