    Session of the Government which was chaired in the first part by President Emil Constantinescu was devoted to the examination of the government project of economic strategy on medium term. After the session both the President of Romania and the Prime Minister made statements to the press which were broadcast live by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu said that expenditure is cut down beginning with the Government: the ministries will follow suit. President Emil Constantinescu said the budget for the current year will be debated by all parties in the coalition and in the opposition. He underlined that the initiative of working out a strategy for a medium term of development was not imposed by the European Union and that for the success of the project we need to be united towards the same goal. Romania must present to the European Union the image of a country which knows exactly what it wants and which does not waste resources. RADOR

    [02] Minister of Finance presented the budget for the current year

    RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes said the consolidated budget is worked out starting from the premise that inflation is 27 per cent this year and that one USD is equal to 20500 lei. Total value is 725 thousand billion lei. RADOR

    [03] Rezolutions of the Government

    The second part of the session on Thursday of the Cabinet of Romania was devoted to the setting up of the Committee for National Strategy of economic development. The Committee is led by two chairmen who are Prime Minister Isarescu and Academician Tudorel Postolache. The Commitee concludes activity on 15 May this year with a presentation of the national strategy of eeconomic development. A second rezolution sanctions the setting up of the Interdepartmental group for speeding up necessary measures with a view to ensuring a regime of free circulation to the Romanian citizens in the European Union countries. A third rezolution deals with the creation of the National Agency of public servants. RADOR

    [04] Romanian visit of the United States under-secretary of State Pickering

    United States Under-Secretary of State for political affairs Thomas Pickering met at the residence of the United States Ambassador to Romania with the leaders of ApR and PDSR, both parties being in the opposition. After the meeting the leader of PDSR Ion Iliescu told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI in an exclusive interview that he had an exchange of views with the United States official regarding the international situation and the pact of stability in the Balkans in which it was stressed that zonal stability is conditioned by national stability in the conditions in which poverty is the most dangerous reality of our days. The isolation of Serbia will not solve the problems of that country. Both Mr. Iliescu and the ApR leader Teodor Melescanu told the guest during their talk that our country is very much interested in accesion to the European Union and to the Euro Atlantic structures.

    Thomas Pickering also met with foreign minister Petre Roman with whom he had a new round of talks regarding strategic partnership between Romania and the United States. During the meeting the two officials launched a new framework-document of Romania and the United States which sanctions the passage to the intensified phase of the Partnership as established in Washington D.C. last week during the talks between US secretary of state Albright and Romanian foreign minister Roman focused on four domains which are economy, regional stability, bilateral military relations and non conventional risks, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.     [05] Press Conference of the Popular Party of Romania

    The President of the Popular Party of Romania, Radu Vasile, said in Brasov on Thursday that his political party was not aimed at working against PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - but it is a new party which is attached to the democratic values of the country and has a powerful social drive. Radu Vasile hopes that this party becomes a real force in the Romanian political arena. In his turn the Executive President of the Party, Sorin Lepsa, said the new party which was set up at Brasov works on the structures of the Party the Romanian Right Wing, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [06] Awards for the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation

    Department Canale Nationale of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation represented by Deputy Director General Paul Grigoriu and Canalul Cultural represented by Ana-Maria Sireteanu were awarded by the Academy of Romania President Eugen Simion for the excellent collaboration between the two institutions and for the promotion of the great national poet of Romania Mihai Eminescu by the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI transmits.
