[02] BERAT UNDER WEIGHT OF FEAR

BERAT, MARCH 23 (ATA)-Fearful for the Berati inhabitants was also Saturday night.

The Berati streets become empty since after 13.00. Only cars move at high speed after this time. Gunshots are mostly heard beginning from the afternoon hours. Last night, besides automatic fire, explosive devices were used as well.

Other stores were damaged last night by armed groups. Several houses were raided, with many families being threatened for money. For two days in succession the local government offices have been targets of looting.

Last night at about 19:30 a person, wearing a bulletproof jacket, was killed in the "Clirimi" quarter but he is not yet identified.

Meanwhile, groups of peasants have complained to the local government that while entering the Berati town they had been attacked, and their cattle and other productions had been looted.

The lack of police presence adds to this fear. The Berati citizens appeal to the government to restore order and peace. kei/lm/k
