[01] All part rally - Denounce NATO strikes

Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Cypriot political parties are organising today a rally to condemn the continuing NATO air strikes against Yugoslavia and to express support to the Yugoslav people.

The demonstration will take place at Eleftheria Square in Nicosia and will be addressed by the President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, on behalf of all the political parties.

Meanwhile a Telemarathon was organised yesterday by LOGOS television station in aid of the Yugoslav people.

Some 70.000 Cyprus pounds (around 140.000 US dollars) have been money collected so far while more donations are coming in.

The final amount will be announced on Monday, April 5. Medicine, clothing and foodstuffs were also collected.

[02] All party rally - Solidarity to Yugoslav people

Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou called today for the restoration of the credibility of the UN and Europe and wondered who gave the US the right to act as global police.

Addressing a rally organised by all Cypriot political parties in solidarity to the Yugoslav people, held at Eleftheria square, Kyprianou stressed that the people and politicians of Cyprus "will stand by all those whose human rights are being violated".

He also said that the people of Cyprus are very sensitive to violations of international law, the UN Charter and the role of the UN Security Council and pointed out that NATO has been transformed from a defensive alliance to an offensive one.

"We are not anti-American, or anti-British, anti-French or anti- German. We are for the rights of our people and those of all the peoples in the world," he stressed.

"The worst of all is that in the name of human rights, human rights are being violated," he added.

Wondering "who gave the US the right to act as global police," Kyprianou pointed out that Cyprus had put its hopes on the US for implementation of law and order in accordance to UN Security Council resolutions and international law.

He also wondered why NATO did not show the same kind of sensitivity to 25 years of Turkish occupation of Cyprus and to violations suffered by the Kurdish people.

Kyprianou described the new order as "strange" and stressed that "if the credibility of the UN and Europe is not restored then Europe will not be able to survive on economic cooperation alone but should base its existence on justice and morality".

Demanding an end to the bombings and hostilities and a political solution to the crisis according to the UN Charter and international law, Kyprianou noted that the people of Cyprus are especially sensitive to human rights' violations.

Making reference to the Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus, Kyprianou also stressed that "we will not accept the legitimisation of geographical or ethnic division of Cyprus but we will continue the struggle for restoration of our rights".

[03] All-party rally - Solidarity to Yugoslav people

Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Thousands of people, Cypriots, Yugoslavs and Kurds, attended today an all-party rally of solidarity to the people of Yugoslavia, held at the central Eleftheria square in Nicosia, and demanded an end to NATO bombings.

The demonstrators chanted slogans like "European Union and NATO- Murderers' syndicate", "Down with the new order of death" and "No facilitation of the imperialists".

Speaking to CNA, Serb demonstrators called for an end to the bombings, pointing out that they aim both against Serbs and Albanians.

"We are all Yugoslavs," a Serbian woman said, while 13-year old Tara added that "bombing will never make peace in any country".

Another Serb demonstrator pointed out that "Albanians are not the problem, the problem is that the Americans want to conquer Europe".

The rally ended with a concert and demonstrators headed to the US Embassy in Nicosia.

    [04] US Embassy - Demonstration

Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Hundreds of Cypriots and Serbs gathered today outside the American Embassy in Nicosia protesting NATO strikes against Yugoslavia.

The demonstrators, chanting slogans such as "the Balkans are here" and "Greece and Serbia-Alliance", threw eggs and tomatos at the Embassy building and burnt American flags and a picture of US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright.

The US Embassy was surrounded by barbed wire and strong police force. A young Serbian woman holding a Serbian flag expressed gratitude for the moral and financial support shown to her country by Cyprus and Greece.

A Cypriot woman told CNA "the next step Americans are going to take is to give independence to the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus," pointing out that the US has never shown any sensitivity over violations against the Cypriots, the Palestinians or the Kurds.
