    [01] Cypriots - Britain - invasion

London, Jul 20 (CNA) -- As people in Cyprus mark 24 years of Turkish occupation of part of their country and continuing violation of their human rights by Turkey, their compatriots abroad are rallying around them to press on with efforts for a peaceful negotiated settlement in Cyprus.

Overseas Cypriots living in Britain have appealed to their Premier, Tony Blair, to redouble his efforts in the search for a settlement in Cyprus.

They also pointed out that President Glafcos Clerides' proposal for the demilitarisation of the island provides the right framework for a just and lasting solution in Cyprus, if the Turkish Cypriot side displays the political will.

In a letter, delivered to Blair's office by a delegation of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, they ask Blair to "redouble your efforts in the search for a settlement, which would not only bring justice, where suffering has been so deep, but would also open the way for better and stronger relations with Turkey."

Expressing appreciation for the "clear support" the British government affords the Cyprus peace effort, the letter notes "the government of Cyprus open offer to include Turkish Cypriots on the EU accession talks, coupled with the repeated proposals for the demilitarisation and no-fly zone, give us all the means to achieve a just and lasting solution in Cyprus, if political will from the Turkish Cypriot leader were forthcoming."

The letter was delivered as part of yesterday's protest march to Trafalgar Square to demand freedom and justice for Cyprus.

Some 20,000 people, including eleven deputies, marched through central London, carrying banners denouncing the Turkish invasion.

The key note speaker at the rally was Cyprus Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides, who called on overseas Cypriots to continue their efforts to persuade their respective governments that justice must be done in Cyprus too.

"Our struggle is difficult but we shall not cease to demand our rights, we shall not stop knocking on every door and raise the Cyprus question at every international forum," Michaelides said.

He said the people of Cyprus will not relinquish their rights nor will they surrender, stressing that Turkey's audacity and arrogance have to be dampened.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

[03] Turkish Premier illegally in Cyprus

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) -- Turkey's officials, acting in concert and led by the country's Premier Mesut Yilmaz, continue to provoke feelings and emotions in Cyprus, exactly 24 years to the day Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island's northern third.

In a continuing barrage of comments and statements from Turkey, Yilmaz, who arrived in the occupied areas of the Republic earlier today, reiterated threats against Cyprus if it boosts its defences with anti-aircraft missiles at a time when Turkish occupation forces not only upgrade their weaponry but increase their strength.

Yilmaz, on the island in contravention of international law and order, claimed his country has brought peace and stability in the region with what he called a "peaceful operation" and history describes as a barbaric invasion, accompanied by killing and suffering.

He said he came to Cyprus to "celebrate a day of peace and freedom", when Turkish troops launched their offensive against Cyprus.

The Turkish Premier did not fail to reiterate his criticism against the European Union for its decision to start membership talks with the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

He also warned Cyprus and Greece "to avoid adventures" and said his government would "act accordingly", in a thinly-veiled threat against the deployment of the Russian anti-aircraft S300 missile system on the island.

However, there was no mention of Turkey's rejection of a proposal for the demilitarisation of Cyprus, an idea put forward by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides to meet the security demands of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

The Turkish Premier arrived with promises of financial aid to the self- styled Turkish Cypriot regime and claimed that there are "two democratic states" on the island, a view the UN Security Council dismissed only last month with its resolutions.

Yilmaz is expected to return to Turkey later today. Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, thanked Yilmaz for Turkey's unwavering support and said his visit would contribute to further progress of the Turkish Cypriots.

They then ran out of gas and Rainer Bonhof's side scored six in the last 25 minutes.

Brian Kerr's Republic of Ireland team also hit five against the other debutants, Croatia, in Agia Napa. They were 2-0 up in nine minutes, only for the Croatians to draw level.

The Irish regained the lead on the stroke of half-time and rounded off a 5-2 win with second-half goals from Richard Partridge and Liam -his second of the match.

The Irish goalkeeper Alex O'Reilly saved a penalty from Croatia's Mihael Mikic when the score was 2-4.

Two goals by the Leeds United striker Lee Matthews gave England a 2-1 win over a spirited Cyprus side.

After the first in the 10th minute, an own goal by Jonathan Woodgate allowed the hosts to draw level. Matthews' second goal after 37 minutes proved to be the winner.

Portugal and Spain, second and third in last year's Championship, produced an exciting game in Larnaca, with a technically gifted Spain side creating the clearer chances.
