  • [01] A WOMAN IN DURRES DETAINED FOR PROSTITUTION

    DURRES, NOV 7 (ATA) - By S Gjordeni: A woman was detained on Thursday by police in Durres under the charge of encouraging and exerting prostitution.

    Police sources detained last night Albina Pjetri, 23, born in Rreshen and resident in Durres, a mother of two.

    The act of police was based on the fact that Pjetri had mediated for allowing prostitution in her home.

    Also the same sources say that the accidental killing of Sofika Moka two days ago by the 12-year-ol girl Engjellushe Marku is related with Pjetri for whom the little girl had a revenge to take.

    Respective bodies are probing into the case. pas/xh/

    [02] PRESS REVIEW

    TIRANA, NOV. 7 (ATA) - Zeri i Popullit dedicates a page to the summit of Crete publishing the article "Step towards the right direction," and several articles of the Greek press on the meetings of Albania's PM Fatos Nano in the framework of the Crete summit. Covering the sitting of Thursday of the penal process against former deputy Mazreku, the paper reports "DP deputies will be brought to the room court by force." The paper also covers a meeting of SP Secretary General Pandeli Majko with the political secretary of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Thierry Mallret, in which it was requested the intensification of cooperation between Albania and this bank. The paper carries an article on the third Congress of the Republican Party, which says that the chairman of this party was elected Fatmir Mehdiu, former deputy chairman. The paper also carries a message of SP head and Premier Fatos Nano, under the title "A strong opposition, not of the barren boycott."

    Rilindja Demokratike reports "The government conquests Vefa", regarding the auditors who started their job in this company. The paper carries the editorial "The black hundred days of Nano," which says that the first 100 days of Nano governing clearly showed the Albanians that the violated elections of June 29 were not political solution for the country. The paper writes that the leaders of local government do not work in the whole country as a sign of protest against the central power and "as resistance against the communist revenge of the current government." The paper reports that "Bukoshi (Kosova PM) calls Nano (Albania PM) to account," regarding the meeting of the latter with the Yugoslav President Milosevic in Crete. The paper carries an interview of the newly elected chairman of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, under the title "No protests, but round tables."

    With regard to the establishment of auditors of the government in the Vefa company, Republika reports "Alimucaj is reconciled with Malaj." The paper publishes the editorial "Godo gives lecture to the politics," regarding his withdrawal from the post of RP chairman on Thursday, in which after mentioning the fact that many Albanian politicians do not know the institution of resignation, the article writes that "Godo became so a lecturer in politics." The paper also carries an interview with Godo under the title "I did not resign, I simply did not put up my candidature." The paper reports that the Prosecutor's office has requested the removal of immunity to the DP deputies, among whom former President Sali Berisha, due to the illegal protests. The paper carries a special article on which the media and politicians react after the meeting Nano-Milosevic, under the title "Kosova: Nano did not keep the faith."

    "The message of the old man Godo," is the editorial of Koha Jone. "Different from the other party leaders, who have asked the aid of manipulations to stay on their posts, Godo refused his election for the third time," reports the paper. With regard to the congress of Republicans, the paper also publishes an article on the third page, under the headline "sudden decision of the Republican head." On the second page, Koha Jone reports that the Interior Ministry has sent to the prosecutor's office a file in which former President Sali Berisha is accused of setting free through his decrees the prisoners charged for grave crimes. The paper reports that the Democratic Party has already made ready the "ghost government." On the fourth page, the paper, citing sources from Belgrade, reports that in Serbia "everyone was pleased from the meeting Nano-Milosevic." The paper reports that Premier Nano held an enigmatic meeting on Thursday with U.S. ambassadress in Tirana, Marisa Lino.

    The paper also informs that the Tirana town hall has not accepted to implement "the blockade ordered by democratic leader Berisha" to interrupt the work and to block the salaries of persons named by the government. "Vefa, the auditors arrived," writes the paper with regard to the transparency process of pyramid schemes. On the same topic the paper carries the article "'Deloitte & Touche' sign with Malaj." On the cultural page, the paper publishes an article regarding the spectacle "Miss Albania 1997."

    "The money of Vefa unblocked," reports Albania. The paper entitles its editorial "The communists will govern for a long time." "The main state institutions do not enjoy the confidence of citizens and the political life is completely in collapse," reports the paper. "Godo withdraws, Mediu, the new chairman of the Republican Party," reports Albania paper under the headline "The third congress changes the head of republicans." Kosova asks explanations for Crete," reports the paper regarding a telephone conversation between both premiers Nano and Bukoshi. With regard to the meeting Nano-Milosevic, the paper publishes the article "The shame and betrayal do not have an end," under the headline "Nano offended more than half of the nation, he humbled the legitimate bodies of Kosova."

    Dita reports that "the independent deputy" of Berati, Maksim Hasani, is holding a political tournament in Gjirokaster, in a bid to reestablish the Communist Party.

    "Hasani asks for the house of Enver," reports the paper, quoting Hasani as saying "The CP does not need organisation, its structures are ready." With regard to the Congress of republicans, the paper carries two articles "Godo, the apple of discord of the party," and "Godo does not need an honorific post." On the sixth page, the paper writes "The new secretaries of local government arrive in Vlore." The paper also reports regarding the decision of the Vefa President, Vehbi Alimucaj, to accept auditors in his company. On the twelfth page, the paper reports that the ecologists have asked taxing of oil vehicles, due to the smog they create in the town.

    Under the title "The meeting Nano-Milosevic is extremely problematic," Rilindja carries on the fist page a statement of the counselor for information of the Kosova president Ibrahim Rugova. The paper also publishes reactions of Albanian parties of Kosova regarding the meetings of Crete. Here are some of the titles: "The meeting did not bring anything positive," "Can half of the people become community,?" "The anti-Shqiptarism (Albanian) of Crete," "No real estimation can be made," "Who has the mandate of betrayal." Rilindja covers the trial against 21 Albanians in the Serbian court of the Prishtine circle.

    With regard to the establishment of auditors in the Vefa company, Gazeta Shqiptare reports that "peace was finally reached between both parties." The paper dedicates its editorial to this topic "The surprise of peace." With regard to the murder of the chief of police armament in Shkoder, the paper reports that "The murder of the chief, new speedway," with the subtitle "He was witness of depots storming." /kei/pas/mt/k

    [03] TOWN HALL OF DURRES DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE CALL FOR STRIKE

    DURRES, NOV. 7 (ATA) - By S Gjordeni: The employees of the town hall in the city of Durres went to work on Friday, rejecting the call for strike.

    Thus, the town hall of this city did not respond to the call of the meeting of mayors and commune chairmen, representatives of the Democratic Party and its head, former Albanian President Sali Berisha, for a strike of protest against the revenge of the central power, as they considered it.

    In the town hall of Durres, despite the appointment of the new secretary, no other employee has been fired. /kei/mt/k

    [04] PAINTING EXHIBITION, DEDICATED TO MOTHER TERESA, INAUGURATED

    TIRANA, NOV. 7 (ATA) - By F Nikolla: The personal exhibition of the painter and architect, Ilir Fico, was inaugurated Thursday in Tirana in one of the halls of the National Historic Museum, in the framework of the work for the collection of materials, which will compose soon the exhibition "Mother Teresa and Albania."

    Forty works of aquarelle, belonging to expressionism, were visited during this inauguration by renowned personalities of art, culture and religion.

    "This is only the beginning of the work to honor the undecla red saint of this end of the century," the director of the National Historic Museum, Moikom Zeqo, told ATA.

    The figure of Mother Teresa is presented in this exhibition in her complexity. /kei/mt/k

    TIRANA , NOV. 7 (ATA)- Friday's exchange rate of Albanian currency lek versus hard currencies like USD, DM, ITL, SFR was again in favour of these last .

    In the informal market the average exchange rate was $1 = 144,1 lek, gaining 0,60 points compared with yesterday, when it was traded for 143,5 lek. The German currency DM was traded for 84,33 lek, gaining 0,97 points, compared with yesterday 83,36 lek.

    [06] DP STRONGLY CRITICISES FIRST 100 DAYS OF RULING GOVERNMENT

    TIRANA, NOV 7 (ATA) - By A. Simoni: Leader of the Democratic party (DP) Sali Berisha told a news conference on Friday that they have not any concrete signal that the Nano-Milosevic meeting had not been backed by the European Union and the U.S.

    After the Crete summit, the DP leader strongly criticised the Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano for "national betrayal" and "lack of support" from the European and American partners but he did not prove his accusations entering in political deductions.

    He criticised the coalition government for what has done in the first one-hundred days adding that "the only responsible act would have been its withdrawal to pave way to new elections."

    Berisha considered the DP's absence in parliament "party weakness, an act imposed by the attempt against Azem Hajdari" but "it will be considered one day." ake/ak/sh/

    [07] ALBANIA'S MINISTER PRAISES COUNCIL OF EUROPE'S ROLE

    TIRANA, NOV 7 (ATA) - Eva Allushi: Albania's Foreign minister Paskal Milo, who was attending the meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, praised on Friday the important role of the Council in the framework of international efforts on Albania.

    Sources at the Foreign Ministry said that ministers praised the results of the summit held weeks ago.

    Milo held a meeting on November 5 with the OSCE Higher Commissioner for national minorities Max van der Shtoel before the ministerial one which focused especially on the situation in Kosova. ake/kled/ak/sh/

    [08] 21 ALBANIANS OF KOSOVA FACE SERBIAN TRIAL

    PRISHTINE, NOV 7 (ATA) - 21 Albanians accused of terrorism and membership in the Liberation Army of Kosova faced the Serbian trial on Friday with numerous evidence for barbarous tortures.

    Today's defendants Hasan Zeneli, Agim Makolli and Isak Shabani rejected the indictment and their statements written, as they say, under the horrible violence of Serbian investigators. bj/ag/kled/ak/sh/
