    TIRANA, SEPT. 29 (ATA) - By Agim Baci: "We are resolute not to take part in the parliament," said the new Socialist Party presidency in a news conference yesterday.

    Mr Dokle, presently organizational secretary of the SP, declaring his opinion for a "illegitimate parliament," insisted that even though European parliamentarians speak of the need to take part in the parliament, SP has decided to say 'no' to this appeal. jz/xh/sh/

    [02] MINIMAL SENTENCE FOR NINE FORMER SENIOR PLA OFFICIALS

    TIRANA, SEPT 29 (ATA) - By E Xhajanka: The Tirana district court accused nine former senior PLA officials yesterday of "having committed crimes against humanity in cooperation with one another."

    The nine defendants received the following sentences: Llambi Gegprifti, Shkelqim Bajraktari and Nazmi Domi 20 years in jail, Irakli Vero and Veiz Haderi 16 years in jail, Suljeman Abazi, Idajet Beqiri, Lenka Cuko and Agron Tafa with 15 years of imprisonment.

    Defendants Nazmi Domi, Llambi Gegprifti, Shkelqim Bajraktari, Irakli Vero and Veiz Haderi were sentenced in absentia.

    The judge Medi Beci said that the nine defendants have received the minimum term of sentences after the law on the crimes against humanity in cooperation with one other.

    The defendants are found guilty of their crimes on the basis of the materials accumulated and the testimonies by the Forum of Albanian Intellectuals, signed by 36 people. They are accused that being in high party and state posts they have acted not on the basis of laws but have satisfied their passions and unjust instructions. kled/xh/sh/

    [03] MISS ENGLAND WINS MISS EUROPE 1996 IN TIRANA

    TIRANA, SEPT 28 (ATA) - By Flora Nikolla: Miss England, Marie-Claire- Harrison, 23, won the Miss Europe '96 beauty contest in the Palace of Congresses in Tirana last night.

    "Albania was my chance," the English beauty told Albanian reporters.

    Harrison won $20,000 and will take with her a 100 year old traditional costume donated by Tirana City Hall. The enigma of European beauty for 1996 was selected among 37 contestants.

    Miss Belarus, Yelena Shcherbak, 16, came second and Miss Israel, Kim Rasliakova, 18, was third.

    Taking part in the performance which lasted for more than two hours, were most renowned Albanian artists of music and ballet such as the soprano Inva Mula, the ballet-dancer Ilir Kerni with the Slovenian ballerina Almira Osmanovic David, the orchestra conducted by Zhani Ciko.

    While the invited Gypsy King, Zuchero, sang for some moments for the spectators in Albania.

    Eight European televisions broadcast the pageant live from the Palace of Congresses in Tirana and eight other televisions confirmed Saturday evening they would broadcast Miss Europe after they will have it registered. kled/xh/sh/

    TIRANA, SEPT 29 (ATA) - The Albanian dailies write today about the beauty contest Miss Europe 1996 held in Tirana last Saturday. Rilindja Demokratike entitles its editorial "The European beauty," Zeri i Popullit writes "Miss Europe bears the name of England," while Republika writes "The European beauty has her best chance in Albania." Newspaper Albania carries an article entitled "Albanian fate of Miss Europe" while Koha Jone entitles its editorial "The Misses and the Albanian image." Dita Informacion writes that "The crown for Miss England." Gazeta Shqiptare writes "Albania crowns England."

    Rilindja Demokratike also writes about the meetings of Albanian Foreign Minister in new York under the title "Support fort Albanian democratic reforms and Government." This paper also prints an article under the title "Socialists towards another boycott of elections."

    Zeri i Popullit writes about yesterday's news conference of the socialist leaders, under the title "The first step: participation in free local elections."

    Republika carries an article entitled "Socialists do not boycott but threaten..."

    Poli i Qendres makes coverage of an extended meeting of the Centre Pole entitled "Joint candidacies for municipalities and communes."

    Demokracia carries an article "Local elections - an important test for democracy in Albania," while Tribuna announces today the democratic candidate for Mayor of Tirana, Albert Brojka, under the title "Tirana 2000, a European capital."

    "Nuclear test ban treaty signed" writes Lajmi i Dites. It says that Albania is the 130th country to sign this treaty.

    "Rilindja writes "Macedonia's stability depends on the relations between the Albanians and the Macedonians."

    Albania writes that yesterday the Tirana police arrested colonel Niko Cika, as a person accused of having put his uniform at the disposal of the greatly wanted Nehat Kulla.

    In the feature, "Analysis" Dita Informacion carries an article entitled "How much will the Centre Pole win?" while Drita carries an article "We must reply antialbanian provocations under religious cover, in a cultural way and on national basis."

    Koha Jone carries another article "Media and ethnic groups in Albania." The paper publishes an interview with the member of the Sp presidency Kastriot Islami under the title "Ceka did not ask us about the candidacies."

    Gazeta Shqiptare writes about the news conference of the Socialist party under the title "The socialists do not prefer the boycott." kled/xh/sh/
