  • [01] HEADS OF ALBANIAN JUSTICE INSPECT SOUTHERN COURTS

    TIRANA, SEPT 6 (ATA) - The leaders of the Albanian justice, Thimjo Kondi and Artan Hajdari inspected on Friday the courts of South and the jail of Bence, damaged during the recent riots.

    During this inspection, Kondi and Hajdari visited the courts of Mallakaster, Tepelene, Gjirokaster and Permet.

    In the meeting with the officials of courts in these districts, Minister Kondi defined two emergent stages: the immediate reconstruction of courts with the accorded funds, continuation of judicial processes, and in the second stage the professional juridical test of judges and the judiciary administration.

    The Minister of Justice has closely seen the situation of 15 courts in Southern, Northern and Middle Albania and will soon inspect the courts in Northeastern and Southeastern of the country.

    During the turmoil in March, some 15 courts were completely destroyed and some others were partially damaged. The courts of Fier and Shkoder, which were completely destroyed, are to be put into function by next week. In the other courts, work is going on for their reconstruction.

    Jails are also under construction. Out of 7 prisons, completely destroyed during the unrest, the jails 313 and 325 in Tirana, and those in Lushnje, Burrel and Lezhe are actually put into function. Work is expected to start within next month for the construction of the new jail of Vaqarr and the reconstruction of the prison of Bence. /kled/mt/Z/

    [02] SOME 17 MAJOR OFFICERS OF ALBANIAN ARMY NAMED

    TIRANA, SEPT 5 (ATA) - Albania's Defence Minister Sabit Brokaj, upon the proposal of the Council of Ministers and decree of President of the Republic, communicated on Friday midday the new appointments to 17 senior officials of the Defence Ministry and commanders of divisions, the spokesman reports.

    These appointments were made in the context of measures taken for the reorganization and restoration of the Albanian army, destroyed during the turmoil in March of this year. /jz/mt/Z/

    [03] PRESIDENT MEIDANI EXPRESSES AFFLICTION FOR DEATH OF MOTHER TERESA

    TIRANA, SEPT 5 (ATA) - Albania's President Rexhep Meidani learnt with deep affliction about the death of Mother Teresa, of this great symbol of universal goodness, the President's spokesman reports.

    Mother Teresa, said Meidani, was a great citizen of the world, and she travelled all round it to serve to the poor people with her affecting humility.

    Mother Teresa was also a great Albanian and her loss has afflicted all the Albanians. In these difficult times for our people, her name and example were necessary as a symbol, where the high values of tolerance and human solidarity found shelter, values which should serve as a referring point to all of us, said Meidani. /mt/Z/

    TIRANA, SEPT 6 (ATA)- Today's newspapers report on the death of Mother Teresa. Zeri i Popullit carries the article "Mother Teresa, the best expression of goodness and sacrifice." Rilindja Demokratike carries the articles "Mother Teresa arrives in paradise," and "DP expresses affliction for Mother Teresa." Republika carries the article "The angle of poor people died," Rilindja reports on her death. Koha Jone publishes the article "The world mourns. Saint Teresa died," while Albania carries the article "The Albanian saint of the world died." Dita covers the death of Mother Teresa under the title "Mourning day throughout Albania. Albanian embassies abroad open doors for homages." Gazeta Shqiptare publishes the article "The Albanian saint died out."

    The papers also cover other topics.

    Zeri i Popullit under the title "The new Albanian policy is valued," reports on the meeting of President Meidani with Van der Stoel (special envoy of OSCE chairman for Kosova). The paper publishes the article "Generals discharged in the Defence Ministry." The paper carries the article "The World Bank has to implement 20 projects for an undelivered amount of 130 million dollars." The paper carries the article "Albanians propose Nobel Prize for Vranitzky" and ""For Albanians, Vranitzky should be the man who would find the solution."

    Rilindja Democratike carries the editorial "New violence for the press functions from times," as well as a letter, which according to the paper, the Albanian refugees of Bari send to President Meidani, Premier Nano and Speaker Gjinushi, under the title "if you turn us back, will response." The paper carries the article "Austrian President Klestil appeals on Meidani "Guarantee the life of Arbnori and the reconciliation." The paper also publishes the article "Tirana and Shkoder protest in support of Arbnori's strike."

    Republika carries the editorial "The press on the brink of death," and "VEFA company will distribute money in September 13."

    Rilindja reports in its article that from the visit of Rugova in Germany is expected a more serious engagement of the Kosova question. The paper also publishes the article "Serbian policy - with an anti-Albanian platform."

    Koha Jone reports in one of its articles that on the verge of the congress of euro-socialists, contradicts between Nano (SP chairman) and Meta (SP deputy) appear. "The split returns in SP", reports the paper. The paper carries the article "Changes increased in the DP status. More space for the fractions." The paper carries the note "When will the current government show its pockets."

    Albania reports in its editorial that violence against the mayors of some districts (of DP) is now made by the socialists under the slogan "On behalf of People." The paper carries the article "50 deputies prepare separation from SP," as well as the article "Motionists of SP prepare removal of SP leadership Nano."

    Gazeta Shqiptare reports in an article that yesterday President Meidani discharged 11 senior military officials. The generals to the court," reports the paper on this occasion. /jz/mt/Z/

    [05] MOTHER TERESA - A SYMBOL OF HUMANISM AND SOLIDARITY - premier

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA) - Albanian Prime minister Fatos Nano expressed his deep regret and despair for the death of Mother Teresa and considered it a great loss for the Albanian nation.

    "Naturally, it was a heartbreaking news for all the world, but especially for us Albanians," Nano said.

    "Mother Teresa was a living Saint to eternity. Our small planet lost a symbol of humanism and solidarity. People in need, but not only those, lost their Mother, one can find everywhere. Our Albanian world lost a sublime incarnation of values of her old and beneficent civilisation.

    "I hope, we and others can use the name, spirit and heart of Mother Teresa as a cradle of national reconciliation and all Albanian solidarity," the Albanian Prime Minister said. ak/

    [06] SPD NATIONAL COUNCIL ELECTS SOCIAL-DEMOCRAT SECRETARY GENERAL

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA)-By A. Simoni. The Social Democratic Party, SDP, appointed the new party leaders at its National Steering Committee today.

    The SDP Secretary General, Dhori Kule, was elected by a majority of votes. He replaced Gaqo Apostoli, who is also Minister of Transports.

    The Social-Democratic Party today also changed its structure. The SDP, becomes the first small party, after the two major ones, SP and DP, to be run by secretaries. kled/lm/sh/

    [07] PARLIAMENTARY PARTY ROUND TABLE ON CONSTITUTION TO BE HELD ON SEPT. 9 - Godo

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA)-The chairman of the Commission for Drafting the Constitution, Sabri Godo, today invited the parliamentary party to meet to discuss the issue of the state fundamental law.

    "It is a meeting to exchange views about the Commission and constitution in general," Godo said, adding that the meeting will be held on Tuesday at 10.00.

    The party's round table is considered by the democrat opposition as the sole way to start proceedings on the constitution. While for the socialists, the meeting has only consultative character for the Constitution Drafting Commission. kled/lm/sh/

    [09] EARLY LOCAL ELECTIONS AFTER REFERENDUM ON CONSTITUTION - speaker

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA)-By A. Simoni, Albanian parliamentary speaker Skender Gjinushi, chairman of the Social-Democratic Party, SDP, told ATA today, after the meeting of the National Committee of the SDP, that changes had been carried in the party leading structures and the national conference would be called in October, "as we are ahead of the referendum for the constitution and local elections".

    Gjinushi decided that the early local elections be held after the referendum for the constitution, scheduled for March 8,1998. s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [10] PRESIDENT MEIDANI MOURNS WITH MOTHER TERESA'S SISTERS IN TIRANA

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA)- By S.Sharrexhi, On Saturday in Tirana, the President of the Republic, Rexhep Meidani, mourned the death of Mother Teresa with her sisters and with the head of the Albanian Episcopacy, Monseigneur Rrok Mirdita.

    "I bow in the name of all Albanians to a distinguished daughter with a great heart, to this titan of the human soul, with deep sorrow and devotion to her divine deeds," Meidani wrote in the book of condolences at Mother Teresa's house in Tirana.

    Mother Teresa (Gonxhe Bojaxhi), a saint of Albanian origin, was born on August 10, 1910 in Skopje and died on Friday of a heart attack, at the age of 87, at her Missionary Order in Calcutta.

    She devoted her whole life to the poor worldwide.

    In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian mission. s.sh/kled/lm/ki

    [11] INITIATIVE OF ALBANIAN PRESIDENT : ALL-NATIONAL CONVENTION ON KOSOVA

    TIRANA, SEPT. 6 (ATA)-By Aurel Simoni, An all-national convention on the Kosova issue, is the initiative of Albanian President Rexhep Meidani.

    He made this known to leaders of the Academy of Sciences and to the head of the Parliamentary Foreign Commission, Sabri Godo, at a consultative meeting today.

    They also discussed the modalities of attaining this aim.

    The Foreign commission chairman unveiled the idea of an all-national convention to discuss the national issue, which Meidani has been preparing since several days ago. kled/lm/sh/
