  • [01] SERBIAN POLICE ARREST TWO ALBANIAN YOUTH IN MITROVICA

    PRISHTINA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - Inspectors of the Serbian police arrested on Thursday afternoon two Albanian youth whose identity was unknown, near the bus station in Mitrovica, the Center for Information in Kosova reported.

    They were brutally maltreated by the police at the place.

    The police commissariat no. 4 in Mitrovica was enforced two hours before the arrest of the Albanian youths. The motive of the arrest is not known. pta/mp/ak/e

    [02] PRESS REVIEW

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - Rilindja Demokratike covers the election rallies of President Berisha with inhabitants of Has, Kukes, Puke and Mirdita under the title "No vote to rebellion." The paper says that "a frontal fight to live or die between rival gangs started on Friday in Vlora." The paper says that a small convoy of Alba forces was blocked in Fier for about an hour by a group of 20 armed persons. In its third page, the paper says that the SP while trying to give a parliamentary seat to Zani, Shyti and Ruci, is creating a parliamentary-gang group. Regarding the electoral campaign of the SP the paper says "The Socialist leader warned of Albania's capitalism." It carries in its fourth page, an article saying that the left gangs in the south of Albania, send 50 percent of their daily profits in a fund in Greece called "Liberty fund." According to the newspaper this fund will serve to pay the amount of money the Socialist Nano owes to Albanian justice. Referring to the transparency of the pyramid schemes, the paper says "Naked Socialists before electoral cheat."

    Zeri i Popullit says in its first page "A new policy for a normal Albania." Its editorial is entitled "To save June 29 from provocations". Meetings of the Socialist leader Nano in Lushnje, Dushk and Rrogozhine are covered by the paper under the title "With the people against rulers." Regarding the transparency of the pyramid schemes the paper carries the articles "Doublet, again in the hand of president" and "General Prosecutor's office: pro Malaj against President." In the Actuality column the paper says "Damages caused in 115 Italian firms are estimated at 60 million dollars" and "Italian investors are thought to leave Albania."

    Republika says in its first page that Sudja is expected to be free from the court room and that the "Albanian mafia is being legalised in Turkey." The paper entitled its editorial "Leka I does save neither Berisha nor Durollari." In its second page the paper reports on the Alba's operation to clear the Fier-Lushnje axis. The paper says "Bosses of pyramid schemes to face trial soon. 60 prosecutors and 200 financiers assume transparency." Under the title "2 500 divorces in six months" the paper carries INSTAT data on divorce in Albania in the last six months.

    Albania carries the editorial entitled "Election of June 29 - a triumph over rebellion". The paper carries an article in the third page on the Italian aid for Albania in 1991 when Fatos Nano was a prime minister. Regarding the latest events in Vlora, Albania says "Gangs surround Vlora" and "Alba replaces weapons with brooms."

    Independent says "Berisha: Malaj - insincere cheat." The paper reports the customs and fiscal duties on flour have been removed. The paper covers yesterday's event in Vlora under the title "Regular rebellion forces march in the central boulevard. The city on the alarm for a possible visit of president."

    Rilindja covers the press conference of the President of the Republic of Kosova Dr Ibrahim Rugova under the title "However, elections will be held in Kosova". Under the title "Presidency speaks up on problem of transparency of pyramid schemes," the paper says "Minister Malaj has committed gross legal violence." In its fourth page the paper carries the electoral campaign of the Democratic and Socialist party.

    Tribuna says "20 million dollars of "Sudja" former foundation are in an apartment in Tirana." The paper carries the article "Nothing new from the front of the party round table." Regarding an interview of Berisha with the Croatian television on Kosova problem, the paper says "Berisha accuses international community on a passive stand to Kosova."

    Koha Jone carries an interview with the spokesman of Vranitzky under the title "Elections, Alba at the ballot boxes?" The paper reports that the distribution of ballot boxes started earlier today all over Albania." The electoral campaign of the Socialist leader in Lushnja is covered by the paper under the headline "Nano 'occupies' Lushnja and promises money. "Alba blocked with bombs and Kallashnikov rifles", the papers says in the eleventh page.

    "Reliable sources of the World Bank tell about the place where the money of pyramid investment schemes are" - Money in Turkey and Liechtenstein," the paper Dita reports. It says that Silva money-lending company interrupts distribution of money. The paper quotes Perparim Sanxhaku, lawyer of Fatos Nano as saying that Nano will plead his innocence. This is done at a time when the Albanian press is speaking about the reopening of a process by the Account Court in Italy on aid to Albania when Nano was prime minister.

    Gazeta Shqiptare says "Burst of gun-fire in Vlora: "Berisha is coming" - "Shots and tension in the city after untrue news, two wounded." In its seventh page the paper carries an interview with former prime minister Aleksander Meksi. eva/ak/e

    [03] ITALIAN GOVERNMENT FACILITATES WORK OF CEC ON ELECTION DAY

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - By Dorian Koca: The Italian Government will put at the disposal of the Central Elections Commission (CEC) two helicopters to facilitate the work of this commission in the election day, on June 29.

    Both helicopters will help in the transportation of the members of the commission on the election day.

    "120 observers of OSCE are registered in the Central Election Commission, who have the right to intervene in the polling stations if they notice irregularities during the voting process," the members of this commission, Arben Xhiku, told ATA.

    Xhiku explained that all the other observers, Albanians or foreigners, who are not under the umbrella of OSCE, have the right only to monitor and not to intervene in cases of irregularities during the voting process.

    Every political party, according to Xhiku, will have 37 observers in the whole country on the election day. /eva/mt/z/

    [04] PRESIDENT BERISHA MEETS WITH INHABITANTS OF RRESHEN

    RRESHEN, JUNE 21 (ATA) - By Zef Pergega: In the course of his electoral tournament in several Northern districts of Albania, the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, met Friday with thousands of inhabitants in the town of Rreshen and nearby villages. In the meeting organized on this occasion was presented the candidate for deputy of the Albanian Democratic Party in the electoral constituency no 20 of this district, Gjon Gjonmarkaj.

    Greeting the participants in this meeting, President Berisha said that the alternative of the Democratic Party will provide Mirdita welfare, improvement of the infrastructure, free movement, employment. He expressed the conviction that the people of Mirdita will say "no", on June 29, to the anti-national alternative of dividing Albania, of the national violence and of the pyramid of fraudulence, represented by the Albanian communists.

    Attending the meeting was also the chairman of the Albanian Democratic Party, Tritan Shehu./eva/mt/sh/

    [05] POLITICAL PARTIES TO PROTECT FREEDOMS OF PRESS DURING ELECTION CAMPAIGN - SOCIETY "ARTICLE 19"

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - By R. Floqi: The international organization against censure "Article 19" addressed on Friday a letter to all the Albanian political parties, in which it asks the protection of the freedoms of press and the rights of journalists during the electoral campaign.

    The Article 19 has called on the political leaders to secure that the candidates and their supporters respect completely the rights of the others, including also the expression of freedom of political opponents.

    The association XIX appeals on the government to take the responsibility to allow mass media and press move freely and the journalists to inform without being afraid of threatening. /kled/mt/sh/

    [06] SANT EGIDIO AIMS AT SIGNING PACT AMONG ALBANIAN PARTIES IN ROMA

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - By R. Floqi: The community of Sant Egidio in Tirana has been the organizer of a meeting to be held on Monday in Roma between the groupings and main alliances of the Albanian political parties for signing a social pact, representative of the community in Tirana reports.

    "In this meeting, which aims at signing a social pact for the elections in Albania, two representatives from each party coalition will participate," the representative of the catholic mission in Albania, Mon Signor Paolo Rago, told ATA.

    So, on Monday in Italy will meet the chairmen of the parties Tritan Shehu (DP) and Guri Durollari (LMP) for the Union for Democracy, Sabri Godo (RP) and Hysen Selfo (NFP) for the coalition the Albanian Right Wing, and Fatos Nano (SP) and Skender Gjinushi (SDP) for the grouping of the left parties.

    "We are a religious catholic mission and as so we are not engaged in politics, said Mr Rago, but we demand peace be restored in Albania, and elections be free and quiet."

    In the agreement that the Sant Egidio Mission has drafted several points are included, in which are asked the election campaign be quiet and fair, and a coalition government be established after the elections to the favour of social peace in the country.

    The community, which has experience in such mediation, like that in the Albanian-Serbian talks for the education in Kosova, has started its activity with humanitarian projects in Albania since 1991.

    "All the guests have accepted the invitation," reports Mr Rago, who adds that before the meeting, the representatives of the Albanian political parties will hold a meeting with the Italian Defence Minister, Beniamino Andreatta. Italy leads the "Alba" mission of the Multinational Protection Forces in Albania, where it is represented by a contingent of more than 3000 troops. /jz/mt/sh/

    [07] FROM MEETINGS OF ALBERT BROJKA IN ROMA

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - During his stay in Roma, the Mayor of Tirana, Albert Brojka, (candidate for deputy of the Albanian Democratic Party), who will participate in the meeting of the European Democratic Union (EDU), held meetings with the deputy Ranieri, chief of the Left Democratic Party, and with deputy Martino, chief of the Foreign Sector of Forza Italia, DP press and information department reports.

    Brojka informed in these meetings on the situation in Albania in the brink of elections, as well as on the resolution of the Democratic Party to hold them on June 29, despite the difficulties encountered in different zones of Albania.

    Ranieri was interested in the free movement of deputies in different electoral constituencies, as well as on the current engagement of the Multinational Protection Forces in this direction.

    Martino expressed his concern on the respect of the voting result and the necessity of this respect to enable the application of a "Marshal" plan in Albania, as an indispensability for the restoration of the country. /s.sh/kled/mt/sh/

    [08] GREEK MILITARY MOTOR-BOAT SHOOTS BY ANTI-AIRCRAFT MACHINE FLAT AND OTHER BUILDINGS IN KSAMIL - reports the Interior Ministry -

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - Today, by 04.00 in the morning, in the sector of the boarder post in Ksamil (Southern Albania), in the place called "The islands of Ksamil", 500 km far from the sea shore, a Greek military motor boat has shot by anti-aircraft 12.7 mm several times on a flat and some other buildings in the town of Ksamil, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry reports.

    Due to this attack the windows of these buildings have been broken. No reports on damages are available so far.

    The specialized police bodies are working to uncover the circumstances and causes of this event, ends the report of the Interior Ministry spokesman./s.sh/kled/mt/sh/

    [09] POLITICAL PARTIES CONTINUE ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN FOR JUNE 29 POLLS

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - The Secretary General of the Albanian Democratic Party, Genc Pollo, candidate for deputy in the constituency no. 93 in the district of Korce, has launched a series of meetings with inhabitants of this zone. Pollo considered DP as the only serious force, which can pull the country out of the anarcy where the communits rebellion drove it into. Mr Pollo explained this rebellion considering the inheritance of the Socialist Party and its phylosophy of violence.

    The Forum for Democracy, led by SP, said Pollo, had declared before the rebellion that all the town halls would be torched.

    The candidate for deputy of the Albanian Democratic Party, Muhamet Ukperraj, has held recently rallies with the electorate oin the villages of Golaj, Likuic, Fajza, Parrlac, Kolsh, Zapod, Velcan, etc.

    The attention in the meetings was focused on the problems of the inhabitants of this zone.

    The Human Rights Union Party presented in a rally organized Saturday in the cinema hall "Republika" of the town of Shkoder, its candidates for deputy in the district of Shkoder and Malesi e Madhe.

    The chairman of this party, Vasil Melo, presented in his speech some directions of the program of this party in the economic field.

    The candidates for deputy of the Albanian Socialist Party, Spartak Braho, Alush Xhihani, Iliriana Kercuku and Bardhyl Agasi, held recently rallies with the electorate in Ishem, Manze, Sukth, Maminas, as well as in the quarter no. 6 of Durres.

    The candidates for deputy of SP stressed in these meetings that the Socialist Party will govern in cooperation with all the democratic opposition parties./eva/kled/mt/sh/

    [10] TERROR EXERTED ON Mr.L.DEMI,SECRETARY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF DP

    Tirana, june 21 /ATA/ Terroristic gangs initiated by the Socialist Party, captured today in Saranda's town, (south-ouest Albania), and exerted terror on Mr.L.Demi secretary of International relations of the Democratic Party.

    This happened while he was introducing the deputy of the DP in that district.

    While they were exercising violence on Mr.Demi, the gangsters asked him to make statements against the DP and President Berisha.

    There is no confirmation yet, whether Mr.Demi is released or not. /JZ/Z/

    [11] DIFFERENT PERSONS PUT PRESSURE ON CONSTITUTIONAL COURT CHAIRMAN

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - A report of the Constitutional Court says that different persons, even employees of the Prosecutor's Office, through the telephone calls in the late hours of night, put pressure on the chairman of the Constitutional Court on concrete cases this Court is examining.

    No kind of pressure or concern from the others can influence on the protection of the independence and equilibrium of the Constitutional Court or its special members in the solution of the cases, ends the report of this Court. /s.sh/kled/mt/Z/

    [12] ALBANIAN YOUTHS STILL INTERROGATED IN KOSOVA

    PRISTINA, JUNE 21 (ATA-CIK) - The Albanian youths, accused of being members of the "territorial defence", have continued to be interrogated on Friday and Saturday in the center of the Serbian Sigurimi in Gjakove.

    Kujtim Stavileci and Ramazan Berkani were interrogated on Friday, while Bashkim Lota was interrogated on Saturday, all from Gjakova.

    Along with the accuses of being members of the "territorial defence", these youths are also interrogated on their sportive activity several years ago.

    In the last ten days, with this pretext, 16 people have been interrogated, some of them have been maltreated physically, while almost all of them, under the pressure of inspectors, are forced to sign statements, drafted by the inspectors themselves. /ag/kled/mt/sh/

    [13] PRESS RELEASE OF ALBANIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY

    TIRANA, JUNE 21 (ATA) - The presentation of the candidate for deputy in the constituency no 115, Dhimiter Lapa, was planned to be launched today at 12:00 in Saranda (Southern Albania). Attending this rally was also the Foreign Secretary of the Democratic Party, Leonard Demi, says a release of DP Press and Information Department.

    At that time they were attacked by armed groups, gangs of Gramoz Ruci (former Interior Minister), SP candidate for deputy in this town, who have hit, tortured and terrorized the Foreign Secretary of the democratic Party, Leonard Demi.

    The senior official of DP is actually hostage of gangs, who ask from him to make public statements against DP and President Berisha.

    The Democratic Party, expressing its profound indignation, condemns the terrorist act of taking hostage its senior leader and asks from the Government and Premier Fino to urgently intervene to set free Mr Demi. The life of Mr. Demi is threatened in every moment, that's why the Government should intervene immediately with all its possible power, otherwise the electoral process is gravely compromised.

    The Democratic Party stresses that this grave and unprecedented act is the gravest infringement of the electoral campaign.

    Informing and protesting near the Central Election Commission, the Democratic Party, remembers that this is not the first case in an entire campaign of terror against the members, supporters, local leaders, DP members of commissions, its electoral activists, by the gangs of the left extreme, ends the report of DP Press and Information Department. /jz/mt/

    [14] LEONARD DEMI ALLOWED TO LEAVE SARANDA

    SARANDE, JUNE 21 (ATA) - By Dorian Koca: According to the sources of Police Commissariat in the district of Sarande, today at 19:00, Mr Leonard Demi, Foreign Secretary of the Democratic party, was allowed to leave the town of Sarande.

    Mr Demi went to the town of Sarande on Saturday to present the candidate for deputy of this party, Dhimitraq Lapa, in the constituency 115 of this district.

    But, at 12:00, in the hall of the district council of Sarande, where the electoral rally had started, armed persons entered the hall, who, while firing volley of bullets, asked the rally be not held and Mr Demi leave Saranda.

    Violence was exerted on Mr Demi and he was asked to make pronouncement against the Democratic Party and President Berisha. /mt/
