[01] UN urged to stop plunder in occupied areas

Geneva, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Kyrenia Bishop, Pavlos, has called on the UN Commission for Human Rights to safeguard human rights in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus and protect the island's religious and cultural heritage.

Addressing the 53rd meeting of the UN Commission here, Metropolitan Pavlos denounced the continuing destruction of Cyprus' civilisation in the occupied areas of the Republic.

Turkey is willingly deaf to calls for a halt of its destructive methods, and ignores the basic rules about man and his civilisation, the Metropolitan said.

He outlined numerous examples of Greek Orthodox churches in occupied Cyprus, pillaged under the watchful eye of Ankara, including the Cathedral of Archangel Michael and the Monasteries of Antiphonitis, Armenomonastiro and Apostolos Andreas.

Pavlos told CNA that two delegations, attending the meeting, requested material about the pillage of Cyprus' cultural and religious heritage by the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime to bring the matter into the limelight in their respective countries.

"Turkish representatives asked for a copy of my speech," he said.
