  • [01] Of the international musical events of the day we mention:

    Last but one concert show of Barbra Streisand at Staples Center of Los Angeles. The last concert show will unfold at Madison Square Garden of New York.

    [02] International Conference on the theme of combatting drug trafficking

    Opening in Bucharest of the 18-th international conference for the combatting of organized crime and drug trafficking. The conference is unfolding under the high patronage of Home Minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu and it is organized together with the Institute for International Relations of the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Participating are political personalities and security experts coming from 18 countries. Special stress is laid on cooperation of police forces and international assistance for the combatting of the noxious phenomenon which is drug traffic and then peddling.

    [03] Romania sides with the stand of the 15 for elections in Serbia

    Answering an invitation of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union Romania is siding with the message which is sent to the Serbian people. According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry the message reads among other things the following: " The elections of 24 September are a corner-stone on the road of peacefully changing the Milosevici regime. A vote in favor of democracy will be followed by the lifting of the sanctions against Serbia and will bring about the support of the European Union for the political reforms and for the economic upsurge of your country."

    [04] The military exercises of Romania are not a threat for Yugoslavia

    Recently the Yugoslav minister for information said that there would be various scenarios for invading Yugoslavia by NATO forces in case the Democratic Serbian opposition does not win elections in that country; participants would also be the military that are now involved in military exercises in Romania.

    To all this the Press Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense of Romania has been authorized to declare the following, we quote: "... The military that are now participating in the military exercises on the territory of Romania have nothing in common with the attributes of an intervention force as imagined by the Yugoslav official in Belgrade. More than this the exercises are unfolding in different places and at different dates. As a matter of fact two of the exercises have already come to an end and the military that participated have already left Romania. The practical section of the application FORCE 2000 is unfolding this very week and it is aimed at the exclusive preparation of the military of the Romanian army " specifies among other things the communique of the Defense Ministry of Romania.

    [05] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has met with the President of Merril Lynch

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu met yesterday with the President of the Bank of investments Merril Lynch which prepares the privatization of the Romanian Commercial Bank. As part of the talk stress was also laid on the implication of the prestigious bank Merril Lynch represented at the meeting by President Dr. Jakov Frankel in the processes of financing, privatization and consultancy necessary on the Romanian market.

    [06] Price of gas goes up starting today

    Starting today, Wednesday, the price of gas goes up in Romania. Unleaded gas costs 12,400, supreme costs 12,600 lei per litre and Diesel is sold for 9,250 lei per litre. PETROM said the costs went higher in Romania as cost of crude on the world market had gone up.

    [07] Starting next year Romanians have new type passports

    The Home Minister of this country Constantin Dudu Ionescu said at the international conference for combatting drug trafficking that starting next year the Romanian citizens will have new type passports in order to avoid illegal frontier passage. The Home Ministry has a new type passport with no less than 30 security elements.

    [08] PDSR leader Ion Iliescu versus presidential counselor Dorin Marian

    According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Mr. Ion Iliescu said that what Dorin Marian had declared to the media in connection with a PDSR party member was "innacceptable." Dorin Marian had a meeting with the press during which he said that there was an understanding between SPP ( Security and Protection Service ) Captain Catalin Tanase and the head of the Committee for the investigation of abuses, corrupt practices and for petitions Mr. Ioan Honcescu that in short guaranteed the Captain release from prison if and when PDSR comes back to power if the Captain would incriminate the President of the country in the cigarette smuggling episode known as TIGARETA DOI. Ion Iliescu said that Tanase was questioned by a parliamentary committee and not by a PDSR party member.

    [09] BNS - Trade Union National Bloc - supports PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania in general elections

    With seventy votes for, eleven abstentions and seven votes against, BNS decided to support PDSR in the next general elections. According to BNS vicepresident Matei Bratianu several of BNS representatives are to be included in the decision structures of PDSR, on the lists of that party for parliamentary elections and in central and local administration.

    Meeting of the representatives of the Legal Matters Committee and the Committee for Public Administration and territoral Planning of the Romanian Senate with the representatives of OSCE .

    Senator Gheorghe Dumitrascu resigned from the party on whose lists he had been a senator for close to nine years now - PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - and he is hosting a press conference on the theme CURRENT POLITICAL PROBLEMS.

    MP Anghel Stanciu who is the chairman of the Committee for education, science, youth and sports of the Chamber of Deputies is delivering a conference on the theme MAGYARIZATION OF ROMANIANS IN MOLDOVA. THE EDUCATION BILL WAS ENFORCED IN THE COMMUNE CLEJA, COUNTY BACAU. The conference takes place at the Press Center of the Chamber of Deputies here in Bucharest.

    "Star" cigarette smuggler now in detention Gheorghe Trutulescu is questioned by the Committee for the Investigation of Abuses, Corrupt Practices and for Petitions.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu is chairing the debates of the sympozium on the theme ROMANIAN INVESTMENT - STABILITY AND CONTINUITY OF THE ECONOMY at the Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest.

    Meeting of the interdepartment group devoted to the problem of visas with the participation of the Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman at the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Romania.

    Thierry de Montbrial, Founding Director of the French Institute for Foreign Relations now in Romania will deliver a conference on the theme FUTURE OF EUROPEAN UNION at the French Institute of Bucharest.

    Opening of the Bucharest International Exhibition of textiles, ready made clothes, leather, furs and footwear MODEXPO at ROMEXPO of Bucharest.

    SCHOOL - DIDACTICA 2000 international expo-conference unfolds at Sala Palatului also here in Romania's capital city,

    Resort of Sinaia hosts the eighth meeting of the Balkan Federation of Clinic Laboratories.

    At Constanta, on the Black Sea Coast of Romania, the third national conference of stroke.

    Conclusion of the visit to Romania of top model Claudia Schiffer who has been a guest of Bucharest for two days.
