    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA)- Monday's proceedings of the U.N General Assembly, with the "Situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina" being the agenda, were also addressed by the Albanian representative to the U.N., Pellumb Kulla.

    Kulla stressed Albania's contribution to peace in former Yugoslavia and the prevention of conflict extension to the south of the Balkans, according to the Foreign Ministry press department.

    Kulla reaffirmed Albania's backing the efforts to consolidate peace, establish institutions and reconstruct Bosnia-Herzegovina.

    In the context of the Dayton accord, ambassador Kulla asked that the international community puts the Kosova issue on the agenda for finding a correct solution to the political status of Kosova.

    Expressing gratitude for the General Assembly resolutions on Kosova, Kulla asked that they be followed by an international mediation of the talks for a correct solution to the Kosova issue. s.sh/rf/kled/lm/e

    [02] "BENZ" VEHICLE THIEVES ARRESTED

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA) - Five members of a gang who had stolen at least 30 cars of "Benz" type were arrested Wednesday by police, meanwhile that another one is being hunted down.

    These persons are: A. Rameta from Durresi, A. Mali and D. Belli from Tirana, Xh. Gashi from Pristina and N. Bushpepa from Rresheni. They are accused of robbery and appropriation of the individual property.

    Police was on their track while it was investigating on the robbery from unknown persons of the taxi-driver G. Sh, inhabitant in the bus station of Kamza three weeks ago.

    On his way to Vlora, he was tied, threatened by a pistol, was left tied in Fushe-Preze, near Tirana, and was robbed of his car.

    During the investigations, it was uncovered that the intercepted persons were the authors of thieving "Benz" vehicles. /kei/mt/k

    [03] TIRANA MAYOR MEETS HIS COUNTERPART FROM ATHENS

    TIRANA, DEC 18 (ATA) By Miranda Kora: The need to deepen the cooperation of the good neighbourliness was pointed out during the meeting of Tirana Mayor Albert Brojka with his counterpart from Athens Avramapulos, held Wednesday in Tirana municipality.

    This is the first visit of Avramopulos in Tirana.

    "The essential content of our visit will talk about a better acknowledge of our people, towards an Europe without borders", said Avramopulos.

    In the framework of the annual conferences of Balkans municipalities, Avramopulos, as the head of the Southeastern European Mayors' League, proposed next year the regular conference to hold its proceedings in Tirana.

    "As a city in transition, Tirana wants the institutionalization of the relations with Athens," said Tirana Mayor Albert Brojka.

    The Week of Albania through a wide exhibition is expected to be held these days in Athens. /eva/mt/k

    [04] FIRST SERVICE "TOYOTA" OPENED IN ALBANIA

    TIRANA, DEC 18 (ATA)- By M. Spahivogli, The first service of "Toyota" vehicles in Albania opened in Tirana Wednesday.

    "The opening of this service marks the successful crowning of our two year negotiations," said Teuta Ruco, administrative director of the "Shpresa" service.

    The Albanian Red Cross in "Shpresa" will have the exclusivity of service of these vehicles known all over the world.

    In the meantime, Arco International Trading srl, Italian trade company, has won the tender for selling the "TOYOTA" in Albania.

    According to Ruco, some 300 vehicles of this type have been sold in Albania in a relatively short time, while another 200 have entered from the neighboring countries.

    The TOYOTA representative, Isusho Corporation, Michiro Sakai, told ATA that :"It is not the momentary gain that attracted us to Albania. We offer the same business chances to all states. The development level of the access country is not important to Toyota".

    Speaker of Albanian parliament Pjeter Arbnori hailed the opening of this service and said that :"I am glad the Albanians have so far chosen two well-known companies all over the world such as "Mercedes-Benz" and "Toyota". s.sh/kei/lm/K

    [05] PRESIDENT BERISHA MEETS MAYOR OF ATHENS

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA) - Albanian President Sali Berisha met Wednesday evening the Mayor of Athens, Dimitris Avramopulos, President Press and Information Office reports.

    President Berisha said that he appreciated the cooperation between two municipalities as an important factor which would directly contribute to the friendship and cooperation between our countries and people. He pointed out the very good atmosphere on which are developed the relations between our countries and expressed his belief on their future.

    "The policy of decentralization of the Albanian government is not only the fastest way for an internal development, but it also encourages local government cooperation," said Berisha. He ensured Avramopoulos and Brojka that they will have his complete support in the development between two capitals.

    Avromopoulos, thanking President Berisha for his support, said that our ancient people, placed by history near each-other, should know how to give more to one another.

    "We are decided to exploit all the possibilities to deepen and enlarge the cooperation between our municipalities. We are waiting to crown soon our efforts by achieving a Treaty of Cooperation, which will open a new prospective for Athens and Tirana", said Brojka. /mt/k

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA)- Today's Rilindja Demokratike carries the interview of Albanian Foreign Minister Tritan Shehu with the Belgian daily "Le Soir" entitled: "We intend fast association with EU".

    The paper covers yesterday's visit to Albania of the President of the National Authority of Palestine, Jasser Arafat; his meeting with President Berisha entitled:"Further step of promoting Albanian-Palestinian friendship" and his meeting with Prime Minister Meksi.

    The paper carries the speech of President Rugova at the ceremony of awarding the title: "Honoris Causa of Paris University" and the articles :"More than 400 000 Albanian pupils in Kosova protest against Serb violence" and "The Kosova issue should be resolved through an active peaceful participation of Albanians themselves".

    Under the title: "Readiness for cooperation" the paper reports on the meetings between the Ioannina mayor with Albanian top authorities".

    Zeri i Popullit, in the editorial entitled:"Disillusion and revolt under calls: "We want our money", reports on the "Sudja" firm. The paper carries the article: "The political imprisonment of Fatos Nano intended the SP split and destruction" and the article "On December 20 it was the democracy that suffered a loss not the opposition".

    Republika reports on the dramatic situation created yesterday at the "Sudja" firm.

    Balli i Kombit carries the editorial :"New elections in the party, an important political momentum for the National Front party.

    Rilindja carries today the editorial:"France commits itself to an acceptable solution for the Kosova people". The paper carries the note:"Hour of protest of more than 400 000 pupils everywhere in Kosova yesterday".

    Lajmi i Dites carries the Berisha-Arafat press release under the title:"Promotion of Albanian - Palestinian friendship".

    Koha Jone carries an article stressing that the Court signs the indictment of the Tirana prosecutor's office to arrest the ex-interior Minister, ex-Secretary general of SP, G.Ruci.

    The paper carries an interview of K. Kola, chairman of the national association of the Formerly Politically Persecuted and Prisoners with the Albanian-U.S. newspaper "Illyria" entitled :"Who will be the next President of Albania".

    Dita Informacion reports in a special article that the distribution of money by the "Sudja" firm started yesterday.

    [07] MEETING OF PRESIDENTS BERISHA AND RUGOVA

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA) - Today President of Albania Sali Berisha met with the President of the Republic of Kosova Ibrahim Rugova, President's press and information office reports.

    The two presidents expressed their thanks to the U.S. government and considered as very important the meetings of Mr Rugova with the U.S. State Secretary Christopher, congressmen and other senior officials of the U.S. administration and an increase of the commitment and interest of the U.S. to the solution of the question of Kosova.

    The two presidents highlighted the talks of Mr Rugova in the Elysse Palace and in the Foreign ministry of France. They considered indispensable the commitment of France and the European Union to the solution of the Kosova issue.

    The granting of the title "Doctor honoris causa" to Mr Rugova by the University of Paris is a sign of the recognition and evaluation by the French world of the fundamental role of Mr Rugova and the entire people of Kosova in avoiding the conflict in the region.

    The two presidents hailed the active protests of students of Belgrade and of the democratic forces in Serbia. They were of the opinion that this movement is against the Milosevic dictatorship, which is exerting most savage oppression on the Albanians of Kosova, and deserves support.

    The presidents Berisha and Rugova stressed that the democratization of Serbia through democratic and peaceful ways is an important positive development not only for Serbia but also a direct and real contribution to peace and stability in the region.

    The two presidents held that the main point of the agenda of the OSCE delegation should be the question of the execution by Belgrade of all the OSCE decisions and resolutions and especially those related with the Kosova question, as the fundamental question of the Balkan crisis. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [08] 35TH SONG FESTIVAL HELD IN ALBANIA

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA) - The 35th Song Festival starts in the Palace of Congresses in Tirana today. The 36 songs of the contest will be interpreted during the first two nights of the festival.

    All the songs will be interpreted on the third night and the selected ones will be the repertoire for the fourth night of the festival.

    After every festival performance, a talk will be held about it with the participation of singers, composers, poets, art critics and reporters.kled/xh/sh/

    [09] ALBANIAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKER MEETS WITH ARAFAT

    TIRANA, DEC 19 (ATA) - The Chairman of the Presidency of the People's Assembly of Albania, Pjeter Arbnori, today met in the Palace of Brigades with the President of the National Authority of Palestine, Yasser Arafat, spokesman of the People's Assembly reports.

    Mr Arbnori said that President Arafat and Palestine are an important factor for peace and stability in the Middle East.

    After speaking with the Palestinian friend of the democratic turn in Albania, the successful economic and institutional reforms being applied in the country, Mr Arbnori underlined that Albania is a country which has in the essence of its foreign policy the open relations of good neighbourliness. But, he said that Albania, although it is not for a change of borders through violence, defends resolutely the human and national rights of the Albanians in their territories in Kosova, Macedonia and Montenegro.

    "We have a great consideration for the Palestinian people and the Israeli people, therefore our stand is to support the efforts to construct peace."

    Mr Arbnori thanked President Arafat on the support that Palestine has given to the question of Kosova. He expressed the hope that the question of Kosova and the Palestinian question will be solved peacefully and through a fair and correct dialogue.

    President Arafat voiced his admiration for the Albanian people and the fraternal relations with the Palestinian people. He presented to Arbnori a panorama of the developments in the region, underlining the strong will of the Palestinian people to establish peace in the Middle East.

    President Arafat hailed Albania's support for the peace process and invited Arbnori for a visit to Palestine in the future. Arbnori accepted the invitation with pleasure. ake/kled/xh/sh/

    [10] PROTEST OF SERBIANS IN KOSOVA AGAINST PROTESTS OF OPPOSITION IN SERBIA

    PRISHTINE, DEC 19 (ATA) - Serbian television of Prishtine last night warned that rallies of protests will be held throughout Kosova these days by the Serbs against the opposition demonstrations in Serbia.

    Such a protest was staged in Mitrovica amidst a provoking and threatening atmosphere for the Albanian population. The Serbs supporting the dictatorial regime of Milosevic in their addresses in the protest denounced the Albanian support from Kosova and Albania for the democratic movement in Serbia, whereas Serbian opposition leaders Drashkovic, Gjingjic and Peshic were declared traitors for acting against Serbian interests in Kosova.

    The Serbian protest in Mitrovica is the second in Kosova after that held last week. The anti-Albanian spirit in Kosova threatens to provoke and add more tension to the situation. bj/kled/xh/sh/
