[01] Anti-war protesters march on US embassyAROUND 200 people, including Iraqi and Palestinian students, marched on the US embassy in Nicosia yesterday in another anti-war demonstration, condemning the United States and Britain for their “murderous war against Iraq”.The protest was one of a series of demonstrations organised by the recently formed 'Stop The War Alliance', an amalgam of political and student groups, which is also opposed to the Cyprus government facilitating the US-led strike on Iraq. The demonstration began at Eleftheria Square in the morning with children and professional artists painting anti-war pictures and actors reciting poems against the war. The demonstrators then marched to the US embassy shouting anti-coalition slogans such as “American dream go home,” “Bush, you w***** -- stop the war, ” and “the New World Order is murdering children”. Police used barbed wire barricades to seal the embassy off from the demonstrators. Some protesters threw eggs, firecrackers and plastic bags full of red paint towards the embassy. An effigy of US President George W. Bush dressed in black cloth and holding a butcher's knife was set alight and thrown into the street in front of the compound. “We are sick of war, we are sick of death and destruction, enough is enough, ” one demonstrator shouted. “I would like to thank the Cypriot people for supporting Iraqis and condemning the coalition's war in our country,” an Iraqi student said. Green Party deputy George Perdikis said the protest aimed to send the message that the war would not stop in Iraq. “The battle of Baghdad is not the end of this war,” he said. “The Ango-Americans continue to work towards world domination, but the whole world should stand against them and put a stop to their plans.” In a letter to UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan, the Cyprus Peace council condemned the coalition's “illegal war against Iraq”, saying they were disgusted by the slaughter of innocent civilians and the destruction of ancient monuments. Meanwhile motorcycle associations yesterday gathered at Eleftheria Square in a drive to collect blankets, money and food for Iraqi children. As part of their 'MotoAid' campaign, the bikers also gave motorcycle rides for a nominal fee of £1. Copyright Cyprus Mail 2003Sunday, April 13, 2003[02] Stray bullet hits residential areaBy a Staff ReporterRESIDENTS of Oroklini in Larnaca were outraged yesterday after a stray bullet from a nearby National Guard firing range landed in the yard of home. It was not the first time a stray round has hit the residential area, Larnaca Press news agency said. A similar incident was reported in Oroklini four months ago. In the latest incident, a 7.62mm bullet from a G-3 rifle hit Antonia Kyprianou's yard as she was cleaning the house. Police said the round came from an army firing range behind a hill overlooking the area. Residents yesterday demanded that the government take measures to prevent it happening again, Larnaca Press said. Damage from the fire is estimated at around £10,000. Forensic investigators have ruled out the possibility of foul play.
