1845:CYPPRESS:10[01] UNFICYP Commander calls on occupied troops not to shootNicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Finnish Brigadier General Ahti Toimi Paavali Vartianen, has called on the Commander of the Turkish occupation troops on the island, General Ali Yalcin, to instruct his soldiers not to shoot unless their own lives are threatened, an UNFICYP press release said today.UNFICYP expresses deep concern that once again an innocent life was lost ''as the result of the deplorable and unnecessary use of lethal force.'' An unarmed Greek Cypriot man, Petros Kakoullis, a 58-year-old refugee, was shot dead yesterday in cold blood by Turkish occupation troops when he strayed into the Turkish-occupied part of the island, while collecting snails. UNFICYP described the murder as a ''regrettable killing'' and noted it occurred in an area where its forces have ''no immediate responsibilities or independent means of observation'' and therefore, it has no information to the circumstances of the killing or participation in the actual investigation. However, it mentioned that it has been attending the autopsies and has arranged for the return of the body of the murderd civilian. ''Whatever the circumstances of yesterday's disproportionate response, UNFICYP insists on the principle that deadly force must not be used by either side against persons who cross the respective cease-fire lines or enter the UN buffer zone,'' the UN force press release said. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. ''Therefore, the Force Commander of UNFICYP has, in the strongest possible terms, requested the Commander of the Turkish Forces in Cyprus that he instruct the soldiers under his command not to shoot unless their own lives are threatened,'' the press release added. The UNFICYP announcement pointed out that ''it is imperative that everything be done by all concerned to insure that incidents such as yesterday's do not recur.'' Kakoullis was the fourth Greek Cypriot murdered by the Turks in the last four months. CNA AP/GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1925:CYPPRESS:11[02] Danish MPs visit CyprusNicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- A two-member Danish parliamentary delegation arrived in Cyprus this afternoon for a three-day official visit, at the invitation of the House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou.Parliamentarian and Chairman of the Danish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Henning Gjellerod, and Conservative member of the Folkentinget, Per Stig Moeller, have joined the Secretary of the Danish delegation to the PACE Jens Nuchel, who arrived yesterday. Tomorrow morning, the Danish MPs will be received by Kyprianou. The Danish delegation will also have separate meetings with the leaders or representatives of Cyprus' political parties and the Members of the Cyprus delegation to the PACE. On Thursday morning, they will be received by Foreign Minister Alecos Michaelides. CNA AP/GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:12[03] Aftershock activity develops smoothlyNicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- While the number of aftershocks, following last Wednesday's strong earthquake which hit Cyprus, has considerably fallen, two minor tremors were today recorded by the Mathiatis' Seismological Station.According to a press release issued by the Geological Survey Department the two tremors measured 4,0 and 3,0 on the Richter scale, respectively. They were recorded at 1425 and 1428 local time (1125 and 1128 GMT) and their epicentre was in the sea area, some 15 kilometres off the southern fishing-harbour of Zyghi. ''The aftershock activity appears to develop smoothly,'' the Department said. During the period from 0800 local time today (0500 GMT) and 1900 (1600 GMT), the Seismological Station recorded only 13 aftershocks, measuring between 3,0 to 4,5 on the Richter Scale. The strongest aftershock was registered at 1453 local time (1153 GMT). Last Wednesday Cyprus was hit by a strong earthquake measuring 6,1 on the Richter scale, causing minor injuries and damage. The epicentre was some 50 kilometres in the sea area, south-west of the western coastal town of Paphos. CNA MCH/GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2030:CYPPRESS:14[05] UN Chief deplores murder by TurksUnited Nations, Oct 14 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali deplored today the murder yesterday of a Greek Cypriot man by the Turkish occupation troops.UN Spokesperson Sylvana Foa told the press that ''the Secretary-General deplores the incident and the continued violence in Cyprus and the additional loss of life and wishes it would all stop.'' Asked by CNA whether that was the extent of Boutros-Ghali's statement on the incident, Foa said there would be a formal statement later in the day, following reports from the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in Nicosia. Turkish soldiers shot and killed 58-year-old Petros Kakoullis, who strayed into the occupied area while he was collecting snails in an area near the British base area of Dhekelia, in the southeastern part of the island. CNA GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2150:CYPPRESS:15[06] Turkish soldiers kill Greek Cypriot with three bulletsLarnaca, Oct 14 (CNA) -- A 58-year-old Greek Cypriot, Petros Kakoullis, who was shot and killed yesterday by the Turkish occupation troops, received three bullets, two on the chest and one on the neck.According to coroner Petros Vanezis, who carried out a three-hour post mortem examination on the body this evening, the first two bullets hit Kakoullis on the chest and on the neck. The lethal third bullet hit Kakoullis on the chest, he said. The coroner declined to give more details. The body was handed over to the Cypriot authorities earlier today through the UN. According to Kakoullis' son-in-law Panikos Hadjiathanasiou, 27, who was collecting snails with him, two Turkish soldiers shot his father-in-law twice while he was standing with his hands up. The Turkish soldiers walked towards him and from a close range they shot him again, finishing him off. The new murder of a Greek Cypriot man, the fourth in four months by the Turks, took place near the British Base Area of Dhekelia, in the south-eastern part of the island, adjacent to the Turkish-occupied territory.
