  • [01] Albanian singers to sing live in festival

TIRANA, July 17 (ATA) - By Eno Popi: The annual song festival in Albanian radio television will have the biggest surprise this year.

"The singers will forget "play-back" and will sing "live", Gazmend Mullai, one of the main organisers of the song festival said to ATA.

"The experience of last year was promising," Mullai said adding that "this year will not escape 'live interpretation'".

The Albanian public was used to listen to its singers interpret playback in all the festivals since '76. But now everything will change.

"We will try to get rid of the mentality in Albania that there are no conditions to sing "live"," Mullai said.

Times before, the Albanian singers had sung live but immediately after 1976 everything changed. "Play back" was the optimum solution at the time.

The idea to sing "live" in festivals has been considered after 1993 but nothing has been done.

During "Fest '97" the singers Elsa Lila, Aurela Gaçe, Irma Libohova, Redon Makashi, Rovena Dilo, Mira Konçi, proved that singers can sing "live" in Albania. /pas/ak/

[05] Republicans consider primitive DP's way of protests

TIRANA, July 18 (ATA)-By A. Haxhiu, The Republicans consider primitive the way of protests in squares applied by the Democratic Party.

"The way the DP has chosen, after boycotting parliament, to protest in streets and squares, is a primitive policy," the chairman of the Republican party, Fatmir Mediu, told a news conference on Saturday.

"The new elections would not bring about a new political alternative, but they would lead to a political war of negative consequences for the country, instead," said Mediu.

The elections in Albania, according the republican leader, could be held only after a constitution was drafted and approved and the law on elections was improved.

The DP decision to boycott parliament was received with concern also by the international community.

The United States, too, considered DP's decision to quit parliament last week "a step backwards in the consolidation of democratic development of Albania."

DP's decision was considered wrong also by the chief of the German diplomacy, Klaus Kinkel, who, during a visit in Tirana last week, said that "this act of Sali Berisha is something very negative. Reconciliation of the internal political forces remains the main demand of the international community for Albania and in this direction, Sali Berisha's act is wrong." /s.s/lm/

[06] Considerable aid for Kosova refugees in Tropoje

BAJRAM CURRI, July 17 (ATA)-By R. Hoxha, Considerable aid in food and clothes continue to arrive in the Tropoje district for the Kosova refugees who have left their homes due to the Serbian violence and repression.

The aid contingent provided by the Albanian Red Cross, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other donors has helped cope with the emergency situation created in the communes of Tropoje, Llugaj, Margegaj, Bujan and Fierze and in the commune of Bajram Curri as a result of the inflow of 10 000 inhabitants from Kosova.

Over 70 per cent of this aid has been so far distributed to the Kosovars and the families sheltering them.

However, abuses have been noticed with the distribution of the aid as, according to the head of the Tropoje district, Xhevdet Hoxha, there is no state structure to deal with the aid administration.

He said that in order to solve this issue they are cooperating with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and signed with them an act- agreement, according to which UNHCR and the Albanian Red Cross undertake to supply the Kosova refugees with aid and cover their storing and distribution expenditures. /s.s/das/lm/
