  • [01] President of Romania Emil Constantinescu has met the President of PNTCD Ion Diaconescu

    Last night the President of Romania met with the President of PNTCD Ion Diaconescu who told media after the meeting that the talk was focused on topical political questions. The leader of the Christian Democratic National Peasants Party said that his party was standing for a mandate that supports the present President of the country on the same ticket with present Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu as future P.M.

    [02] Meeting between the leaders of PNTCD and UFD

    The Palace of the Romanian Parliament has hosted the meeting of the leaders of PNTCD and UFD which is the Union of Right Wing Forces in an attempt to start a possible preelectoral coalition.

    UFD leader Varujan Vosganian said that there is a possibility for PNTCD, UFD, the CIVIL ALLIANCE and the National Liberal Party to form a coalition although PNL - the National Liberal Party- has not yet made clear its intentions. In his turn the vice president of PNTCD Ioan Muresan said that practically there is collaboration between his party and UFD, a programme in this sense being in the making based on the main theses of each of the two parties and which should be put under the sign of European integration.

    [03] Session of the joint chambers of the Romanian Parliament

    In the last meeting of the present Parliamentary session the MPies have adopted several reports of the Commissions of mediation among which the draft law enabling the Cabinet of Romania give ordinances during the Parliamentary recess. Also passed was ordinance regarding the ratification of the ordinance on the contract of financing TAROM SA by BERD and the nuclear power programme of this country.

    [04] Speech of the Chairman of the Senate Mircea Ionescu Quintus

    The Chairman of the Senate appreciated during a speech delivered before the joint chambers of the Romanian Parliament that during the eighths session which comes to an end a number of reforms at home and a number of laws and bills for the harmonization of the Romanian legislature with European norms were adopted. Also passed were bills and laws in keeping with European legislation for transports, labor and social protection, justice, health and foreign policy. After mentioning some difficulties in the process of collaboration between the Cabinet and the Parliament Mr. Ionescu Quintus said all political parties of the Parliament of Romania showed the same will to comply with the foreign policy demands of the moment on issues of adherence to the European Union. The Standing Bureaus of the Chambers did a good job, estimated the Chairman of the Romanian Senate. The National Liberal Party did not pass any decision on the achievement of an alliance with a view to general elections

    PNL recalls that no decision was adopted yet on any alliance for the future general elections in Romania. In a communique from the press bureau of the party it is shown that PNL will make a final decision on this issue at the National Council which takes place on 14 - 15 July. The liberals are standing for a larger center-right wing coalition which should include PNTCD, PD, ApR and PNL. Other possibilities are not excluded either such as participation on the lists of the party, an alliance which is restructed on liberal principles and alliance with ApR - Alliance with Romania party. The communique of PNL mentions that all these are only working alternatives.

    [05] Communique of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - regarding letter of Costea to leader of the party Iliescu

    PDSR is of the opinion that the letter sent by Adrian Costea, businessman of France, to Ion Iliescu, President of PDSR is nothing else but another piece in the puzzle aimed at slandering the party and its leader. The money claimed by Costea to the leadership of the main opposition partyof the country was in fact spent by the former when the political party ApR was formed and when various and different foundations were created.

    [06] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu participated in the Salzburg central and eastern European summit

    Debates of the Salzburg summit were focused on two questions which had to be answered by the representatives of the countries that are candidates to membership of the European Union. The answers of the Romanian Prime Minister concentrated on priorities of Romanian foreign policy and namely regaining credibility while the assistance given by European Union member states is very important for Romania. Prime Minister of Romania had talks with the coordinator of the Pact of Stability in the Balkans Bodo Hombach with whom he discussed issues which imply Romania in the pact of stability as well as aspects of bilateral relations with Germany. Mr. Isarescu also met with the European commissioner for enlargement Gunther Verheugen who launched an appeal to the political forces of Romania to contribute to the political and economic stability in this country and then encouraged the Romanian Prime Minister to further the programme of reform.

    [07] Debate organized on the occasion of the Romanian visit of the special counselor of NATO Secretary General for Central and Eastern Europe Chris Donnelly

    The Romanian Institute for International Strategic Studies organized a debate on the occasion of the visit to Romania of Mr. Donnelly during which the participants spoke about the RELATIONS OF ROMANIA WITH NATO AND THE FUTURE OF THE ALLIANCE IN THE NEW SECURITY CLIMATE. It was stressed that the adherence of Romania to NATO is not the end of a process but rather the beginning of one said during the debates Mr. Connelly.

    [08] Contract of financial consulting for the privatization of SIDEX Galati

    The Fund of State Property and the Falstone Private Capital Group as well as Deloyte and Touch signed on Thursday the contract of financing consultancy for the privatization of the steel and rolled goods combinat works SIDEX of the town of Galati. The contract is valid for 29 weeks during which the privatization plan has to be worded for the cabinet in order to be approved.

    [09] National Bank of Romania asked the Bucharest Court to start procedures to declare BANCA INTERNATIONALA A RELIGIILOR - International Bank of Religions - bankrupt

    The Fund of Guaranteeing Deposits of the Banking Systems of Romania will compensate people that have deposited money with the International Bank of Religions with money up to the sum of close to 64 million lei from the moment a decision is final reading that the International Bank of Religions is declared bankrupt. The ceiling is dependent on inflation.

    [10] Bucharest - a conference on the use of Internet for financial operations

    I - Finances Romania took place at the World Trade Center of Bucharest being organized by the PIATA FINANCIARA - Financial Market. It was naturally focused on the use of the Internet for doing business, on the use of magnetic cards and other modern tools of business and finance operations. Participating were the main financial and banking companies such as ABN AMRO BANK, ALFA BANK, ARTHUR ANDERSEN, BANC POST, BCR, BRD, BANK OF AUSTRIA.

    [11] Banca Populara Romana intends to turn into commercial bank

    BANCA POPULARA ROMANA has the intention to turn into a commercial bank which does not present any risk for the activity of the Bank nor for its clients. In this case its whole activity will be regulated by the National Bank of Romania which controls and supervises its entire activity. It is in this way that a guarantee for all deposit, within the limits established by the National Bank of Romania, is also established.

    The Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu is in Salzburg for the Economic Forum of Central Europe, a meeting which ends today. Mr. Isarescu leaves Salzburg today after a number of meetings and talks with the participants and after a reception by the President of Austria, Thomas Klestil.

    A Romanian parliamentary delegation led by Mariana Stoica, chairperson of the Commission of European integration of the Romanian parliament is in Russe for a meeting of the European integration commissions of Romania and Bulgaria.

    Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman is attending the 11-th edition of the Crans Montana Forum in Switzerland.
