  • [01] SOROS financed 13 local projects

    KORCE, Jan 3 (ATA) - By B. Fejzullai: SOROS Foundation financed 13 projects during 1998 in Korca city.

    Frederik Mico, head of the district Council, said to ATA that the AEDP project of the SOROS Foundation had allocated $500 thousand for 13 projects.

    These projects included students' education, relations between school and community and reconstruction of school buildings.

    "Naum Veqiharxhi", "Demokracia" schools and that for mentally disabled were reconstructed during '98.

    SOROS Foundation has also allocated a fund worth $1.6 million to construct new schools and reconstruct existing ones until 2003. /s.sh/ak/

    [02] Thousand Albanian emigrants return to Greece

    KAKAVIJE, Jan 3 (ATA) - By H. Cani: Over 6 thousand Albanian emigrants returned to Greece on Sunday after passing the Christmas and New Year holidays in Albania.

    A police official in Kakavija border crossing said that the number of emigrants returning to Greece would increase in next days. The number of those who came to Albania to celebrate holidays has reached its peak in the last years.

    They are not only people from the southern districts of Albania but also from Tirana, Shkodra, Durres, Elbasan and others.

    Police sources said that until December 30 at least 40 thousand emigrants crossed the Kakavija border point to celebrate the holidays with their relatives. This influx is due to the favourable political climate in Albania and tendency for a stable situation. /pas/ak/

    [03] Incidents in Albanian-Yugoslav border

    TIRANA, Jan 2 (ATA) - Two incidents have been recorded in the Albanian-Yugoslav border on Thursday and Friday when the forces deployed at the Yugoslav post of Morina Pass fired 13 artillery rockets at the Albanian territory.

    A spokesman of the Ministry of Public Order said that 11 rockets were fired some 200 metres inland the Albanian territory at 17.30 p.m. on Thursday.

    They fired two other rockets at 01.30 a.m. on Friday 2 km inland the Albanian territory.

    The same sources said that there were no reports on casualties and damages. /s.sh/ak/

    [04] Highest number of males enrolled, more females graduated schools

    TIRANA, Jan 2 (ATA) - By E. Nepravishta: The latest census showed that males recorded the highest number of persons enrolled in schools.

    The Institute of Statistics, INSTAT, reported that 1.3 million men or 40 percent of the population had been enrolled in different schools in Albania while the number of young women is 1.1 million or 34 percent.

    In the eighth year and secondary schools the number of males was higher than that of females, while in higher schools females recorded a higher number than males. Even the number of females graduating the faculties was higher than the males.

    INSTAT reported that the number of male students who finished secondary schools in '97 was 7.054, while that of the female students was 8.838. Male students graduating faculties during '97 were 1.817, while females were 2.028. /pas/ak/

    [05] New outpatient pediatric clinic inaugurated in Durres - President Meidani attends inauguration ceremony -

    DURRES, Jan.3 (ata) - By S Gjordeni: The new year in Durres started with the inauguration of a new out patient clinic for children.

    Attending the ceremony held on this occasion was also the President of Albania, Rexhep Meidani.

    The construction of the new out-patient clinic in the city of Durres was funded by the Lions' Club in Italy.

    The president of the councils of governors of that Club, Carlo Cezeli voiced the readiness to assist not only "the nice coastal city of Durres, but also other districts of friendly Albania."

    President Meidani thanked the representatives of the Lions' Club for the finance of the new clinic and for their aid in the past few years also in other districts of Albania.

    The new clinic is furnished with modern equipment. It has 50 rooms and other wards for medical treatment, laboratory etc.

    The Lions' Club has made a great contribution to the medical sector in the district of Durres, said to ATA the chairman of the branch of that Club in Durres, Arben Haxhihyseni. According to him, groups of Italian doctors, members of that powerful club, have come time and again in Durres to make medical check ups in the city and countryside and have distributed medicaments free of charge. Also doctors from Durres have had specializations in Italy with the mediation of the Lions' Club. /s.s./xh/

    [06] Pavilion of iconography to be set up in Museum of National History

    TIRANE, Jan.2 (ata) - The pavilion of iconography to be established in the Museum of National History in Tirane will create the possibility for universal values of iconography to become known for a greater number of domestic and foreign visitors than until now, sources from the department of cultural heritage in the Albanian Ministry of Culture told ATA.

    The project of the pavilion is ideated by the Department of Cultural Heritage and adopted by the Ministry of Culture in 1998. Its inauguration will take place in May, 1999.

    Partners in the realisation of this project are the Institute of the Monuments of Culture and the Museum of National History.

    There are about 60 icons exhibited in the museum of National History in the Albanian capital while others are displayed in the Figurative Arts Gallery also in Tirane, in the Museum of Mediaeval Art in Korce and in the Museum Onufri in Berat.

    Albania is the richest country in the Balkans for this sort of cultural heritage but the fund of iconography has been displayed very little and mostly in the cities which are are far from tourist zones.

    The new pavilion of iconography in the Museum of National History will exhibit the best creative works held in the Institute of the Monuments of Culture and in its affiliates in other districts. /pas/xh/

    [07] 7.2 per cent of unemployed people in Durres

    DURRES, Jan.3 (ata) - By S Gjordeni: At the end of 1998, the number of the unemployed in the city of Durres fell to 7.2 per cent, the lowest so far, the chief of the Office of Labour in the town-hall, Lumturi Njala, told ATA.

    While in 1993, there were 26 000 unemployed in Durres, at the end of 1998 this figure fell to 8 700 people.

    There are nearly 30 000 people working in the private sector, and 18 000 others working in the state sector. 260 people or 2.5 per cent more than the last year were employed every month in the past year.

    The implementation of 15 projects of public works has also have its impact in the lower figures of unemployment with about 3000 people employed in them, the establishment of many new productive and trading activities and the extension of production lines, thus creating new jobs, such as the Filanto enterprise, the ready made garments enterprise, etc. /s.s./xh/

    [08] Calm situation in Tirane in the first days of 1999

    TIRANE, Jan.3 (ata) - By Th Thanasi: The measures adopted by the police of Tirane, the nonstop police service in all the structures in Tirane and its outskirts during the celebration of the New Year ensured normal conditions during all the holidays for the traditional New Year celebration.

    The two first days of 1999 were calm for the capital and this situation is prevailing also on Sunday, the spokesman of Police Department of the Prefecture of Tirane said to ATA today.

    In the past 50 hours no incident have been registered. The police commissariats have had reports only for the five injured people in the first hours of 1999 as a result of the fireworks.

    According to the spokesman, the police of the capital have been serving also in the traffic thus ensuring the normal activities of the day. On Sunday in particular everything started its common course with many trade units and bars resuming their services for the citizens. /y.pa/xh/

    [09] Two thieves arrested in Berat

    BERAT, Jan.3 (ata) - By Ilir Manka: The Berat district court held Sunday the arrest on the spot of Kamber Braho,21, from Kucova and Shkelqim Kana, 18, from Ura Vajgurore. The two were detained by police forces of the district because, under the threat of arms, they had stolen things from the passengers travelling on the Berat-Lumas bus line. In addition, they had plundered other passengers on two other vans passing on the same road.

    Braho and Kana accepted before the jury the acts they had made and as material proofs for their theft were a pistol TT, a knife and 347 thousand lek taken from the passengers. The two thieves also said that after the theft, they planned to go to Greece. /s.s./xh/
