  • [01] Greek PM due to Tirane on August 24

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA) By E.Metaj: - Greek Prime Minister is expected to visit Tirane on August 24, spokesman of the Ministry of Finance told ATA on Thursday.

    According to him, on this occasion Albanian Minister of Finances, Anastas Angjeli paid a visit in Greece during the last days, where he met the Greek Foreign Minister, Jorgos Papandreu.

    Talks between the Albanian Minister and his Greek counterpart were focused on regional cooperation especially in economics, where the examination of financial progress of US $ 80 million and the Greek support of $ 1.8 million to the Albanian budget were of great importance.

    The aid that Greece will accord to Albania in constructing the new National Theater in Tirane occupied a special place during the discussion. Ministers held talks as well on the status of the Albanian emigrants in Greece. /so/A.A/

    [04] AEC office on flames

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA) - By A.Thanasi: The information office of Albanian Energetic Cooperation (AEC), situated in Bajram Curri road, Tirane, was engulfed by fire, spokesman of Tirane police directory, told ATA on Thursday.

    According to him, the fire burned three computers, a phone apparatus and other equipment in the office.

    Based on the preliminary data of the investigation group, the unexpected fire is caused by high tension in all the area around this office.

    The high tension caused damages even in the home equipment of of 32- nd quarter, added the spokesman. /lh/A.A/

    [05] Changes in Tirane Prefecture police directory under way

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA) - By Th.Thanasi: In the context of the changes of chiefs of different sectors in the Directory of Tirane prefecture, the newly-appointed chief of visas-passports office, Captain Sokol Peza, started work on Thursday, spokesman of this prefecture told ATA on Thursday.

    Peza has worked in the Ministry of Public Order, and replaced the chief of this sector, Major Agim Myrtaj, nominated to the post of anti- terror inspector of this district.

    During the two last days in the directory of Tirane directory are reshuffled the chiefs of crime, order and anti-drugs. /lh/A.A/

    [06] CARE rehabilitates Spitalle camp

    DURRES, August 19 (ATA) - By S.Gjordeni: After the closing of Spitalle makeshift camp, where were sheltered thousands of expelled Kosovars during the crisis in Kosove, the international non governmental organization, "CARE", which had under patronage this camp, has started its rehabilitation, Gerard Fayox, chief of UNHCR office in Durres, told ATA on Thursday.

    He reported that the water pomps and some other objects of the above mentioned camp, thought to be used by the peasants of neighbouring countries, are repaired.

    On the bases of a program for rehabilitation of this camp, UNHCR accorded to CARE organization a fund worth $ 5 000. It will be used for the adjustment and transformation of some equipment for the aqueduct of Manze village, Fayox explained. /A.A/

    [07] Italian group "Pooh" to stage a live show in Tirane soon

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA) By Ornela Kadaifçiu:- The organisation of September great show of "Pooh" (distinguished Italian group) is underway, sources from Albanian Ministry of Culture told ATA on Wednesday.

    The organization was initiated by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Italian Institution of Culture.

    This activity will be accompanied by the inaguration of a children's park in the Capital which is expected to be founded within a few days, present of Italian donors.

    The concert of "Pooh" will be organised in continuation of several other activities organised by the Ministry of Culture such as the great show of the Swiss singer DJ Bobo, or the concert of the popular Italian singer Zucchero, expected to be organised during the last days of August. /lh/SO/A.A/

    [08] Work volume in Berati custom lifts more than 13%

    Berat, August 19 (ata) - By Ilir Manka - The work volume during the seven months period in Berati custom office increased more than 13%, told ATA on Thursday the Head of the Custom Ismail Toska.

    According to him this level is one of the best marked in 24 last months, but there is enough work to be done to fulfill the foreseen figures.

    Some 76 clearances are performed every month in this custom. Custom officers made evident that the goods prices were lower than before and to 28 cases the rules of the new custom code are followed. This year is the first time that this custom collected the fuel's excise. /lh/linda/

    [09] Facilities for businessmen to import technology of more than $100, 000

    Tirana, August 19 (ata) - By D.Koca - Albanian Minister of Economic Cooperation and Trade drafted a list with the suggestions on custom facilities concerning the import technology that come in Albania.

    After the discussions with the Commercial Chambers, representatives of the state institutions and representatives of businessmen associations, the Ministry reached to the conclusion that the import technology marking a value more than 100 thousand dollars, which are using in export production, but even in tourism to be expelled from the custom taxes.

    So, in order to stimulate the commerce and the entrance in Albania of the qualitative goods from import, Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Trade propose the import technologies and the materials not produced home, to be expelled from the custom duties. /a.gj/linda/

    [10] Some $87 000 to improve Durresi infrastructure

    Durres, August (ata) - By S.Gjordeni - $87 000 will be used on the rehabilitation of the pavement of "Taulantia" boulevard, along the coast in Durres and on the rehabilitation of the segment of the national road in Rrashbulli hill, told ATA the head of UNHCR office in Durresi Prefecture, Gerald Fayoux.

    According to him the fulfillment of these objectives is a cooperation between UNHCR and the non governmental organization ANP (Assistance of Norwegian People).

    The total value accorded for the reconstruction of the pavement along the coast is some 39 thousand dollars, while the value put in disposal for the rehabilitation of the segment of national road in Rrushbulli hill is nearly 48 thousand dollars.

    Both these projects will be implemented within a month. /lh/linda/

    [11] KLA meets terms of demilitarisation agreement

    PRISHTINE, August 19 (ATA)-The KLA has so far completely met the terms of the demilitarisation agreement signed by Hashim Thaci, KLA Commander General, and General Mike Jackson, KFOR commander, Fatmir Limaj, Deputy Minister of Defence, and Agim Ceku, Chief of the KLA General Staff told a news briefing today.

    Today was the deadline of surrendering light automatic weapons, which make up 66% of the weapons turned in by KLA, ATA sources from Kosova reported today. /lh/lm/

    [12] Works on Tirana ring-road

    Tirana, August 19 (ata) - By M.Pupa - Albanian Prime Minister inaugurated today the restart of the operations in the new ring-road, 2.2 km long.

    Referring to the General Urbanization Study, this new ring-road will connect two entrance roads to Tirana town, Durresi street and Kavaja street. This ring-road is foreseen to smooth considerably the circulation of the vehicles in the town. This ring-road starts 500 m way from Lapraka cross-road and ends in Kavaja street.

    The value planned for 1999 is some 100 million leks, and it is at the same time the greatest investment performed by the state budget for the General Road Directorate.

    The work, to be performed by "Gjoka" company, is foreseen to be implemented within four months period. /lh/linda/

    [13] $ 250 000 in reconstruction of Gjirokastra boulevard

    Gjirokastra, August 19 (ata) - By Hysni Cani - Some 250 thousand dollars is the fund put in disposal for the reconstruction of main boulevard of Gjirokastra town by the European Union, through PHARE Program and Cross Border, told ATA on Thursday the Mayor of Gjirokastra municipality Ylli Asllani.

    He said that based upon a drafted project, the current boulevard will be transformed in a one with two paths, 7 m each and pavements 3.5 m on both sides. The project includes the reconstruction of the existent road 1.3 km till the crossroad of national road Gjirokaster-Kakavije.

    But the beginning of the construction process is still far away. According to Mr. Asllani, obstacles in the beginning of the operations are the illegal construction on both sides of the road, and only their destruction will open the green light to the operation in this object. /lh/linda/

    [14] Police seize contraband oil tanker

    VLORE, August 19(ATA)-By H.Koci, The Vlore police forces on Wednesday evening intercepted a contraband oil tanker at the site called Porti i Ri (New Port), the spokesman of police department, Petraq Dhroso, told ATA on Thursday.

    He said that the oil had been unloaded by the ship "Erlinda", which belongs to citizens from Vlore Astrit Bajrami and Ilmi Hasani.

    Afterwards, the two owners of the tanker and the two policemen on duty at this port were detained. /dast/lm/

    [15] Rehabilitation of Tirana Artificial Lake's dyke and "Ali Demi" road

    -Prime Minister inaugurated their beginning

    Tirana, August 19 (ata) - By M.Pupa - Albanian Prime Minister Pandeli Majko inaugurated today the starting of the rehabilitation process of the dyke of Tirana Artificial Lake.

    The rehabilitation will be made possible through a fund of some 1 million dollars.

    According to the specialists, the quick repair of the lake's dyke is a necessity, because the ground slip might cause floods. Referring to them again the ground slides occurred several times and partial repairs are implemented three years ago.

    The capacity of Artificial Lake is 2.450 thousand m3, but at the moment it is reduced four times. Ground slip had its effects.

    Prime Minister Pandeli Majko attended also the inauguration ceremony of works in "Ali Demi" road, which will be implemented through a fund of some 357.100 dollars.

    The fund accorded for these two investments in the infrastructure of the capital town is part of the grant of some 5 million dollars that the Government of Pakistan accorded to six municipalities in Albania, to intervene in infrastructure. /dast/linda/

    [16] Invitation of all investitures interested to buy AMC share-certifications

    Tirana, August 19 (ata) - By Elton Metaj - Albanian Ministry of Public Economy and Privatization passed the beginning of the procedures of selling "Albanian Mobile Communication" (AMC) share-certifications, by inviting all the investitures interested to buy the shares of this association, told ATA the spokesman of this Ministry.

    Serving to this purpose the main newspapers of the country and the well-known ones, such as, "Financial Times" and "Wall Street Journal" will publish the invitations of the privatization ministry on buying of the common shares of the only Albanian mobile's association.

    The current capital of AMC shares is some 813.821.915 leks, totally signed and paid, represented by 813.822 common shares, each of them marking 1 thousand leks.

    Based upon the law "On AMC privatization", not less than 51%, but no more than 85% of the capital of the association (415.049 to 691.749 common shares) is offered to the strategic investitures, which are qualified associations that performed their activities in telecommunication.

    AMC privatization opens the way to the privatization of the association of strategic sectors of Albanian economy. /dast/linda/

    [17] Majko welcomes project to extend Albanian Albtelecom to Kosova

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA)-By E. Nepravishta, Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, at a meeting with the Albanian Albtelecom Supervising Council today, considered the project for the extensioni of Albtelecom to Kosova a very significant step made in the right direction, sources from the Prime Minister's office told ATA on Thursday.

    "This idea goes on the same line with the strategy of building strong relations of cooperation between two of the Albanian factors in the Balkans, " said Majko.

    Majko expressed his personal and his government's support for the realisation of this idea.

    "The Albanian government has expressed that its strategy embodies the concept that wherever there are Albanians, there are sufficient spaces for cooperation.

    "The Albanian government, also in the context of the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe and creation of a new economic space in the Balkans, is encouraging the realisation of the objectives as regards relations in education, infrastructure and telephone network with Prishtine," he said. /dast/lm/

    [18] Tirana stocks market: Some 4.3 bln leks bonus are sold

    Tirana, August 19 (ata) - By E.Metaj - Some 4,3 bln leks bonus of different maturity, issued by the Albanian Government, are sold in the last auction organized by the Albanian Bank, while different investitures asked for 4,8 bln leks bonus, report ATA sources from Tirana stock market.

    According to these sources, the total sum offered for bonus of three months maturity was 1,2 bln leks, while the investitures asked to buy 0,933 bln leks. The maximal interest marks 17,4% and the minimal interest some 16, 9%. The nominal value of the issued bonus was 0,843 bln lek.

    The total sum offered for bonus of six months maturity was 1,2 bln leks, while the investitures asked to buy 1,31 bln leks. The maximal interest marks 18,5% and the minimal interest some 17,9%. The nominal value of the issued bonus was 1,091 bln leks.

    The total sum offered for bonus of twelve months maturity was 2,4 bln leks, while the investitures asked to buy 2,53 bln leks. The maximal interest marks 19% and the minimal interest some 18,9%. The nominal value of the issued bonus was 2,4 bln leks

    The main buyers of this bonus auction were banks of second levels. /dast/linda/

    [19] World Bank provides US$2 million for Vlore hospital

    VLORE, August 19 (ATA)-By H. Koci, The World Bank (WB) has provided US$ 2 million for the complete reconstruction of the Vlore district hospital, the director of this hospital, Marika Cakerri, told ATA on Thursday.

    Of this fund, US$ 500 000 will serve for the complete reconstruction of the building. The works will begin in the coming days and will be carried out by a Turkish company and the Vlore company "Riviera".

    In Vlore district this year, through a fund of US$ 500 000, a new contemporary hospital of infectious diseases was built, the city's polyclinic was completely reconstructed and work is going on for the reconstruction of the neur.-psychiatric hospital. /dast/lm/

    [20] Police sequester speedboat with illegal emigrants in Otranto

    DURRES, August 19 (ATA)-By G. Kabashi, The Italian-Albanian crew of Guardia di Finanza's speedboats last night turned back a speedboat with 20 illegal emigrants on board, which was attempting to flee accross the Adriatic to Italian shores, sources from Guardia di Finanza told ATA on Thursday.

    According to the above sources, at around 02.00 another speedboat, which had set sail towards Italian shores, was intercepted.

    The speedboat, 13 meters long and with 3 motors with a general power of 750 hp, had managed to escape the military ships and the operative hall of Guardia di Finanza in Durres announced the police authorities of the Italian shore.

    One hour later this boat, whose travel had become difficult due to heavy sea, was blocked by the sea and land forces of Guarda di Finanza.

    On board the boat were eight children, four women and four men, two of whom are thought to be the skippers. /dast/lm/

    [21] Around 200 Shkoder families to emigrate to U.S.

    SHKODER, August 19 (ATA)-By M. Malja, This year 200 families from the Shkoder city have won the lotto to emigrate to the U.S., sources from the distrcit post department told ATA on Thursday.

    Also last year, some 140 citizens from this district won this lotto, while since the beginning of this lottery in 1994 some 840 Shkoder families have emigrated to the U.S.. /s.s/lm/

    [22] Italian Government finances Albanian culture

    TIRANE, August 19 (ATA)-By O. Kadaifciu, For the 1999-2000, the Ministry of Culture has profited a fund of 3 billion lire, grant from Italian government, sources from this ministry reported on Thursday.

    "The fund provided will be invested according to the projects of intervention in cultural infrastructure envisaged to be executed for 1999- 2000".

    The first project includes local cultural assets and is worth 600 million lire.

    "Mother Teresa" square will also be financed by this fund of the Italian government. It envisages removal of the buildings currently surrounding the square as well as of the fountain, considering the organisation of various cultural and artistic events.

    This fund will also address the project of the Institute of Cultural Monuments.

    Meanwhile, this fund also envisages the construction of an annex to the National Gallery and the construction of a new compound of the National Theater in Tirane. /f.n/lm/
