  • [01] SOCIAL DEMOCRATS ATTEND 20th CONGRESS OF SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL

TIRANA, SEPT. 7 (ATA) - By A. Frasheri: Leader of the Social Democratic party (SDP) Skender Gjinushi and party deputy chairman Paskal Milo are in the United States to attend the proceedings of the 20th Congress of the Socialist International in New York between September 9 to 11, sources of the SDP said.

It is expected that this party becomes a full member of the Socialist International. To secure the membership the SDP should meet some conditions which the above sources do not want to comment whether this party meet them.

Pietro Fassino, leader of Italian Social Democrats said to the Democratic party leader Tritan Shehu in a meeting recently that he had "advised Gjinushi that his party should try to achieve alliance with real democratic forces in Albania," excluding former communists.

[02] TIRANA DP DIVISION HOLDS SESSION

TIRANA, SEPT 7 (ATA) By A. Frasheri - The Democratic party (DP) division of Tirana held a session early on Saturday in which Prof Dr Tritan Shehu, the DP chairman, discussed the ways how to organise the local election campaign on October 20.

According to the DP sources, the campaign will be organised so that the role of deputies should be greater in local levels and divisions. They will closely follow the campaign in the communes included in their electoral zones.

The DP is expected to change 85 per cent of its local government representatives with 25 per cent women and many young people.

Shehu considered the DP the most consolidated, expanded political forces, the force of the present and the future while the Red Front the regressive opponent in deep crisis.

Analysing the latest developments in the Socialist party (SP), the fight which prevails within this party since '95, Shehu said that "at present the Socialists do not believe in each other and even work to each other detriment."

He added: "The SP is still in the phase of recognising itself, in the phase of criticism within the party which is related with the fight of clans and groupings and a few attempts for reformation," which Shehu said "it will take too long considering the possibilities of this party to be reformed."

Shehu also focused on the latest congress of the SP which elected former senior officials of Ramiz Alia's government in its high-level party forums.

"The SP remain a party of Stalinist methods with non-renovated people at the head which consolidates the totalitarian methods in governing," Shehu said.

Regarding the SP foreign policy, its relations with the European left- wing, and saying that "the Socialists remain the most conservative and isolated force in Europe," Shehu underlined the fact that "neither their congress nor those who were elected did not receive any greetings from any party or international political structures." jz/ksh/ak/sh/
