    President Emil Constantinescu said his decision to stay out of presidential race this fall is irrevocable

    The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu said again on Tuesday that his decision to stay out of the presidential race in the fall in Romania is irrevocable adding that this should have been understood the moment he made his decision public. " I have never felt the need to strengthen my word nor did I say that it was my word of honor. A man of honor has but one decision to make public when he makes it public and he never goes back on his word , " said the president of Romania quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    President Emil Constantinescu chaired the special Cabinet session

    At the end of the special cabinet session yesterday both the president of Romania and the prime minister of the Romanian government made statements to the press according to which the president of this country had asked the PM to dismiss all those responsible of wrongly administering the sums alotted by international financial institutions for the implementation of various projects. At the end of the mandate the Isarescu Cabinet will present a clear situation of the treasury management. The president also said pensions will be raised starting First September so that the lowest pension will be of one million lei.

    PM Isarescu said that despite the fact this year was an election year the economy of this country registers good results, the increases being even bigger than those forecast. In as far as the home debts are concerned the situation is not bad either as their level is of 34 per cent of the Domestic Gross Product which is in keeping with the Maastricht Treaty.

    PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - is of the opinion that statement of President Constantinescu is honorable if irrevocable

    First vicepresident of PDSR - SOCIAL DEMOCRACY PARTY OF ROMANIA - Adrian Nastase said that the decision of the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, to stay away from the presidential race in the fall was honorable if it was irrevocable. PDSR would also analyze the statement of President Emil Constantinescu to see if it was not meant to distract attention of public opinion from the mistakes made by the encumbent power that is to say the coalition in power. If Mr. Constantinescu goes back on his word then the credibility of Romania in the foreign arena is seriously affected declared Adrian Nastase, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    Meeting of the national coordinators, chairmen and co-chairmen of the working groups of the Pact of Stability

    Bodo Homach, coordinator of the Pact of Stability has gathered in Brussels a meeting of the coordinators, chairmen and co-chairmen of the working groups of the Pact of Stability meant to reach concrete and practical conclusions with a view to current initiatives and practices for strengthening cooperation inside the Pact of Stability. Working table One which deals with Human Rights has Romania as co-chairman this semester reads a letter by fax sent by Ministry of Foreign Affairs to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI which actually quotes it. <P ALIGN=JUSTIFY> Romania has a programme of regional development of the European Union

    The delegation of the European Commission to Romania and the National Agency for Regional Development anounced in a press conference on 18 July the official launching of the regional programme of development of the European Union having a total budget of 8.3 million EURO. The targets are the financing of the development of the private sector, improvement of the local tourist sector and the development of human resources. Simon Mordue who is the coordinator of these programmes for Romania announced that 267 projects were selected for further financing alongside the creation of 7000 job opportunities; he added the volume of non refundable assistance for Romania this year from the European Union is of 650 million EURO while the level of using the funds channelled to this country is of 90 - 97.7 per cent.

    TAROM is a member of the European Association of Air Transport Companies

    The Romanian Air Transport Company - TAROM - which is a national company has become the 28-th member of the European Association of Air Transport Companies, reads a press communique of the organization which was broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The secretary general of the European Association Karl-Heinz Neumeister appreciated this action and added that it represented an expansion of the geographical area of the members of the organization. The Association also includes some of the largest European air companies among which British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France.

    WALL STREET JOURNAL EUROPE is of the opinion that BERD is interested in purchasing stock from BANCA AGRICOLA

    European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, according to Romanian official sources quoted by WALL STREET JOURNAL, will purchase stock of Banca Agricola. This bank has to be privatized very fast so that by the end of September the process is concluded. BERD could become a member of a consortium which negociates for a share of the stock after the consortium is the owner of the bank. The consortium is made up of Greek Agricultural Bank, Romanian - American Enterprise Fund and Rabo International Financial Advisers. Both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank declared that the privatization or closing down of this bank is one of the conditions of furthering financial assistance to Romania.

    In the interval 19 - 23 July President Emil Constantinescu will pay a state visit to Mexico after which he visits Brazil; the President is accompanied by officials and a large delegation of Romanian businessmen.

    Debates of the Committee for industry and services of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania.

    The President of PDSR, Ion Iliescu, alongside the first vicepresident of that party Adrian Nastase are attending at Ploiesti the meeting of the presidents and vicepresidents of the administrative county councils members of PDSR.

    Weekly press conferences of the Alliance for Romania and the National Liberal Party at the seats of the respective parties.

    Press Conference of the Romanian Commercial Bank on the occasion of the Annual Report for 1999 at the central seat of the Romanian Commercial Bank.

    Press Conference of the Medical Insurance House at the seat of this organization in the city of Bucharest.
