    PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party - supports Mugur Isarescu in the presidential race this fall

    he National Leadership Bureau of PNTCD decided to support present Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu in the presidential race in the fall. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports that Ion Diaconescu, President of PNTCD had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister as part of which the latter accepted to run for president with the support of PNTCD. Mr. Diaconescu added for our first information and news channel ": Even if Prime Minister Isarescu does not wish yet to run for president, President Emil Constantinescu was very insistent that he would, so that Mr. Isarescu did not have any other alternative but give an affirmative answer." This week PNTCD meets the Prime Minister to work out details regarding the Isarescu ticket.

    PNTCD and PNL have decided to set up center-right wing pole

    PNTCD and PNL - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party and National Liberal Party - have decided to set up center - right wing pole to counteract access of the left wing parties to power in Romania in the wake of the elections this fall. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI President of PNTCD Ion Diaconescu said that they discussed about supporting Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu in the race for president in the fall; Prime Minister Isarescu will make his position clear after talks with the leaders of PNTCD and PNL. In his turn the first vice president of PNL Valeriu Stoica said after the meeting on Wednesday that the future center right wing political party should have a common programme and be made up of parties that already obtained more than three per cent of the votes at the local elections which took place last June. Mr. Stoica also said that negociations with ApR would continue in the sense that PNL would stand for the creation of a powerful party and not on the ! support of one or another personality. Negociations with ApR will continue as there is the possibility of a second ballot in the autumn parliamentary and presidential elections.

    Prime Minister Isarescu says that he would make a decision soon regarding Presidential elections in the fall in Romania

    The Cabinet of Romania sent RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI a message by fax in which is it written that the Prime Minister is attached to the programme of the Government for European integration and if asked he would consider a new mandate as Prime Minister. With regard to the fact that right wing and center political parties of this country are supporting his candidacy to the position of President of Romania Mr. Isarescu said in an interview to the ROMPRESS press agency which is mirrored in the message by fax mentioned earlier that he was honored by the proposal and that when he made a decision he would announce that decision himself.

    _The decision of President Emil Constantinescu to stay away from the presidential race does not influence the strategy of the Social Democracy Party of Romania - PDSR _

    At a press conference in the town of Ploiesti the President of PDSR Ion Iliescu said that the decision of the present President of the country Emil Constantinescu to stay away from the presidential race in the fall does not influence in the least the strategy of his party for the parliamentary and presidential elections in Romania. Then Ion Iliescu was asked if he was concerned by then candidacy of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu to the position of President of Romania to which he answered the following: " if your are afraid of the wolf you do not get into the forest ". The first vice-president of PDSR Adrian Nastase referred to the recent attacks of PNL's Valeriu Stoica against the President of PDSR Ion Iliescu and said that these attacks could make PDSR analyze again the opportunity to have talks with PNL for a future collaboration.

    PNL's Decebal Traian Remes will continue his work as Finance Minister

    Following talks with the leadership of PNL and Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu who actually did not approve the resignation of his Finance Minister, Mr. Remes will continue work as Finance Minister and member of the leadership of the Romanian National Liberal Party.

    Agency of Administration of money funds of the SAPARD programme for agriculture

    Romanian Ministry of Finances initiated a draft for emergency ordinance with a view to creating the agency of administering funds of the SAPARD programme for agriculture. The Agency will have to start work very soon so that in the fall the small farms could get loans for investments in the Romanian agriculture. This year the European Union gives Romania 150 million EURO as part of the SAPARD programme and by the end of the programme in 2006 there will be 600 million EURO.

    Visit of President Emil Constantinescu to Mexico and Brasil

    The President of Romania is now on a visit to Mexico and Brasil. The President has said that these visits are part of the strategy already planned in 1997 which reads that this year, the last of Constantinescu's presidency of Romania, are devoted to relaunching relations with countries of Latin and South America. The two visits of the President of Romania have several component parts and namely political and diplomatic, economic and cultural components. A number of accords will be signed to serve as a basis for the developmente of relations with the countries visited all the more so as Romania has already started negociations with the European Union and is a pillar of stability in South Eastern Europe said president Constantinescu before leaving Romania for visits to Mexico and Brasil.

    The Czech minister of national defense has promised full support to our country for accession to NATO

    The Czech minister of defense Vladimir Vetchy promised he would fully support the efforts of Romania for NATO accession as part of the OPEN DOORS POLICY. The Czech defense minister also said that Prague was interested in cooperation in weaponry production while the Czech defense ministry would keep the Romanian defense ministry informed of the experience obtained following NATO accession.

    ORA ARMATEI celebrates 60 years

    The popular radio programme ORA ARMATEI celebrated 60 years of regular weekly broadcast of the programme for armymen ORA ARMATEI. Present at the festivity here in the Broadcasting House of RADIO ROMANIA the Romanian minister of national defense Sorin Frunzaverde said that along the years the radio programme ORA ARMATEI had been a very important component part of the Romanian army. The festivity took place at the press center of RADIO ROMANIA and was attended by the Executive Director General of Radio Romania, Dragos Seuleanu, Deputy Director General Gheorghe Verman, Editor in chief of ORA ARMATEI, Vasile Preda and a numerous public. Diplomas were given from the National Defense Ministry by Sorin Frunzaverde and on behalf of President Director General Andrei Dimitriu from RADIO ROMANIA.

    The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, continues visit to Mexico.

    Prime Minister of Romania Mugur Isarescu pays a visit to the town of Iasi where he receives the medal MOLDOVIAN CROSS and has talks with university professors and with local political leaders.

    Romanian home minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu is making a visit to France.

    In Bucharest state secretary Mihai Razvan Ungureanu opens the meeting of the coordinators of the groups of action of the Working Table Number One - Democracy and Human Rights - as part of the Pact of Stability for South Eastern Europe; after the opening by Mr. Ungureanu an address is delivered by Dr. Panagiotis Roumeliotis, deputy chief coordinator.

    Press conference of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - at the seat of the party at 13:00

    PNTCD and ANCD are having a meeting; they are the ruling Christian Democratic National Peasants Party and the Christian Democratic National Alliance.

    National Liberal Party has a meeting and negocitions with Alliance for Romania Party.

    Holiday of the Romanian Air Forces which is celebrated each and every year on the occasion of the Holiday of Saint Eljah.

    At the initiative of the Center for independent journalism of Romania, Professor John Smock, associate professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism holds lectures on journalism online today and tomorrow.

    National Association of National Fund for Investments investors stages a protest march here in Bucharest.

    [05] ANNIVERSARIES AND COMMEMORATIONS

    Saint Eljah is observed today by the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Eastern Catholic Church and the Roman - Catholic Church.

    In 1927 King Ferdinand of Romania died: he reigned between 1914 - 1927. Ferdinand was born in 1865. After his death his nephew Mihai became King of Romania and as he was under age the Regency was initiated.

    Poet Adrian Paunescu was born in 1943.

    In 1969 astronaut Neil Armstrong walks on the Moon being the first human to have landed on the Moon. His words then were :" A small step for man, a huge leap for mankind ". Mr. Armstrong landed with the Eagle in an area near the Sea of Silence. The crew was Apollo 11. After this first landing of man on the Moon as part of a programme initiated by President JFK five others followed in the interval 20 July 1969 - 11 December 1972.
