1340:CYPPRESS:01[01] Zenkov: Cyprus problem diverted away from UN Security CouncilNicosia, Oct 29 (CNA) -- The Cyprus problem is diverted away from the UN Security Council, Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Boris Zenkov told reporters today.Speaking after a 30-minute meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Zenkov said ''Russia does not oppose initiatives undertaken by different countries in efforts for a Cyprus settlement, provided they are co-ordinated.'' Stressing that the UN Security Council should be the only body to co-ordinate such initiatives, the Russian Ambassador categorically stated that he believed the initiatives under way today are not co-ordinated. He said Moscow does not claim a ''selfish role'' in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. The Russian diplomat noted that ''all efforts for a settlement should be within the framework of the UN and especially the UN Security Council'', adding that Russia ''considers this organisation responsible for the Cyprus problem.'' Zenkov, who is leaving Cyprus by the end of next month after a six-year service in the post of the Soviet and Russian Ambassador to the island, briefed President Clerides on the recent Duma resolution on Cyprus. They also discussed bilateral relations. CNA MCH/GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1430:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus to monitor Malta's accession movesNicosia, Oct 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus has adopted a ''wait and see'' policy following the change of government in Malta and pre-election pledges by the Labour party that the country's application for membership of the European Union might be withdrawn.''Cyprus' accession course for EU membership will continue irrespective of developments in Malta,'' President Glafcos Clerides told the press today. The President pointed out that ''one must not rush into any conclusions, despite Labour's pre-election position which raised serious doubts about Malta's accession course.'' Cyprus and Malta, who applied for EU membership in 1990, are due to start accession negotiations six months after the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC). In his comments on this issue, Government Spokesman Yiannakis Cassoulides said the government would be monitoring developments in Malta's accession course. ''We are interested in Malta as a Mediterranean country and a candidate for EU accession,'' Cassoulides told the press today, but noted that pre-election promises are not necessarily implemented once the elections are over. ''Our application for accession to the EU has no relation with any other application by a prospective candidate country,'' he added. The EU decision to start membership talks with both countries, though taken on the same day (March 6, 1995), concerns two different cases, the Government Spokesman added. CNA MM/GP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1435:CYPPRESS:03[03] USS Mitscher visits Larnaca portNicosia, Oct 29 (CNA) -- A US Navy guided missile destroyer arrived today in Larnaca for a seven-day port visit as part of a programme of routine port calls in the Mediterranean.USS Mitcher, which is making its maiden deployment after being commissioned into the US Atlantic Fleet on December 10, 1994, is the seventh ship of the Arleigh Burke class of ''Aegis'' guided missile destroyers. It has a crew of 340 and is commanded by US Navy Commander Raymond A. Spicer. Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides visited USS Mitcher today. The ship has not however entered the port of Larnaca and as a result no press tour will be available, the US Embassy announced. CNA MM/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1710:CYPPRESS:05[05] Turks fire shots at British soldiers - no injuriesNicosia, Oct 29 (CNA) -- Shots, fired from the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic, hit a vehicle, carrying two unarmed British soldiers on routine work near Dhekelia base, on the south east of the island, Sean Tully, a spokesman for the bases told CNA.The vehicle was a couple of metres into the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, the spokesman explained. Nobody was injured but the British High Commission in Nicosia has already made representations to the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime about the incident, he added. The men and their civilian vehicle, a rented pick-up truck, were ''just a couple of metres into the occupied areas,'' a spokesman for the High Commission told CNA. ''One of the bullets fired hit the vehicle, but it is not known how many shots were fired,'' the bases spokesman said. Today's incident occurred only two-weeks after Turkish troops shot and killed in cold blood an unarmed Greek Cypriot, Petros Kakoullis, who mistakenly strayed into the occupied areas while collecting snails. The shooting today took place about one metre from the spot where Kakoullis was murdered. The shots were fired at around 0940 local time (0740 GMT) when the soldiers were checking out concrete pillars marking the British Sovereign Base Area (SBA) northern boundary. After their vehicle was hit, the soldiers drove off, the spokesman explained. The two soldiers, who belong to the 42nd Survey Engineers Group, were visiting Cyprus on routine work. The SBA police, Tully said, will conduct an internal inquiry into the circumstances of the incident. CNA MM/AP/1996ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2030:CYPPRESS:11[06] World acclaimed artists display work on Van GoghNicosia, Oct 29 (CNA) -- Works of internationally renown artists, including David Hockney and Karel Appel, inspired by the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh, are in Cyprus on display.The announcement about the exhibition, to open tomorrow, was made here today by Yolande Clergue, the chairperson of the Van Gogh Foundation in Arles, in Province, France. She told a press conference that all artists have donated their works to the Foundation. This exhibition was also staged in Spain and is expected to move to the US next year. One Cypriot artist's painting on canvas, which was selected following a competition, is to be included in the Foundation's collection. The name of the artist will be announced at tomorrow's opening. Other artists, including famous sculptors, photographers, poets and fashion designer Christian Lacroix, will also display their work. Francis Bacon, Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein, Arturo Segunda and Fernando Botero will also exhibit their works. France's ambassador to Cyprus, Henry Jacolin, noted the cultural links between Cyprus and Europe and said the exhibition would help local culture merge with European culture. The exhibition, to take place at the Municipal Arts Centre here, ends on December 8.
