[01] Skoda Tour of Cyprus Rally results

Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- Cypriot Christakis Thoma at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, cruised an easy victory in the Skoda Tour of Cyprus Rally and into fourth place in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship yesterday.

His earlier battle with compatriot and pre-event favourite Andreas Tsouloftas fizzled out in the afternoon when Tsouloftas' Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III went out with a broken gearbox after the thirteenth special stage of the rally.

Thoma, who had been in the lead since the beginning of the two-day rally on Saturday, won by a clear seven minutes thirty four seconds from Parmenion, a Cypriot driving a Proton Wira RS, while S. Galatariotis driving a Lancia HF Integrale was in third position.

Eighteen of the fifty crews who had started out from Nicosia on Saturday completed the course, covering 763 kms, including 16 special stages totalling 259 kms over rugged mountainous roads, which ended in the moat beneath Nicosia's historic Venetian walls.

Andreas Tsouloftas remains in fifth place in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, of which the "Skoda Tour of Cyprus" Rally was part of this year for the first time.

[02] CNA Chairman addresses AMAN General Assembly

Limassol, Jun 15 (CNA) -- The Chairman of the Cyprus News Agency board, Anthos Lykavgis, said today CNA plans to ask the assistance of the members of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), to restore free movement of journalists all over Cyprus.

In his address to the 7th General Assembly of AMAN, which is taking place in Limassol, Lykavgis pointed out that Cypriot citizens "cannot move freely" in their own homeland, stressing that these problems are part of the "Mediterranean reality".

He added that the problem of free movement in Cyprus is a problem for AMAN, because "it violates principles relating to the object and the members of the Alliance".

Lykavgis also pointed out that CNA is taking over the presidency of the Alliance this year and assured that it is "fully aware of the weight it is undertaking".

He also made reference to the geographical position of Cyprus, saying that it is at the crossroad of three continents, from where the civilisations which evolved "will lead us into today's phase of a new civilisation, in which information, in its broad sense, constitutes the dynamic and lays the foundations for its prospects".

Referring to the absence of the Turkish delegation, Lykavgis said that although it did not vote against the meeting taking place in Cyprus, it refused to participate, questioning the legality of the Republic of Cyprus.
